Higher education remains embroiled in transition driven by cost of attendance, technological adva... more Higher education remains embroiled in transition driven by cost of attendance, technological advances, globalization, hyper-competition, and stakeholder expectations. Concurrently, advances in online education have prompted increased integration within the educational enterprise. Not only are modern institutions faced with the necessity to respond to the changing educational environment, they must establish capabilities to sustain online education into the future. This paper examines the viable system model (VSM) as a mechanism to deal with this complexity and offers a framework through which leadership and management in online education can increase understanding of organizational sustainability and systemic management.

Can A True Faith-Based Education Be Delivered Online?

Can a faith-based education be as effective when delivered online as when it is delivered face-to... more Can a faith-based education be as effective when delivered online as when it is delivered face-to-face? An in-depth look at the early adopters of the online technology reveals that it can be if the Christian university commits itself to developing an online learning community and to interweaving faith principles into crucial areas of its online program. The three key areas of faith integration upon which hinges the success of such programs are the integration of faith into course material, faith integration in the relationships among students, and faith integration in the faculty student relationships. Consistent attention to these three areas validates the online Christian education model, complements the missions of Christian institutions, supports the integration of faith and learning, and enables institutions to reach audiences that may not be currently accessible.

In addition, online education potentially offers a color free environment where students are less likely to be judged by race and treated more equally as this is one of the benefits of online education. However, African American male students are not as likely to enroll in online classes. This literature review examined factors related to African American male students and the online course environment including general characteristics of online learners, attrition rates among online courses, and gender gaps in both onsite and online courses within higher education. In addition, African American student online enrollment trends, characteristics of African American online learners, achievement gaps in both onsite and online courses within higher education, the influence technology and user skills as well as economics and academic influences that may have contributed to African American male online learners' positive experience were reviewed.

Because of the increased use of the Delphi method, more information is needed for researchers to precisely execute a successful Delphi study. This chapter briefly introduces the Delphi method, reviews the methodology, discusses types and variations in Delphi studies, addresses the advantages and limitations, and provides clear, step-by-step guidelines for employing a Delphi method research study. 1. African American Males Learning Online: Promoting Academic Achievement in Higher Education

Online education is expanding within higher education. However, attrition rates for African Ameri... more Online education is expanding within higher education. However, attrition rates for African American males enrolled in higher education in general, and in online courses specifically, is on the rise. Because the future of our nation depends on how well our educational institutions develop, nurture, and deploy talent, this study identified factors that promoted online course completion among African American male undergraduate students. The researchers interviewed 10 males who successfully completed online courses and identified significant themes. Factors that contributed to online course completion were financial assistance, prior academic achievement, previous information technology (IT) training, continuous academic enrollment, student selection of topics perceived as uncomplicated and less demanding or familiar due to sufficient prior knowledge, use of handheld digital devices, and a non-prejudicial learning environment. This study also revealed challenges and obstacles encountered by participants. Based on these findings, the researchers made recommendations that include strategies policymakers and educationalists can implement to promote academic achievement and degree attainment among African American males in higher education.

The selected ten academic librarians were interviewed either face-to-face or virtually with in-depth questions about leadership development. The interviews were analyzed to understand the essence of the participants' experiences and divided into different themes to find patterns. The findings revealed the participants' perceptions regarding the need for leadership development, their participation in leadership opportunities, and the obstacles to attaining leadership development. Implications included the need for more administrative support and for changes to library school curricula.

Because of the continued online enrollment growth, higher educational institutions must prepare faculty throughout their teaching career for learning theory, technical expertise, and pedagogical shifts for teaching in the online environment. This study presents best practices for professional development for faculty teaching online. In this study, the Delphi Method was used to gain consensus from a panel of experts on the essentiality of professional development items to help faculty prepare for teaching in the online environment. After four survey rounds to develop consensus, best practices were identified consisting of essential professional development and institutional/organizational strategies for supporting faculty teaching online. These results are significant for planning new or improving existing faculty development programs that enhance teaching and learning in the online classroom.

Implementing Affective Learning Outcomes Through a Meaning-centered Curriculum

Meaning-centered education situates meaning at the center of teaching and learning (Kovbasyuk &am... more Meaning-centered education situates meaning at the center of teaching and learning (Kovbasyuk &amp; Blessinger, 2013). By incorporating learning objectives from additional learning domains – namely the affective domain – meaning-centered learning should enhance students’ personal and professional identities, as they reinforce existing knowledge through the continuous conscious acquisition of knowledge across learning domains. For this study, instructors integrated the human resource development (HRD) constructs of Level 1 and Level 2 evaluations into an online doctoral strategic planning course to achieve three goals: (A) increase student engagement, (B) assess affective domain learning outcomes, and (C) practice innovative teaching to reinforce creative meaning-centered learning. Infusing an online curriculum with affective learning domain outcomes and weekly formative assessment activities allowed instructors to monitor and address affective attributes. Results suggest that the implementation of Level 1 and Level 2 evaluations as weekly formative assessments increased student engagement. Extended analysis promoted a deeper understanding of the roles that emotions and attitudes play in online learning. Affective learning outcomes were attained as these additional weekly exercises promoted meaning-centered collaboration with students while decreasing the power-related distance between learners and instructors.

Despite clear calls within the literature for empirical research to support the development of globally prepared education leaders, little research has occurred and no prior peer-reviewed study regarding essential global leadership competencies in education was located. Due to this absence, a Delphi study, conducted in English, French, and Spanish, was conducted with an expert panel of official UNESCO delegates, national delegates of the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network, and senior-level UNESCO Education Sector executives to identify essential leadership competencies for global education leaders. Practical logistics for the management of online Delphi studies explored in this chapter include preparing for a successful study, designing communication strategies, addressing technological considerations, and handling of qualitative and quantitative data.

Because of the increased use of the Delphi method, more information is needed for researchers to precisely execute a successful Delphi study. This chapter briefly introduces the Delphi method, reviews the methodology, discusses types and variations in Delphi studies, addresses the advantages and limitations, and provides clear, step-by-step guidelines for employing a Delphi method research study.

Practical logistics for the management of online Delphi studies explored in this chapter include preparing for a successful study, designing communication strategies, addressing technological considerations, and handling of qualitative and quantitative data.

Because of the continued growth in enrollments, higher educational institutions must prepare faculty throughout their teaching tenure for learning theory, technical expertise, and pedagogical shifts for teaching in the online environment. This study presents best practices for professional development for faculty teaching online. In this study, the Delphi Method was used to gain consensus from a panel experts on the essentiality of professional development items to help faculty prepare for teaching in the online environment. This study included four survey rounds with a panel experts to develop consensus and identify best practices consisting of essential professional development and institutional/organizational strategies for supporting faculty teaching online. These results are significant for planning new or improving existing faculty development programs that enhance teaching and learning in the online classroom.
