Die Arbeiten in Spina begannen im Herbst 2007 auf Einladung des Soprintendenten per i Beni Archeo... more Die Arbeiten in Spina begannen im Herbst 2007 auf Einladung des Soprintendenten per i Beni Archeologici dell'Emilia Romagna, Dr. Luigi Malnati, dem an dieser Stelle für seine aussergewöhnliche Kooperationsbereitschaft ganz herzlich gedankt sei. Vor Ort konnten wir uns auf die unermüdliche Unterstützung durch die für Spina zuständige Inspektorin, Dr. Caterina Cornelio Cassai, Museum Ferrara, verlassen, die auch die Untersuchung der Grabungsfl äche und des Aushubs mit Metalldetektoren durch Mitarbeiter der Soprintendenza vermittelte. Bei der Beschaffung eines vorläufigen Magazinraumes im Palazzo Patrignani in Comacchio war uns Laura Ruffoni, Comacchio, behilfl ich. Die notwendige fi nanzielle Unterstützung für das Projekt gewährten die Fritz Thyssen Stiftung in Köln, wofür Paul Zanker besonders gedankt sei, und seit 2008 die Universität Zürich. Der geophysikalische Survey konnte im Frühjahr 2008 in Kooperation mit Dr. Vedia Izzet, der British School at Rome und der Universität Southampton von Archaeological Prospection Services of Southampton durchgeführt werden, wofür Sophie Hay herzlich gedankt sei. Die Finanzierung des Surveys erfolgte durch die British Academy und die Universität Zürich. Dr. Fede Berti, Ferrara, stand uns als ausgewiesene Kennerin Spinas mit Rat zur Seite.

A fragment of marble sculpture recently discovered in the VII-V cent. BC PT-1A archaeological Uni... more A fragment of marble sculpture recently discovered in the VII-V cent. BC PT-1A archaeological Unit at Chiusi (Tuscany) has been analyzed in detail from a morphological, minero-petrographical and compositional (C-O isotope composition) standpoint. Archaeometric results indicate a Naxian provenance, probably from the Apollonas quarry. Historical documents indicate that quarry exploitation ceased at the beginning of V century BC, thus providing a lower chronological limit to the artifact's age. This, coupled with a stylistic analysis of the fragment, allow us to surmise that the original sculpture was a Greek kore. The occurrence of this sculpture at Chiusi may have relevant implications in the comprehension of trade and political relationships between inner Etruria and the Aegean world in the Archaic period.
