Unlike the European Union or Brazil, which already have specific AI laws, there is no comprehensive Philippine law yet that governs or serves as a general legal framework for Artificial Intelligence. Nevertheless, the Philippines' Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) recently launched a national artificial intelligence (AI) roadmap, making it one of the first 50 nations in the world to do so. It is hoped that by coming up with an AI roadmap, the Philippines will be able to benefit from the AI and at the same time produce its own laws governing the applications of Artificial Intelligence. AI being a software or a program finds its way in Philippine laws on intellectual property law.

The Philippines is the leading producer of genetically modified food crops in Southeast Asia, but... more The Philippines is the leading producer of genetically modified food crops in Southeast Asia, but the legal status of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), under which broad category genetically modified food crops fall, has not yet been validly upheld with finality by the Supreme Court in its latest 2016 decision. Debates on GMOs' safety and claims of food productivity have escalated to a global level, and they have not escaped the Philippines. In 2015 and 2016, the Supreme Court found two occasions to rule on the constitutionality of GMOs. Its first decision in 2015 gained worldwide attention for being the first court in the world to use the precautionary principle in ruling against the testing of a genetically modified eggplant (bT Talong).
