The procedure starts from the overview of the theme in every component, both functional and cultural, to achieve the development of the research and the elaboration of the layout, meant as an answer, mostly conceptual, to the questions risen by the theme. The master plan of the space is following, to reach the writing of the project and the necessary check of its suitability to the starting theme.

The text identifies neo-nomadism as an issue characterizing this beginning of the century and as ... more The text identifies neo-nomadism as an issue characterizing this beginning of the century and as a challenging field for the project culture. It calls for questioning the meaning of living in the contemporary world, in post-industrial cities, in relation to available spaces no longer used, which are named leftovers. Their regeneration project is described, which can assume their degradation elements as an opportunity to experiment a new “aesthetic of leftovers”. In conclusions, in this scenario, the need to rethink the disciplinary status of the project is recalled, to be opened to a new form of transdisciplinarity, defined as “design of the unfinished”, positioned between architecture, design, scenography, restoration, exhibition design.

In the disciplines of interior design, interior architecture, architecture, spatial design and urban design, one encounters the coupling of the conditions of ‘urban’ and ‘interior’ with increasing frequency. Urban interior, interior urbanization, urban interiority and urban interior design are used as provocations for designing, teaching and writing – researching and thinking – in cities and cultures as diverse as Milan, Madrid, Melbourne, Jakarta, Austin, London, Stockholm, Bangkok, Singapore and Bogotá.

Too little attractive to be taken into account by real estate operators, unlike the big industrial zones. Too recent, and still recognizable, to assume the noble and romantic rank of "ruin". Not so special to deserve restoration and the Superintendence interest. Even not so damaged to be considered waste. However, they can represent a strategic resource for the territory, not just being available to perform new functions, but also holding memories and human stories that would otherwise be lost.

This essay by Luciano Crespi wants to demonstrate how the design of interior spaces is an activity that has autonomous cultural foundations and that arises out of the idea that an objective unity between urban logic, architectural quality and interior design can still exist. This "school of thought" that has been progressively formed in the last decade within the course of studies in Interior Design, of the Politecnico di Milano, has developed this concept, investigating its originality and enormous potential.
