Characterization of OPCPA with BBO crystal for femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulses

We have numerically and experimentally investigated the characteristics of the optical parametric... more We have numerically and experimentally investigated the characteristics of the optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) of femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulses by using BBO crystals. Numerical calculations showed that a high gain and a broad gain bandwidth could be obtained with a 532-nm pump laser. The dependence of the gain profile of OPA on phase matching angles, pump intensity, and crystal length was numerically investigated. Experimental results showed that the broadband amplification of femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulses could be realized by OPCPA and that the temporal fluctuation of a pump laser resulted in the modulation of amplified spectra in OPCPA.

ABSTRACT A laser-induced repetitively operated fast neutron source was developed by using a deute... more ABSTRACT A laser-induced repetitively operated fast neutron source was developed by using a deuterated polystyrene film target and a femtosecond laser with a peak output power of approximately 24 TW and was applied for laser activation analyses of indium and gold samples. By using a home-made gated scintillation detector, the developed neutron source was estimated to have a neutron yield of approximately 4 × 105 n/pulse at a pulse repetition rate of 5 Hz. For the neutron yield, relatively strong delayed gamma spectra were measured at 138 keV, 417 keV, 1097 keV, and 1294 keV for the activated indium, and at 333 keV and 355 keV for the activated gold. In addition to the delayed spectra, several prompt gamma spectra were measured during gold activation. These suggest possible uses of the neutron source for activation analysis of various materials.

The condition for the coherent addition of the relativistic nonlinear Thomson scattered (RNTS) ra... more The condition for the coherent addition of the relativistic nonlinear Thomson scattered (RNTS) radiations from a group of electrons is derived. Numerical calculations show that under such a condition, all the characteristics of RNTS radiation by a single electron are maintained, leading to the generation of intense attosecond x rays. Such an attosecond x ray is produced in a specific direction with a very narrow angular divergence. An x-ray radiation of ∼1016W∕cm2 with a pulse width of 7.7 as is expected for an oblique irradiation of a 20 fs linearly polarized laser pulse of 4×1019W∕cm2 on a 7 nm thick film target. For the proof-of-principle experiment, the radiation characteristics from a 50 nm thick film target are presented and discussed.

It is demonstrated in a numerical simulation that an intense fs keV x-ray pulse can be generated ... more It is demonstrated in a numerical simulation that an intense fs keV x-ray pulse can be generated by the interaction of a tightly focused femtosecond laser copropagating with an electron bunch. In general, the interaction of a loosely focused (focal spot $100 m in diameter) laser with a copropagating electron is rather weak so that the radiation is not only weak but also produced in the vicinity of laser wavelength. However, in the case of tight focus (focal spot on the order of wavelength), the radiation characteristics turn out to be drastically different so that a keV x-ray pulse can be produced at high flux. This is due to the nonparaxial fields induced in a tight-focus regime. The radiation characteristics are discussed for different beam waists and electron beam energies. This simulation suggests that the interaction of a tightly focused laser with a copropagating electron bunch can be a unique source for an x-ray pulse of the photon energy from 10 to 100 keV that lasts a few femtoseconds.

Another regime of operation for the significant amplification of C VI Hα radiation in a capillary... more Another regime of operation for the significant amplification of C VI Hα radiation in a capillary-discharged carbon plasma is proposed. This suggested regime of operation features the existence of gain at the axis of a capillary, the large gain region (several hundred micrometers in diameter), and the hollow electron density profile for the better guiding of the radiation being amplified. All these features help to overcome the previous problems and favor the high amplification of the radiation.
