Even though the so-called cultural turn in geogra-phy coincided with the elaboration and “mainstreaming ” of feminist geographies, these two intellectual trajectories are not easily aligned, and the relationships between them have at times been characterized by tension, particularly within the context of American geography. In this paper, I outline the history of these various tensions and uneasy alliances, sug-gest possible causes for these tensions, and discuss in what ways (or not) this uneasy alliance might matter in terms of the intellectual trajectories of both subfields. It considers and explores the different ways that women and men work, travel, eat, nurture, and live. To uncover this evolution of gender patterns this book explores many historical periods, and travels across cultural boundaries. Accounts of men and women's roles and careers explain many issues of gender in the workplace and working women's history. Putting Women in Place offers an appealing set of discussions and experiences which combines social knowledge with historical facts. Recent attempts to contextualize the history of geography have ignored the gendered construction ... more Recent attempts to contextualize the history of geography have ignored the gendered construction of much of that history, while arguments for a post-modem human geography have ignored feminist theory. By examining the stories of Victorian women explorers, this essay suggests how women have contributed to the formation of geographic knowledge, and, by implication, asks what can be leamed by considering the contribution of women's ways of knowing to our reconstruction of human geography.

This essay provides analyses of labor strikes at two early sites (first quarter of the 20th centu... more This essay provides analyses of labor strikes at two early sites (first quarter of the 20th century) of the global production line-Singer Manufacturing Company's factories at Clydebank, Scotland and Podolsk, Russia-and the labor management strategies that led to and resulted from these particular enactments of power. I focus on the degree to which Singer and its employees were embedded in local, regional and national contexts, and how and why workers' agency mattered to the course of early globalization. I also suggest that such analyses provide significant understanding of how and why early global production was both different from and similar to contemporary globalization. By so doing, this analysis contributes to theoretical discussions concerning degrees of territorial embeddedness of transnational corporations, particularly in regard to changes over time as well as geographic scale, and adds historical nuance to theoretical questions concerning labor geographies under conditions of globalization. These spatial references are not entirely figurative, but allude to our positioning within particular contexts, which both frame and are constructed by our texts. Thus, Probyn's dialogue inevitably raises geographical questions. Moreover, geography is not merely a passive, unnamed party through which Probyn's dialogue is conducted; it is not immune from or in any way ‘outside’ the situatedness its terminology is employed to articulate. S oon after the Woman’s Building opened at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in May 1893, it wa... more S oon after the Woman’s Building opened at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in May 1893, it was deemed a success, proving to be one of the Fair’s most popular attractions (Figures 1 and 2) and putting to rest the doubts of a commissioner of the Fair that it would be a ’white elephant’. The commissioner had assumed that few people would be interested in touring displays of what was considered women’s mediocre work.’ In fact, quite the opposite happened : thousands came daily to see the model kitchen, to watch demonstrations of cooking techniques, to view the displays of women’s handicraft and industrial labours, and to eat at the tea room. However, despite its popular appeal, contemporary critics found little to admire in the aesthetics of the Building. The American Architect and Building News remarked that it was ’neither worse nor better than might have been expected’:

This paper examines the links between these eras through an analysis of the ideologies that underpinned two types of exhibits at the Exposition - depictions of Native-Americans, and commercial displays of American products sold overseas. I argue that the turn-of-the-century discourse of civilization that helped legitimize American economic imperialism was formulated from within, and built upon, the discursive construction of Anglo-American/Native-American relationships.
