Vitamin D is an essential hormone synthesized in the skin. Levels of vitamin D have been found to be low in patients with vitiligo. The purpose of this study is to evaluate if vitamin D levels have any association with vitiligo, by estimating the levels of vitamin D in patients with vitiligo, and correlating type of vitiligo with vitamin D levels. Methods: A hospital based case control study was done in the Dermatology outpatient department of a tertiary center in South India from October 2014 to May 2016. About 45 consenting patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were chosen for the study. About 45 age and sex matched consenting individuals without vitiligo were chosen as controls from the Dermatology outpatient department. A detailed history and clinical examination of all the consenting subjects was done. Blood sam...

So far, about forty patients have been reported worldwide. This disorder results from mutations in the membrane-bound transcription factor protease site 2 gene that impairs cholesterol homeostasis and the ability to cope with endoplasmic reticulum stress. We report this rare case of IFAP with atypical presentation and it was interesting to note that alopecia in this child was confined to eyebrows; this unique presentation has not been described earlier. This rare oculocutaneous disorder requires proper documentation so that identification of its variants may be possible in the future.

It has been a source of distress for humanity since antiquity. The troublesome mite is emerging triumphant over current acaricidal agents with reports of emerging resistance and treatment failures. Scabies in endemic areas and crusted scabies offer additional management challenges. Exploration of indigenous plants and better understanding of mite biology and pathogenesis provide opportunities for the development of novel agents for this common pest. We review the recent diverse approaches to scabies, including the use of novel plant products with a better safety profile, translating the use of moxidectin from veterinary practice to human scabies, vaccination, immunotherapy, and development of drugs that directly target mite molecules.

Pr... more Introduction: Psoriasis is a common skin disorder with no cure and definite treatment options. Propylthiouracil (PTU), an antithyroid drug, has been found to be effective in treating psoriasis in certain studies. This prompted us to conduct a study to assess the effectiveness of PTU in treating patients with psoriasis. Aims: The primary objective of our study was to assess the efficacy of PTU as a safe and effective agent in the management of psoriasis. Settings and Design: This study was a clinical prospective study conducted over a period of 3 months. Materials and Methods: Thirty one patients with psoriasis and those fulfilling the inclusion criteria were treated with PTU (100 mg thrice a day) and topical emollient, and were followed up for 12 weeks. Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) at the baseline and at the end of the study were compared. Patients who attained PASI score 50 were considered to respond to the treatment. Statistical Analysis Used: Mean values of variables. Results: The mean PASI score at the beginning of the treatment with PTU was 17.6. The mean PASI score at the end of the study was 16.06. Conclusions: We found PTU to be ineffective in reducing both the symptoms and severity of psoriasis. It is also intriguing to note that PTU, which was found to be effective in treating psoriasis almost two decades ago, has never been used widely in practice. Probably, this bears testimony to the fact that PTU is not as effective as it was promised to be.

Chronic kidney disease is major health problem. Hemodialysis is the standard treatment for these patients. Chronic kidney failure presents with an array of cutaneous manifestations. The number of CKD patients continue to rise, reflecting growing elderly population and increasing numbers of patients with diabetes and hypertension. 1 Hence we undertook this study to analyse the pattern of cutaneous manifestation in patients with CKD on hemodialysis in our population. METHODS Patient attending Dermatology and Nephrology OPD of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College & Hospital with chronic renal failure from November 2014 to May 2016 was included in the study. After getting informed consent a detailed history of the patient and examination was entered in a pre-prepared proforma. Chronic kidney disease is major health problem. Chronic kidney failure presents with an array of cutaneous manifestations. The objective of the present study was to determine the pattern of mucocutaneous manifestations of chronic renal failure on hemodialysis. Methods: A cross sectional study done in the Dermatology & Nephrology OPD of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital from October 2014 to May 2016. About 38 consenting patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were chosen for the study. The demographic characteristics were included in the study and the clinical profile of the patient such as hematological investigation and renal function tests were assessed. KOH mount, skin biopsy, Woods lamp, Grams stain and culture & sensitivity were done if needed after getting informed consent from the patients. Results: The most common cutaneous manifestations in haemodialysis patients were xerosis and uraemic pruritus. Conclusions: Cutaneous manifestations like uraemic pruritus, Xerosis, Kyrle's disease, infections, icthyosis & other lesions were seen with Xerosis beimg the most common feature. At least one cutaneous manifestation is found in all CRF patients.

Even more rare is to have cutaneous cryptococcosis. We describe in this case report, a case of cutaneous cryptococcosis in a HIV seropositive individual who had skin lesions over the face and trunk resembling molluscum contagiosum. The skin lesions provided the first evidence of disseminated cryptococcosis.

The review emphasises on the various e-learning methods that can be used in the current scenario.MethodsThe review was based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines on databases, namely, PubMed, Google Scholar and Cochrane. Out of 1524 identified articles, after the process of screening and based on the eligibility criteria, 45 full-text articles were reviewed.ResultsThough there are many caveats on the path of successful implementation this is the right time that we step towards e-learning. The article discusses the methods and tools in e-learning that can modify the traditional ways of content delivery, record maintenance, assessment and feedback.ConclusionDuring the period of ‘planet arrest’, when the whole world is locked down with the motive of social distancing, let us stay connected w...

Consumers often present to the dermatologist with adverse cutaneous reactions to these 'fairness' (skin lightening) creams. The composition of these creams has not received sufficient attention. Objective: To identify fragrance, sunscreens, botanicals and potential allergens in the bestseller 'fairness' creams available in the Indian market. Methods: Twenty fairness (or whitening or lightening) creams were selected based on the 'bestseller' creams of one of the largest electronic commerce websites in India, and availability in local stores and unlabelled brands were excluded. Fragrance, sunscreens, botanicals and potential allergens were identified from the ingredient labels. Results: Twenty bestseller fairness creams were included. The number of the listed ingredients in the fairness creams ranged from 6 to 49 (mean = 32.2). The most frequently listed ingredients included water, f...

Before the advent of modern cosmetics, tattoos and hair dyes, the spectacular colors in plants served as a palette for humanity's fascination with color. Skin, hair, nails, teeth and clothing have been altered with botanical colorants for centuries. Understanding the relevance of botanical colorants is an important part of cultural competency. Substitution or adulteration of plant colorants with synthetic colorants has played a role in varied dermatoses (eg. black henna, kumkum, and Holi dermatoses). Safety concerns over synthetic colorants have led to a resurgence of natural colorants. However, some plant colorants have produced adverse reactions. Plant colorants have also played an integral role in medicine. Ingested plant colorants are an indispensable part of our diet, playing crucial roles in the maintenance of health and prevention of disease. Excessive intake of some pigments can alter skin colo...

ACD presenting with skin lesions alone is a rare but specific clinical entity, which differs from hereditary sphingolipidoses such as Fabry's disease.
