tumor suppressor gene p53 and prostate cancer (PCa) has been previously
investigated, however, the etiological role of HPV infection and p53 codon 72
polymorphism in the PCa pathogenesis remains highly controversial.
Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the possible role of human
papillomavirus in the development of prostate cancer and the distrubution of the p53
codon 72 polymorphism in Turkish population.
Methods: We investigated the presence of HPV in 60 formalin fixed and paraffin
embedded prostate cancer tissues, as well as in 36 benign prostatic hyperplasia
tissue (BPH) samples by using real-time PCR and pyrosequencing. Furthermore, the
same group of patients were also screened for the presence of the Arg72Pro
polymorphism of the p53 gene, a p53 polymorphism related to HPV.
Conclusions: No HPV DNA was detected while using real-time PCR in any of the 36
BPH samples. One of the sixty (1.67%) PCa samples was found to be positive for
HPV DNA by using a real-time PCR. After using pyrosequencing analysis, the only
HPV type detected in the PCa sample was HPV-57. Compared to the control group,
Arg /Pro genotype was observed more frequently in prostate cancer patients
(p=0.044), and also Pro allele frequency is higher in prostate cancer patients
(p=0.021). Our findings do not support the involvement of HPV in the etiology of
prostate carcinogenesis, and the proline allele could be a risk factor for the

We aimed to assess the damage diminishing effects of recombinant adiponectin (rAD) through NF-kB in the experimental acute pancreatitis (AP) model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Acute pancreatitis was created by applying 50 μg/kg dose of intraperitoneal cerulean. The rats were randomised and divided into 3 groups as control, AP and rAD groups. Moreover, the rats in each group were divided into two subgroups as 24th and 48th hour subgroups. rAD was injected in the study group intraperitoneally. Tissue and blood samples were taken after 24 and 48 hours. Histopathological assessment and NF-kB activity were investigated in pancreatic tissue. RESULTS: Serum TNF-a, IL-1b and IL-6 levels were found to be statistically signifi cant in the AP group compared to the rAD group in the 24th and 48th hour (p < 0.05). Similarly, NF-kB activity was also found to be signifi cant in the AP group both in the 24th and 48th hour (p < 0.05). There were signifi cant differences in the AP and the rAD groups histopathologically in terms of edema, infl ammation, vacuolisation and necrosis (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: rAD has signifi cantly reduced NF-kB activity, cytokine levels and tissue damage (Tab. 1, Fig. 1, Ref. 51).

Four hundred and eight cases which were referred to our breast imaging unit between 2004 and 2008 for biopsy evaluation were enrolled into the study. Two hundred and thirteen probably benign solid masses are classified as BI-RADS 3 in 205 of the enrollees. All masses were sonographically detectable and were classified through the guidelines of BI-RADS lexicon for sonography before the final pathological examination. All pathologic results were evaluated and the negative predictive value, false negativity rate and 95% confidence interval were calculated. Of the 213 masses, fine needle aspiration cytology was performed in 120. US-guided wire localization and eventual surgery were carried out in the remaining 93 masses. Finally, 211 of the punctured lesions turned out to be benign a...

In this study the effects of intraperitoneally administered paclitaxel on rat colonic anastomosis was investigated. After colonic anastomosis, 3 mL of isotonic saline was administered intraperitoneally to rats in control group (Group 1, n = 20). The study group (Group 2, n = 20), paclitaxel 3 mg/kg diluted with isotonic saline was administered intraperitoneally after colonic anastomosis. Rats were sacrificed on 14th day and mean body weight, mean anastomosis bursting pressure and the histopathology of the anastomosis site of the two groups were compared. Mean body weight was approximately the same with the preoperative values at 14th day in both groups. Anastomosis bursting pressure in paclitaxel group (127 +/- 3 mm Hg) was found to be similar to control group (133 +/- 5 mm Hg) (P > 0.05). Mucosal layer formation in the anastomosis line was complete on the...

Three of those-ligneous conjunctivitis, ligneous periodontitis and colloid milium-have been rarely reported in a same patient. We report a case of mucosal and skin deposits of an amyloid-like homogeneous material associated with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and congenital auricular hypoplasia. We discussed and reviewed the literature on these unique associations to determine whether these are the same pathological process. We also noted whether this case represents a new syndrome or a coincidental association.

This reaction occurred at the injection site of a chemotherapy regimen that combined actinomycin and vincristine a few hours after the first course. After a single injection of actinomycin in the right arm, a similar reaction occurred, implicating it as the responsible agent. A skin biopsy specimen demonstrated a cell-poor interface tissue reaction associated with an eccrine neutrophilic hidradenitis. To our knowledge, this is the first case of persistent supravenous serpentine hyperpigmented eruption reported in a child treated with this particular drug combination.

A 59-year-old man with severe lower back and right leg pain that did not resolve with conservative treatment was seen in an outpatient clinic. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine identified an L3 vertebral corpus lesion with epidural extension. The diagnosis was unclear, so the patient underwent surgery. The pathologic diagnosis was capillary haemangioma, so angiography-guided embolization was performed postoperatively. Vertebral haemangioma must be considered when there is evidence of a vertebral corpus lesion with epidural extension on magnetic resonance imaging.

The effects of different polymers and drug ratios were investigated. The most appropriate carriers were selected by in vitro testing. A rat methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus osteomyelitis model was used to evaluate the effects of the loaded microspheres. The drug was released rapidly from the pectin carrier but this was more sustained in the chitosan formulation. Chitosan microspheres loaded with ciprofloxacin hydrochloride were more effective for the treatment of osteomyelitis than equivalent intramuscular antibiotics.

Omental pregnancy, an extremely rare form of abdominal pregnancy, can be primary or secondary to a tubal pregnancy that aborts out of the fimbria and reimplants in the peritoneal cavity. We present an additional case of primary omental pregnancy at 12 gestational weeks presenting with symptoms of hemoperitoneum and acute abdomen.

In order to evaluate the wound healing activity of the plant, aqueous extracts were prepared from the flowering parts and fruits of Colutea cilicica Boiss. & Bal. by using 40 • C distilled water. Incision wound healing models by using tensiometer on rats and excision wound healing models on mice were employed to assess the activity. Significant wound healing activity was observed when ointment formulation of the aqueous extract at 1% concentration was applied on the mentioned models. The fruit extract treated the groups of animals, showing a 78.1% contraction in wounds, which was close to the contraction value of the reference drug Madecassol (100%). On the other hand, the same extract used on the incision wound model demonstrated a significant increase (42%) in wound tensile strength, compared to the flowering aerial parts. Histopathological examination also supported the results shown in both the incision and excision wound models. The wound healing effect was evaluated and compared with the reference ointment Madecassol. Moreover, zinc and vitamin C levels in the fruit (9480 ± 0 mcg g −1 ; 389 mg g −1) and flowering aerial part (6609 ± 1 mcg g −1 ; 404 mg g −1) extracts, which might have contributed to the wound healing process, were determined. The experimental data confirmed the traditional usage of C. cilicica Boiss. & Bal.
