The paper uses a phenomenological approach and four qualitative methods (survey, interview, focus groups and document analysis) to investigate what a sample of these scholars perceive as high-quality research. We found that the participants viewed quality through various lenses and identified several different criteria. We categorised their elaboration of the criteria under three headings: methodology, contextualisation and impact. The participants nominated many general criteria that were similar to western standards of research quality, especially in relation to methodology; however, some contextual criteria were specific to the Chinese context. The paper indicates that there is much in the university research community that could be altered to enable people who are directly involved in research to disseminate their criteria for research quality, and potentially to affect and develop the quality of educational research in the Chinese context, and/or elsewhere.

Nevertheless the persistence of certain misconceptions among some students did indicate the partial salience of the effect in Postgraduate Certificate in Education science courses. Although the students' confidence in their knowledge of various topics, as indicated in self‐audits, was positively related to their actual knowledge as displayed in their test answers, the relationship between confidence and knowledge was not strong, particularly for the biology topics.

Seeking to be creative, offering community leadership, taking a second career are just some examples of what is becoming commonplace. However, one of the biggest problems we face is that those who are less visible in the community, such as older and retired people, or people living in isolated rural areas, usually have fewer opportunities to meet people and thus can easily find themselves disengaged from society. This can frustrate their desires to participate in society. Many may then become depressed and lonely, lacking the motivation to become re-engaged with their neighbourhood. They then gradually lose their identity as valuable and valued members of society, and often their health begins to suffer as well, producing personal distress and imposing additional demands on health care. This position paper proposes a qualitative study of an intervention aimed at improving the lives of older people in terms of issues raised by the literature, and describes appropriate methodology and methods for answering these questions, which we see as essentially educational questions within the framework of lifelong learning.

When this is done, students as well as teachers are forced to attempt to develoo the appropriate linkages. This book is one of a series designed to help teachers develop their science and technological education in ways that are both satisfying to themselves and stimulating to their students. Chapter 1, "Introductions," includes an overview of the concerns of those in the field and a layout of the book. Chapter 2, "Different pupils, different responses," discusses some of the differences that exist among students. These differences are listed as educational, psychological, physical, social, and cultural. Chapter 3, "Responding to pupil differences: some possible teaching tactics," is concerned with the teaching tactics that can be used to respond to the individual characteristics of pupils so that each can be helped to learn sci^nce effectively. Chapter 4, "Responding to pupil differences: some possible classroom strategies," discusses two different approaches: mastery and flexible learning. The final chapter, "Putting the ideas to use," links theory and practice so that readers will be better able to make use of the book in relation to their own teaching. (ZWH)
