Global climate warnings associated with economic progress and other factors have led the power systems to undergo changes, mainly affecting the way they are designed, planned, operated and managed. A significant amount of activity is underway on the technological, policy and economic fronts, which necessarily affects the entire electric power sector. Investments in research and development (R&D) have been the solution to mitigate the technological and policy risks of these changes and have attracted market capital to the power system industry. One of the first areas affected by these changes is the power systems analysis area, which requires the ability of a set of simulation tools to represent the changes associated with the technological front, such as wind and solar power energy penetrations, and/or analysis of policy impacts (e.g. maintenance schedule of large equipment in the open market energy). This thesis has explored new ways for power system analyses through the use of agentbased technology. First, the research work discusses the development of a Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) technology-based platform with potential applications in management and simulation processes in power systems. In order to explore some of the features of MAS, a new methodology is proposed to assess power systems reliability based on the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS), exploiting the benefits of the distributed artificial intelligence area and, mainly, the use of the distributed capacity in two ways: building autonomous behaviors for the applications and mitigating computational effort. Through the use of this technology, it was possible to divide the MCS algorithm into distinct tasks and submit them to the agent processing. Two different approaches to solve reliability problems in generating capacity based on chronological MCS illustrate the potential of MAS in power systems reliability assessment. Second, the maintenance schedule generating units are discussed. Maintenance decisions in electricity markets are one of the most important strategic conflicts among power players. For instance, a generation company is a selfinterested entity that is responsible for its own risk-based level. On the other hand, for large equipment supplying many customers, it is the Transmission System Operator"s task to schedule the most suitable period for maintenance, thus preserving system reliability. This relationship is sometimes conflicting and can be seen as an obstacle to the generation companies maximizes profits, as well as to the transmission system operator, since it is Index INDEX Contents CHAPTER 1 ..

In order to study the hourly effects on the reliability of power systems, this paper first proposes a discussion of the risk methodologies and then a novel way of examining the probability distributions of the reliability indices based on a hybrid approach. The effects of the substantial use of renewable energy combined with the integration of electric vehicles will be discussed in relation to the IEEE test systems and a planning configuration of the Portuguese Generation System.

In this approach, a Sequential Monte Carlo Simulation based procedure is applied to emulate the distribution system operation, as well as to calculate system and load point performance indices. Steady-state aspects are evaluated using AC power flow computations. Furthermore, frequency stability is assessed using dynamic simulation aiming at verifying the feasibility of islanded operation. Simulation results are presented for modified versions of the RBTS-Bus2-F1 test system. The results highlight the importance of including steady-state and dynamic analysis into the system performance evaluation, mainly in what regards the impact assessment of distributed generation on the distribution system operation.

From the wind power integration perspective, this energy source imposes additional requirements, mainly due to the inherent unpredictable characteristic of the wind. Besides the uncertainties in load and generating unit availabilities, the operating reserve needs also to deal with the fluctuation characteristic of the wind power. Therefore, more flexibility of the conventional generators (hydro and thermal) is required to provide system support services. This paper discusses a new methodology based on chronological Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate the operating reserve requirements of generating systems with large amounts of renewable energy sources, in particular, wind power.

However, their use in real systems is not usual, mainly where the uncertainty level can be significant. This is due to the low accuracy of the results related to the classical methods, and the computational burden needed to achieve a high level of accuracy in the symmetric approaches. This paper aims to present a linearization of the Symmetric Fuzzy Power Flow in order to reduce the computational effort and make it possible for it to achieve high levels of accuracy when applied to real systems. With the purposes of demonstrating the applicability of the proposed approach, several IEEE test systems and a planning configuration of the Portuguese Transmission System will be studied.

To mitigate their economic impact, combining the wind power with pumped hydro energy storage may be used. In order to deliver a joint operational strategy for a wind power plant combined with storage, one requires reliable wind power forecasts. The forecasts commonly only consist of a single-value forecast (point forecast) for each look-ahead time. However, additional representative information concerning the forecast uncertainty may be required. In this paper, the influence of uncertainty representation daily operation for a wind power plant combined with pumped hydro storage is discussed. The paper illustrates how uncertainty representations such as Gaussian uncorrelated errors may also not be satisfactory. Based on a case study with a wind power plant combined with pumped hydro storage, organized for illustrative purposes, the paper demonstrates the need to have uncertainty representation including cross-period dependencies, in order to define a correct operation policy.

The scenarios used are exploring electric vehicles penetrations in six different European countries, in order to assess their impact on the security of supply. An analytical method is developed to perform this evaluation. Afterwards, a discussion about the accuracy of this methodology is done and the differences between this approach and a flexible Sequential Monte Carlo Simulation are identified.

For this purposes, the sequential Monte Carlo simulation is used not only to assess conventional reliability indices as loss of load probability, loss of load expectation, loss of load frequency, and loss of load duration, but also to discuss an alternative measure of risk-based level called Well-being Analysis.

Since DG presents potential to defer investments in network, it is evaluated the DG impact on grid capacity. A multi-objective optimization tool, using the meta-heuristic MEPSO, is used supporting an alternative approach to exploit the Pareto front features. Tests in distinct conditions were performed with two well-known distribution networks: IEEE-34 and IEEE-123. The results combined minimization and maximization in order to produce different Pareto fronts and determine the extent of impact caused by DG. The analysis gives important information, especially identifying futures to be considered in planning, where future means a set of realizations of all uncertainties. MEPSO also presented satisfactory performance in obtaining the Pareto fronts.
