In this paper we describe how learners need awareness information about co-learners in computer-s... more In this paper we describe how learners need awareness information about co-learners in computer-supported collaborative learning systems. Awareness is essential for working collaboratively and for building a learning community. If the learner doesn&#39;t know anything about his/hers co-learners, there can&#39;t be any community, which means that there can&#39;t be any real collaboration either. In this paper we first describe a theoretical background for our research after which we introduce one possible solution to solve the demands for awareness in a Web-based conferencing systems. We also present our initial implementation of awareness support and report experiences from a course using the system.

Existing static visualization techniques for eye-tracking data do not make it possible to easily ... more Existing static visualization techniques for eye-tracking data do not make it possible to easily compare temporal information, that is, gaze paths. We review existing techniques and then propose a new technique that treats time as the prime attribute to be visualized. We successfully used the new technique for analysing the visual scanning of web search results listings. Based on our experiences, the new visualization is a valuable tool when the temporal order of visiting Areas of Interest (AOI) is the main focus in the analysis, the AOIs have a natural linear order, there are many AOIs to produce interesting patterns, and the AOIs fill most of the coordinate space being studied.

Towards Deeper Understanding of How People Perceive Design

Studying how people look at a product is important for understanding human interpretation of desi... more Studying how people look at a product is important for understanding human interpretation of design products. This research studies the perception of design products by using eye tracking technology and applying established usability research methods. The gaze path analysis shows that people look at the same product differently depending on their motivation. Our initial findings suggest that people have at least three different first impression perception strategies - narrow, holistic and combined strategy. New knowledge of how people perceive products may help designers in presenting their ideas and in completing the designs.

The theoretical framework of our study understands discussion as communication in which the students contribute to the construction of a common opinion by taking positions. Position taking is described by applying Positioning Theory dealing with student identity. In this study students were engaged in a small group discussion in an online environment in which they were required to debate on their proposals and take a vote at the end. We provide quantitative and qualitative analyses of their discussion and those issues that describe the winning proposals. The analyses in this paper show that the quality of the original proposal is indeed closely related to winning. However, our results indicate that students can influence the success of the decision process by taking an active part in the discussion. Together Forever, or How We Created a Common and Collaborative Digital Preservation Service

Collaboration is a key to success in digital preservation. In Finland we have, within the nationa... more Collaboration is a key to success in digital preservation. In Finland we have, within the national digital preservation services, established a successful model of collaboration with archives, libraries and museums to preserve our digital cultural heritage. Collaboration is essential through the whole life cycle of digital assets as digital preservation needs to be a dynamic activity in a constantly changing environment. In association with archives, libraries and museums we are able to build capabilities that are needed for digital preservation. We stipulate that we have been able to create a unified and centralized preservation service with a set of common specifications only through a close collaboration with the data curators.

Modular Pre-Ingest Tool for Diverse Needs of Producers

We introduce an open-source pre-ingest tool that assists the generation of Submission Information... more We introduce an open-source pre-ingest tool that assists the generation of Submission Information Packages (SIPs) that are to be submitted to the national digital preservation service in Finland. The pre-ingest tool consists of several independent components that produce the parts of a METS document required by the national preservation service. These components are easy to modify when developing services for different user demands or for different repositories. Users of the tool provide the necessary information as parameters for the tool, which produces the structure and descriptions for the SIP. The pre-ingest tool reduces the need to deeply understand either METS, PREMIS or other metadata formats to be able to preserve digital assets.

We present the status and challenges in digital preservation of the National Digital Library (NDL... more We present the status and challenges in digital preservation of the National Digital Library (NDL) of Finland. The NDL aims to create a nationally unified structure for contents and services ensuring the effective and high-quality management, dissemination, and digital preservation of cultural digital information resources. NDL’s basis is formed by libraries, archives, museums, and other organizations in Finland storing cultural heritage material and the actors responsible for their IT solutions affecting hundreds of organizations. We believe that nationally shared digital preservation infrastructure and services will draw the practices of memory organizations closer, reduce the costs and fragmented nature of the systems, and intensify cooperation. Given the diversity of partner organizations, the digital content to be preserved makes up a very heterogeneous whole. This paper deals with collaborative learning in asynchronous web discussions with special focus ... more This paper deals with collaborative learning in asynchronous web discussions with special focus on how student-led pair moderating can benefit from synchronous communication. We study this in connection with a course of 33 students who used a conferencing system with special tools to support the moderating task. We provide quantitative and qualitative analysis of the tools, which include both a synchronous chat facility and an asynchronous note-taking tool. Although not all of our students adopted these facilities, we found out that the availability of several support facilities seems necessary to encompass the styles and habits of various learners. Having a moderator chat facility within the conferencing system and restricting it only between two persons seemed to guide the students to be more task-oriented than in typical chat sessions.
