is the only Sunday in the Revised Common Lectionary where a portion of chapter eight from the Gos... more is the only Sunday in the Revised Common Lectionary where a portion of chapter eight from the Gospel of John appears. With the exception of an alternate reading from John 7 (7:37-39) for Pentecost Sunday in Year A, chapters seven through eight never appear in the lectionary. Of course, entire books are not included in the lectionary (Esther, for example), but whenever sections of texts are skipped or missing, we should always question why. The responsible preacher will not only investigate the absent verses but also ask the hard theological questions about what verses that have been deemed to cause discomfort. Difficult texts are not likely to appear in regular reading for the general public. Yet how one defines "difficult" is contextually determined. For example, contemporary preachers should think twice before allowing Mark 10:2-12 (Jesus' teaching on divorce) to be read out loud in a congregation only then to preach on a different passage altogether. Lectionaries, for all of their benefits-and there are many-are also censoring tools. They predetermine theological thinking. They prescribe set relationships between texts. They choose the lenses through which we are invited to interpret texts. Yet when entire chapters are absent, that should be cause for significant question.

But as preaching is also about interpreting the lives of our parishioners, the interaction of car and congregation, of transportation and transformative proclamation, is an important reminder of how the Bible and our preaching must intersect daily living in meaningful ways. For indeed, the advent of and reliance on the automobile has had an extraordinary effect on how we go about our lives and our daily work. We would benefit from sustained reflection on how this influences our life and work of faith as well. The focus of this issue of Word & World also raises the question of how we preach the Bible or word of God when invention and technology create ever further distance between us and the world of Scripture. Where do we find points of transference and moments of meaning in the biblical text so that our sermons take life in the lives of our people? As we drive around in the privacy, privilege, and convenience of our automobiles, how do we engage narratives that tell of travel from Judea to Galilee by foot, or from Tiberias to Capernaum by boat? How do we relate to the work of discipleship, of apostleship, of fishermen, tradespeople, and tent

Book Review: Serving the Word: Preaching in Worship

THE TITLE OF THIS BOOK aptly and pointedly describes its primary focus. The word of God is the fo... more THE TITLE OF THIS BOOK aptly and pointedly describes its primary focus. The word of God is the foundational principle of Christian worship. All of what the church should be about is to serve the word in worship, preaching, and sacrament. The book’s thesis argues for the mutuality of relationship between worship and preaching,“because both are founded in the word of God” (p. 7). As worship serves the preached word, preaching serves the liturgical word. Melinda Quivik uses the Emmaus story (Luke 24:13–35) as both a foundational and biblical basis for the church’s liturgical pattern. Gathering, word, meal/response, and sending as incarnated in the road to Emmaus eliminate any kind of separation we might try to make between preaching and worship.“Preaching and the breaking of bread are intimately connected” (p. 2). Quivik also grounds the pattern of the worshiping community in the historical context of the Reformation’s insistence on the relationship between faith, the word, and the meal. On the basis of this theological, biblical, and historical framework, Quivik turns to a case study in order to illuminate the kinds of issues that surface when attention is given to the reciprocity of preaching and worship. Ash Wednesday serves as the liturgical example by which to view the relationship between sermon preparation and worship structure. The remainder of the book tends to each of the movements in worship separately, using the specificity of the Ash Wednesday example to identify particular questions and challenges in each stage of the church’s liturgical pattern. This volume in the Elements of Preaching series (O. Wesley Allen Jr., editor) will find an audience in pastors looking for a theological refresher, or perhaps a theological rationale, for the relationship between preaching and worship. The most fitting audience, however, is the seminary preaching class, where a principal goal is to help students realize that the sermon is not an isolated event. The lens of service and mutuality between sermon and worship provides a critical perspective for beginning preachers who tend to imagine a call to the preached word alone. A more pointed analysis of the difficulties in maintaining this reciprocity would lend a certain candidness about the challenges of mutuality when trying to respect the specificity and particularity of each biblical lesson. While Quivik’s argument for the hertzpunkt (heart point) that unifies the lectionary texts, and thus justifies a sermon on all three lections, is a useful hermeneutical tool, a more developed critique of the lectionary might contribute to an appreciation of the worship service that is as unique as the voice of each biblical text.
