Two were 254 mm ID and 6 m tall, the third wus 800 mm ID and 3 m tall. Absorption was also studied in two packed columns of 800 mm ID, 7 and 10 rn tall, operated in series. Solutions of mixed nitric and sulfuric acids were used as absorbents. Specific rates of absorption were measured using a stirred cell with a flat interface. A mathematical model is developed for an adiabatic operation. The gas phase reactions and equilibria, gas phase mass transfer, interface equilibria, and liquid phase reactions are included in the model. Heterogeneous gas-liquid equilibria are included in the model for the first time. The variation in the rates of absorption with chemical reaction (of NO,, N203, and N204) with respect to acid concentration is considered. The formation of nitric acid in the gas phase is also considered in the model. Favorable agreement is shown between the model predictions and the experimental observations.

Metrics and analysis methods are routinely selected to satisfy requirements of software process improvement frameworks such as CMMI. Considerable time and effort is spent in collecting metrics and analyzing them without realizing the benefits of the measurement and analysis effort. This may be attributed to inadequate understanding of the link between the selected metrics and the underlying processes. The inappropriate selection of analysis method may also be due to lack of understanding about the desired monitoring and control actions. This paper discusses the benefits of choosing appropriate metrics and analysis method based on observations in several organizations. It also discusses the pitfalls of choosing wrong metrics.
Determination of the coordination number of liquid metals near the melting point
Metallurgical Transactions A, 1985

This plot was based on regular crystal structures (fcc, bcc, simple cubic, and diamond cubic) in the solid state. The graphical correlation was used to predict the coordination numbers for liquid metals near the melting point. The coordination numbers of 39 liquid metals were predicted by using Pauling’s univalent ionic radius, the liquid density, and the nearest neighbor separation distance.

Acritical review has been presented for the various reactive solvents recommended for the absorption of NO. A mathematical model has been developed for sizing of packed columns and bubble columns for the absorption of NO. The dimensions of the equipment have been found for 10 reactive solvents and over a wide range of liquid and gas velocities. Several liquid absorbents, namely FeS04/H2S04, Fe(ll)EDTA, KMnO,/NaOH, and urea have been considered. A procedure has been developed forthe selection of the most economic system for the absorption of NO. Economic analysis was done for the various systems based on fixed and variable costs, materials of construction and additional cost for the regeneration of chemicals and recovery of NO gas.
