A Documentation Study in the Production Process of English Drama Performance. Drama course in Eng... more A Documentation Study in the Production Process of English Drama Performance. Drama course in English Education Department is a course which develops a product in the form of English drama performance. The problem was emerged when there was no sufficient documentation of drama production found in the forms of recording of process of preparation until the performance. This problem motivated the researchers to do the document study of drama course from academic year of 2010/2011 until 2012/2013. The purposes were to collect the information and documentation as complete as possible of drama production process and to know how the process was conducted in order to provide input for the next coming drama courses. The method of data collection was a documentation study which involved literature study, document study, participant observation and interview. The analysis was made based on descriptive qualitative technique. The results were found in terms of documentation data which covered pre-production, production and post-production in the forms of script document, rehearsal process, photos, videos, and mass-media publication as to give concrete information about how the drama production process was done and the quality of the document. The result of the research was documented in the form of drama course online blog englishcoursedrama.blogspot.com to ease the online documentation and enable the public access.

This study was aimed at (1) analyzing kinds of non-verbal communications used by English teachers... more This study was aimed at (1) analyzing kinds of non-verbal communications used by English teachers during the teaching and learning process, (2) revealing what kinds of teachers’ non-verbal communications affect students’ motivation during the learning process in the classroom, (3) discussing the contribution of non-verbal communications in English education. This study was a descriptive qualitative study conducted at SMPN 3 Banjar. The data were collected by video recording, questionnaire administration, and interviewing. There were 2 English teachers involved as the subject of this research, and 40 students of eighth grade in different classes were involved. The results of the study indicate teachers’ non-verbal communication in SMPN 3 Banjar meets the seventh kinds of non-verbal communication proposed by Burgoon, Buller, and Woodall, (1994) as cited in Birjandi and Nushi (2014). This research is aimed at looking at poetry as a soul of society. It brings about the representat... more This research is aimed at looking at poetry as a soul of society. It brings about the representation of selfculture in the poet’s life. It is the representation of mindfulness within the poet’s process of writing. In this specific article, I want to see how poetry can be seen as a soul of poetry from at least three perspectives, firstly from the imagery, secondly from sound and sense and thirdly from the self-culture. The method used in this research is narrative inquiry and the instruments used are interview guide and poetry writing rubrics. The result shows that the poets in this research used imagery, sound and sense and self-culture in their poetry as the voice of their own. At the same time they also feel that their voice matters, as the part of society.

This research aimed to analyze the character of Santiago in resolution part of the novel “The Old... more This research aimed to analyze the character of Santiago in resolution part of the novel “The Old Man and The Sea” by Ernest Hemingway using SFL Appraisal Theory. From the data analysis, it was found that attitude (affect) and graduation (force) dominated the appraisal items in the resolution part of “The Old Man and The Sea”. In total there were 34 appraisal items found. There were 11 appraisal items on affect found (29.72%), 3 items on judgment (8.1%), 1 item on appreciation (2.7%), 5 items on engagement (13.5%) and 17 items on graduation (45.94%). Those expressions developed from character revelation through dialogue and narration on setting, and those difference marks significant importance of character’s development in the resolution part. The character revelations found in the resolution part are: reflective, affectionate (caring and loving), humble, wise, realistic, and optimistic. Thousands of local folktales were told by the storytelling tradition (mesatua Bali) long time ago. But now the tradition is disappearing due to the lack of exposure on local literature. This happens because local literature lost its readers and writers. The readers and writers now tend to choose English literature or Indonesian because the source of Balinese literature is limited. People find it is difficult to have the real Balinese literature in English version. This fact indicates that local literature is about to be forgotten. There should be more exposure on local literature given to the students. They need to be familiarized with local folktales, songs, and even drama. Local folktales and drama can be used as a medium to teach speaking and writing in a literature-based EFL classroom. Bringing local folktales to a literature-based classroom will bring a 'comfortable' classroom atmosphere since the students have the background knowledge of the text. The local folktales and drama will stimulate the student's enthusiasm as they know the culture of the text. The use of literature-based instruction is very important to support the implementation of local literature in the speaking and writing classroom. Therefore the use of local folktales in a literature-based EFL classroom will help the students become better speakers and writers.

Tak ada siapapun yang bisa merubah kutukan itu selama berabad-abad. Seluruh manusia di negeri itu percaya, tak ada hukum selain empat pasal yang telah tercipta entah sejak kapan. Begini bunyi pasal-pasal itu. Pasal satu: laki-laki selalu benar. Pasal dua: perempuan harus melakukan perintah laki-laki. Pasal tiga: pembangkang aturan akan dihukum mati tanpa pembelaan. Pasal empat: bila laki-laki melakukan kesalahan, peraturan kembali ke pasal satu. Begitu banyak hal yang tak boleh dilakukan perempuan. Menaiki sepeda, adalah sebuah cita-cita yang nyaris mustahil bisa diwujudkan oleh seorang perempuan. Demikianlah negeri itu beranjak dari waktu ke waktu tanpa sebuah perubahan berarti. Hingga tibalah pada suatu masa ketika seorang pelacur, untuk pertama kalinya, berani menendang seorang laki-laki. Sungguh, perempuan-perempuan lain menjadi terinspirasi oleh keberanian pelacur itu. Hasilnya adalah terdapat perbedaan signifikan antara prestasi mahasiswa yang diajar dengan model pembelajaran drama berbasis karakter dan lokalitas dengan prestasi mahasiswa yang tidak mendapat perlakuan.
