Experimental Study of Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop Characteristics of Air/Water and Air-Steam/Water Heat Exchange in a Polymer Compact Heat Exchanger

In order to increase the thermal efficiency, the gas turbines are designed to operate at higher t... more In order to increase the thermal efficiency, the gas turbines are designed to operate at higher temperature, which requires highly efficient cooling structures for turbine blades. The dimples and ribs are effective surface structures to enhance the convective heat transfer in the gas turbine blade internal cooling. In the present study, a novel hybrid cooling structure with miniature V-shaped ribs and dimples is presented, and the heat transfer and pressure loss characteristics are obtained experimentally. The heat transfer performance of the rib-dimple structures, which include three different rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratios of 0.017, 0.029 and 0.044 and one dimple configuration with the dimple depth-to-diameter ratio of 0.2, are studied by using the transient liquid crystal thermography technique for turbulent flow in rectangular channels within the Reynolds number range from 10,000 to 60,000. It is found that the miniature V-shaped ribs arranged upstream the dimples can significantly improve the heat transfer performance of the dimples, resulting in a more uniform heat transfer distribution on the surface. The V rib-dimple hybrid structure in the channel shows much higher heat transfer enhancement than the counterparts with only the dimples in the channels.

[Heat Mass Transfer 51 (2008) 111-124] flow pattern based phenomenological model for diabatic CO2 two phase frictional pressure drop inside horizontal tubes. First, analysis of the existing experimental studies of flow boiling two phase pressure drop is presented and the physical mechanisms are discussed. Then, generalized CO2 flow pattern map and flow pattern based two phase frictional pressure drop model specially developed for CO2 are discussed. Next, new experimental database of diabatic CO2 two phase frictional pressure drop has been set up to evaluate the models. Comparative results of the two phase frictional pressure drop models to the experimental database are analysed. According to the analysis, the physical mechanisms and prediction model of the CO2 two phase flow pressure drop have been well understood. Future research needs in two phase flow frictional pressure drop of CO2 inside channels are recommended according to this comparative study.

Five articles are included, covering various topics in experimental and numerical studies of heat transfer enhancement: (1) subcooled jet impingement boiling enhanced by porous surface with micro-column array; (2) numerical investigation of internal cooling enhancement with Coriolis force in rotating gas turbine blades; (3) enhanced uniformity of airflow and temperature distribution for produce cooling in a cold room based on the field synergy principle; (4) enhanced heat transfer and thermal performance factor of coiled wire inserted rGO/Co 3 O 4 hybrid nanofluid circulate in a horizontal tube; and (5) experimental investigation of the influences of fluid properties on heat transfer for spray cooling.

This review provides a brief literature survey on enhanced heat transfer research. A heat transfe... more This review provides a brief literature survey on enhanced heat transfer research. A heat transfer topic search in the Web of Science resulted in over 28,000 papers published in 2020 and nearly 30% were relevant to heat transfer intensification. The chosen studies focus on various heat transfer enhancement research categorized into conduction, convection, radiation, boiling and condensation, energy storage, thermal management, and cross research involving two or more categories. Heat conduction papers are selected from the micro/nanoscale areas with a focus on interfacial phenomena. Important active, passive, and compound techniques for enhancing convective heat transfer are incorporated. Thermal radiation is concentrated on near-field radiation and solar energy. Heat transfer enhancement in boiling and condensation as well as in thermal energy storage, renewable and sustainable energy, and thermal management of electronics and high-end equipment is critical in many engineering applications. Significant attempts have been made to research and development on heat transfer enhancement technology covering both conventional and emerging techniques in 2020. Research of emerging techniques using new interfacial materials, nanofluids, micro- and nano-structures, microchannels, and new compound enhancement techniques incorporating conventional and new techniques becomes popular. However, there are big challenges in understanding the mechanisms, engineering design methodology and applications with these emerging techniques. Many aspects are urgently needed to be investigated and developed.

On the Phenomenal Mechanisms and Prediction Methods of Flow Boiling Heat Transfer in Microchannels

This keynote paper presents a comprehensive analysis of phenomenal mechanisms and the available c... more This keynote paper presents a comprehensive analysis of phenomenal mechanisms and the available correlations and models of flow boiling heat transfer in micro-channels. First, studies on flow boiling heat transfer behaviours and mechanisms in microchannels are presented. Then, the available correlations and models of flow boiling heat transfer in micro-channels are reviewed and analysed. Comparisons of 12 correlations with a database covering a wide range of test parameters and 8 fluids are presented. It shows that all correlations poorly agree to the database. Furthermore, comparisons of the mechanistic flow boiling heat transfer models based on flow patterns including the Thome at al. three-zone heat transfer model for evaporation in microchannel and the flow pattern based model combining the Thome et al. three zone heat transfer models with the Cioncolini-Thome annular flow model for both macro-and microchannel to the database are presented. It shows that the flow pattern based model combining the three zone model with the annular flow model gives better prediction than the three zone heat transfer model alone. The flow pattern based heat transfer model favourably agrees with the experimental database. According to the comparison and analysis, suggestions have been given for improving the prediction methods in the future. Furthermore, flow patterned based phenomenological models and their applications to micro channels are discussed. According to this comprehensive review and analysis of the current research on the flow boiling heat transfer mechanisms and prediction methods in micro-channels, the future research needs have been identified and recommended. In general, systematic and accurate experimental data of flow boiling heat transfer in micro-channels are still needed although a large amount of work has been done over the past decades. The channel size effect on the flow boiling behaviours should be systematically investigated. Heat transfer mechanisms in micro-channels should be further understood and related to the corresponding flow patterns. Furthermore, effort should be made to develop and improve generalised mechanistic prediction methods and theoretical models for flow boiling heat transfer in micro-channels according to the physical phenomena/mechanisms and the corresponding flow structures. The effects of the channel size and a wide range of test conditions and fluid types should be considered in developing new prediction methods.

In this retrospective study, we assessed the association between expression levels and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and its prognostic value. Using RNA-seq data from HNSCC tumors (N=520) and adjacent normal tissue (N=44) in The Cancer Genome Atlas, we evaluated expression levels. Additionally, we evaluated the association of expression levels and pathophysiological features of patients with HNSCC and the value of expression for prediction of overall survival (OS). We also explored the correlation between expression and methylation of its promoter in HNSCC. expression was significantly upregulated in HNSCC compared with normal tissues. Moreover, expression was significantly associated with smoking, alcohol abuse, sex, human papillomavirus status, tumor site, tumor invasion, and pathologic stage in HNSCC patients. ...

In order to design evaporators for the CO2 thermal systems effectively, it is essential to unders... more In order to design evaporators for the CO2 thermal systems effectively, it is essential to understand the fundamentals and mechanisms of flow boiling heat transfer, flow patterns and two-phase flow characteristics of CO2 inside horizontal tubes including both the macro-and micro-channels. The proper prediction models for CO2 flow boiling heat transfer should be relevant to the physical mechanisms and corresponding flow patterns. This paper presents a comprehensive review of flow boiling heat transfer and two-phase flow of CO2 characteristics and their prediction methods. First, the review addresses the extensive experimental studies on flow boiling heat transfer and two-phase flow in macro-channels and micro-channels. Then, The studies of CO2 two-phase flow patterns are summarized. Furthermore, the effects of oil on the flow boiling heat transfer and two-phase pressure drops are analyzed. The generalized mechanistic models for flow boiling heat transfer and two-phase pressure drops of CO2 and a new flow pattern map specially for CO2, which cover both macro-and micro-channels developed by Cheng et al. are presented and compared to the experimental data in the literature. It has been proved that the models and flow maps favorably agree with the experimental data. In the application aspect, comparison of simulation results and the experimental data in the real thermal systems are presented.

This keynote lecture presents a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art research on nanoflui... more This keynote lecture presents a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art research on nanofluid two phase flow and thermal physics. First, studies of the physical properties of nanofluids are summarized. Then, analysis of the available experimental studies on nucleate boiling and critical heat flux (CHF) is presented. Next, flow boiling and two phase flow of nanofluid in macroscale and microscale channels are discussed. Finally, analysis and discussion of the existing correlations and models with the relevant physical properties are presented. According to this comprehensive review, future research needs have been identified. So far, fundamentals of boiling heat transfer and CHF phenomena of nanofluids have not yet been well understood. Therefore, systematic accurate experiments and flow regime observations of boiling heat transfer and CHF phenomena with various types of nanofluids under a wide range of test conditions should be emphasized. Furthermore, physical mechanisms, theory and prediction methods for boiling heat transfer, two phase flow and CHF characteristics should be targeted at in the future. Practical application of nanofluid two phase flow and heat transfer should also be considered.

First, the review addresses the extensive experimental studies on flow boiling heat transfer and two-phase flow in macro-channels and micro-channels. Then, The studies of CO2 two-phase flow patterns are summarized. Furthermore, the effects of oil on the flow boiling heat transfer and two-phase pressure drops are analyzed. The generalized mechanistic models for flow boiling heat transfer and two-phase pressure drops of CO2 and a new flow pattern map specially for CO2, which cover both macro-and micro-channels developed by Cheng et al. are presented and compared to the experimental data in the literature. It has been proved that the models and flow maps favorably agree with the experimental data. In the application aspect, comparison of simulation results and the experimental data in the real thermal systems are presented.

Two Phase Flow and Thermal Physics of Nanofluids: Understanding the Fundamentals, Mechanisms and Challenges

This keynote lecture presents a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art research on nanoflui... more This keynote lecture presents a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art research on nanofluid two phase flow and thermal physics. First, studies of the physical properties of nanofluids are summarized. Then, analysis of the available experimental studies on nucleate boiling and critical heat flux (CHF) is presented. Next, flow boiling and two phase flow of nanofluid in macroscale and microscale channels are discussed. Finally, analysis and discussion of the existing correlations and models with the relevant physical properties are presented. According to this comprehensive review, future research needs have been identified. So far, fundamentals of boiling heat transfer and CHF phenomena of nanofluids have not yet been well understood. Therefore, systematic accurate experiments and flow regime observations of boiling heat transfer and CHF phenomena with various types of nanofluids under a wide range of test conditions should be emphasized. Furthermore, physical mechanisms, theory and prediction methods for boiling heat transfer, two phase flow and CHF characteristics should be targeted at in the future. Practical application of nanofluid two phase flow and heat transfer should also be considered.
