Nowadays, companies need to use cross-disciplinary collaborative and human centered design method... more Nowadays, companies need to use cross-disciplinary collaborative and human centered design methodologies for product design to remain competitive. In order to achieve this kind of methodology, cross-disciplinary actors need tools to understand each other. Virtual Reality and 3D User Interaction tools are good solutions to provide these intermediate resources. This study presents a tool dedicated to stylists and mechanical engineers so that they can converge more rapidly and efficiently to an acceptable product. This tool provides mainly a dynamic real-time cross-section view and a multi-material window for a 3D model.

ABSTRACT Concurrent and multidisciplinary product design processes are necessary to maintain the ... more ABSTRACT Concurrent and multidisciplinary product design processes are necessary to maintain the competitiveness of manufacturing industries, but their implementation is complicated by difficulties of collaboration between experts from different areas of expertise. Virtual reality can be used as an intermediate design representation in order to ease this collaboration. Nowadays, virtual reality is already in use in the industry for product design, but it suffers from acceptance issues by product designers. In this paper, we propose the As Soon As Possible methodology for the anthropocentric development of immersive multidisciplinary convergence support tools. These immersive tools can ease interdisciplinary collaboration while providing a response to the lack of virtual reality acceptance by designers. The feasibility of the concept is then demonstrated by an industrial use case.

In order to keep designing products that meet the needs of the end user, a human centered concurrent product design methodology has been proposed. Its setting up is complicated by the difficulties of collaboration between experts involved in the design process. In order to ease this collaboration, we propose the use of virtual reality as an intermediate design representation in the form of light and specialized immersive convergence support applications. Therefore immersive application developers must be able to quickly develop numerous applications. In order to keep designing user satisfactory products, a human centered, concurrent and collaborative product design methodology has been proposed. The setting up of this methodology is complicated by the difficulties of collaboration between professions. In order to overcome these difficulties, the use of virtual reality as an intermediate design representation is proposed through the implementation of immersive convergence support tools. In order to develop these specific applications, the ASAP methodology, aiming to assist immersive software designers, is proposed. This methodology is an on-going research work and this paper presents a case study: the design of a support tool for ergonomic-style convergence.
