The fact that these enormous fortifications have not been investigated yet by archaeologists (except for the superficial excavation made by M. Moga in 1939) causes their utility and dating to remain uncertain. The new Google Earth software has given an unsuspected advantage to the archeological survey research in Banat region, through the accuracy of the satellite images it provides in the 15 m clarity band, on the corridor between Arad and Timisoara. With the help of these images and as a result of numerous field researches our team (made up of Dorel Micle, /LYLX 0 UXLD 0LUFHD $UGHOHDQ $GULDQ &vQWDU IURP WKH :HVW 8QLYHUVLW\ RI 7LPLúRDUD DQG /HRQDUG 'RURJRVWDLVN\ $OFDWHO 5RPkQLD KDG WKH FKDQFH WR discover a significant number of settlements dating from prehistoric ages up to the dawn of the Modern Age. Many of the discoveries are new and the results of these investigations from Banat will be published punctually by our team.

Analysis of a magnetic map allows one to determine more than just the shape and the location of a... more Analysis of a magnetic map allows one to determine more than just the shape and the location of a magnetic feature; the direction of total magnetization within that feature may also be estimated. This direction may reveal additional information about the feature. If the direction is the same as Earth's current field, the object may be magnetized by induction (a refilled pit could cause this direction); if the feature has remanent magnetization, it may have been fired (or otherwise magnetized) recently. If this direction is different, remanent magnetization is likely to be predominant in the feature. If the direction is far from Earth's field, the object has probably moved from the place where it was magnetized. If the direction is within about 45° of the Earth's field, there is a possibility that remanent magnetization could reveal the ancient direction of the Earth's field, and an archaeomagnetic date may be possible. If the direction of magnetization is almost horizontal, the object might be an elongated artifact of iron or steel. This is because long artifacts might be horizontal in the soil; self-demagnetization will then cause the inclination of magnetization to be near zero. If this direction is both toward the horizon and also toward magnetic north, the artifact might be made of iron, rather than steel, for induced magnetization may then be more important. These directions of magnetization may be determined from mathematical models of the anomalies that are found in a magnetic map. In addition to these directions, the models may also allow a good estimate of the depth of magnetic materials, and also their quantity (volume or mass). Many of the objects that are detected during an archaeological survey are rather compact and cause an anomaly that is similar to that of a dipole. Six parameters define each dipole: Magnetic moment, direction of total magnetization (inclination and declination), and location (X, Y, Z). A seventh parameter, the magnitude of the Earth's magnetic field at the location of the anomaly, must also be determined during the analysis.

Măgura" Uroiului (Hunedoara County, Romania). An Archaeological Site from the perspective of Land... more Măgura" Uroiului (Hunedoara County, Romania). An Archaeological Site from the perspective of Landscape Archaeology. The archaeological site of "Magura Uroiului" (Hunedoara County) is one of the most complex sites in Romania due to its geomorphologic qualities and continuously habitation from prehistory through the Middle Ages. It is a hill with volcanic origin and a series of natural platforms. It was a favorable place both for military fortifications, for civil settlements, and also for quarrying stone. In 2008 a wide-landscape archaeology study was started that includes a detailed digital cartography of the terrain and a 3D reconstruction of the whole archaeological complex and a paleomorphology study. Integrated remote sensing methods (satellite images analysis and geophysical prospects) were used. The first step was a detailed topographical measurement of the site's surface with the help of a total station (over 100 hectares) in order to reveal all micro-relief details, both natural and manmade. The second step was the editing of GIS spatial data, 2D and 3D graphic reconstructions. The third step was the analysis of the geomorphologic evolution of the terrain, the identification and interpretation of man-made features, the recognition of the ways of human intervention in the environment and of the causes and effects generated in the local ecosystem. The fourth step was a interdisciplinary analysis combining remote sensing and geophysical prospects in order to establish the exact inhabited areas, fortification system, road network, etc. Our study is meant to be a multidisciplinary analysis and aims to establish the relationship between man and environment, the difficult part being the extraordinary complexity of this site and its dimensions.

In 1932, Grigore Florescu conducts an excavation campaign in the "Rovină" (or "Pustă") point castrum, unveiling the superior part of the path of the fortified wall and a part of the commandment building (Principia). Starting with 1996, Ovidiu Bozu also begins systematic research archaeological campaigns for the "Rovină"/"Pustă" point. Since 1999 Eduard Németh from "Babeş-Bolyai" University of Cluj Napoca, joined the research team.

Cod sit: 155537.03 Autorizaţia de cercetare arheologică sistematică nr. 87/2006 Colectiv: Adrian ... more Cod sit: 155537.03 Autorizaţia de cercetare arheologică sistematică nr. 87/2006 Colectiv: Adrian Bejan, Liviu Măruia (UV Timişoara) Până în anul 2005 lotul se afla în proprietatea cetăţeanului Negoţ Traian, iar în urma unui schimb de teren efectuat prin mijlocirea Primăriei Oraşului Sânnicolau Mare, terenul a fost scos din circuitul agricol până în anul 2010 pentru efectuarea investigaţiilor arheologice. Terenul este situat pe şoseaua Sânnicolau Mare-Arad, la 500 de m de ieşirea din Sânnicolau, pe latura nordică a şoselei, la 0,5 km de aceasta. Situl este amplasat pe o terasă aluvionară înaltă, înconjurat din trei părţi de zone inundabile în antichitate, formate de meandrele unor braţe moarte ale pârâului Aranca. Cercetările arheologice sistematice au demarat începând din anul 1995. S-a stabilit stratigrafia sitului, succesiunea nivelelor de locuire şi zonele cu pondere maximă pentru fiecare nivel. Din anul 2000 s-a iniţiat o a doua etapă de cercetare pentru a se determina raportul dintre complexele de locuire. Campania anului 2006, desfăşurată pe parcursul a trei săptămâni, în cursul lunii iulie, a avut ca obiective principale atât corelarea cu elementele de interes arheologic apărute pe parcursul anului precedent, cât şi lămurirea întinderii spre V (limita superioară a platoului) a aşezării feudale şi a necropolei postromane. În acest sens s-au trasat următoarele secţiuni: S1/2006 (S30) a avut dimensiunile de 20 x 2 m, orientată E-V şi amplasată în continuarea secţiunii S3/2005 (S29), la 1 m S de aceasta şi a avut drept obiectiv corelarea cu elementele de interes arheologic care ţin de necropola medievală şi, îndeosebi, postromană. S2/2006 (S31) a avut dimensiunile de 20 x 2 m, orientată de asemenea E-V, înspre latura vestică a platoului "Selişte", deschisă cu scopul de a elucida extinderea aşezării şi necropolei înspre extremitatea vestică a platoului. Este amplasată la 15,5 m V de extremitatea vestică a S1/2006 şi 8,5 m N de talvegul exterior nordic al drumului de ţară care străbate aşezarea. Între S1 şi S2/2006 se află plasate secţiunile S1 şi S2/2004, cât şi S1/2005, toate trei dispuse perpendicular, pe direcţia N-S. S3/2006 (S32) a avut dimensiunile de 8 x 2 m, fiind plasată la 0,5 m de extremitatea estică a S2/2006 şi având orientarea E-V. Raţionamentul deschiderii acestei secţiuni a fost acela de a asigura succesiunea neîntreruptă cu secţiunile anilor precedenţi (S1 şi S2/2004 cât şi S1/2005) şi de a vedea dispunerea elementelor arheologice fără hiatusuri, această secţiune distrugând parţial martorii secţiunilor sus-menţionate şi intersectându-le perpendicular. S4/2006 (S33) a avut dimensiunile 10 x 2 m şi următorul amplasament: la 4,50 m de profilul sudic al S1/2006, m. 0 al S4 fiind plasat în dreptul m. m5 din S1. Între S1 şi S4/2006 se află plasată S3/2005. Orientarea este E-V. Scopul deschiderii acestei secţiuni s-a legat de lămurirea unei eventuale extinderi spre S a necropolei postromane descoperite, în această zonă, în campania anului 2005.
