This paper presents the application of coherent vortex simulation (CVS) filtering, based on an or... more This paper presents the application of coherent vortex simulation (CVS) filtering, based on an orthogonal wavelet decomposition of vorticity, to study mixing in 2D homogeneous isotropic turbulent flows. The Eulerian and Lagrangian dynamics of the flow are studied by comparing the evolution of a passive scalar and of particles advected by the coherent and incoherent velocity fields, respectively. The former is responsible for strong mixing and produces the same anomalous diffusion as the total flow, due to transport by the coherent vortices, while mixing in the latter is much weaker and corresponds to classical diffusion.
A comparison between two different ways of extracting coherent vortices in three-dimensional (3D)... more A comparison between two different ways of extracting coherent vortices in three-dimensional (3D) homogeneous isotropic turbulence is performed, using either orthogonal or biorthogonal wavelets. The method is based on a wavelet decomposition of the vorticity field and a subsequent thresholding of the wavelet coefficients. The coherent vorticity is reconstructed from a few strong wavelet coefficients, while the incoherent vorticity is reconstructed from the remaining weak coefficients. The choice of the threshold, which has no adjustable parameters, is motivated for the orthogonal case from the denoising theory. Using only 3% of the coefficients we show that both decompositions, that is orthogonal and biorthogonal, extract the coherent vortices. They contain most of the energy (around 99% in both cases) and retain 74% and 68% of the enstrophy in the orthogonal and biorthogonal cases, respectively. The incoherent background flow for the orthogonal decomposition, which corresponds to 97% of the wavelet coefficients, is structureless, decorrelated, and has a Gaussian velocity probability distribution function (PDF). In contrast, for the biorthogonal decomposition, the background flow exhibits quasitwo-dimensional (2D) structures and yields an exponential velocity PDF. Moreover, the biorthogonal decomposition loses 3.7% of both enstrophy and helicity, while they are conserved by the orthogonal decomposition.

The coherent flow is reconstructed from only 3%N wavelet coefficients that retain the vortex tubes, and 98.9% of the energy with the same k 25͞3 spectrum as the total flow. In contrast, the remaining 97%N wavelet coefficients correspond to the incoherent flow which is structureless, decorrelated, and whose effect can therefore be modeled statistically.

Ionization schemes for isotopically nonselective ionization of Th as well as for isotopically selective ionization of 23°Th are proposed. The RIS-scheme used is two-photon two-colour ionization with excitation in the ultraviolet spectral range between 244 nm and 267 nm or in the visible spectral range between 485 nm and 529 nm. Ionization of the excited atoms is performed either by ultraviolet photons or by visible photons, depending on the energy required for this process.

Most children reside in households with either two employed parents or an employed single parent. The inflexibility of work and school schedules is a pressure that working parents feel on a daily basis and one that affects their work-related productivity, health, and family life. Whether employed in a white-collar job or in a low-wage one, employed parents often experience anxiety and guilt as they face the obligations of work and family. Parent-role overload and time deprivations are particularly acute problems that many employed mothers and fathers cope with on a daily basis. Overall, work-family conflict leads to decreased psychological well-being. The capsid protein genes of five feline calicivirus (FCV) isolates associated with different dise... more The capsid protein genes of five feline calicivirus (FCV) isolates associated with different disease manifestations were cloned and sequenced. The viruses represented two recent isolates from cats with chronic stomatitis, one recent isolate from a cat with acute stomatitis, one recent isolate each from a cat with acute respiratory symptoms and the classical limping syndrome strain FCV-2280. The amino acid sequences were compared with eight other published sequences and analyzed for their relationships. Phylogenetic analysis of the complete capsid protein sequences or of known antigenic regions of that protein (hypervariable regions A and E) did not group the isolates of different disease manifestations in distinct subclusters. Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) generated against either a chronic stomatitis isolate or a recent isolate associated with respiratory symptoms were tested against a panel of 11 recent isolates and four 'classical' FCV strains, covering all known disease associations. With those MAbs no obvious clustering with respect to disease manifestation could be seen. Four specific sera prepared in rabbits against our prototype isolates also failed to cluster those isolates according to the disease manifestations when examined in neutralization tests. From these antigenic and genetic analyses of the capsid protein the hypothesis of the existence of biotypes of FCV responsible for distinct disease manifestations could not be confirmed.

Furthermore, it is likely that communications will be disrupted in the event of a fault. The approach taken to address these challenges is described.

Application of Graph Grammars in an Educational Software Engineering Game: A Case Study in Pragmatic Adoption

A project situation is modeled and presented to a "player" who is supposed to act as project manager of a simulated project. Events and internal processes of the simulated project are modeled using a custom-designed formalism that integrates attributed graph grammar concepts with a quantitative simulation mechanism resembling System Dynamics. Both ingredients were pragmatically selected and blended based on (1) their comparative simplicity, (2) their expressive power, and (3) their intuitive appeal for bridging the cognitive gap between real-world software engineering experiences and an executable simulation model. This modeling formalism was applied in the SESAM educational software engineering game. The modeling formalism was supported by a family of graphical SESAM editors. Resulting models could be animated and served as simulated projects in the game runs. SESAM was applied in graduate courses on software project management at the University of Stuttgart. Experiences with the modeling approach are reported. The design history and design rationale that led to using graph grammars as the underlying formalism are described and discussed. The design of the SESAM modeling formalism is presented as an (involuntary) case study in adopting a graph grammar approach.

The Reynolds number (Re) is varied from 985 to 7880, and no-slip boundary conditions are approximated by Navier boundary conditions with a slip length proportional to Re À1. Energy dissipation is shown to first set up within a vorticity sheet of thickness proportional to Re À1 in the neighborhood of the wall, and to continue as this sheet rolls up into a spiral and detaches from the wall. The energy dissipation rate integrated over these regions appears to converge towards Re-independent values, indicating the existence of energy dissipating structures that persist in the vanishing viscosity limit.
