Air quality has assessed in terms of several indicators: carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, PM10, PM2.5, ozone, and volatile organic compounds. AERMOD model was used to predict the concentrations of pollutants in the surrounding area. Results obtained revealed that the concentration of all impurities is within the standard limits for ambient air quality. In comparison with OSHA guidelines, only PM10 concentration exceeded the allowable limit. The higher concentrations of pollutants are recorded at the site closest to the plant site (S1, a housing compound located 0.8km ESE from the plant). Concentrations at the other monitoring sites decreased significantly. Except for PM10, the calculated hazard quotient (HQ) of all pollutants was <1which indicated no health effects are expected. This solar energy is used to heat water that passes through galvanized pipes at the bottom of the sand drying beds. Sludge that is applied to beds will become heated. This will enhance evaporation, accelerate dewatering of sludge and help in the reduction of pathogenic levels. An experimental study was conducted at Central Irbed Wastewater Treatment Plant (CIWWTP) in Jordan. The study expands over 18 months where samples of sludge were taken regularly during this period from both modified and non-modified sand beds. Analysis were carried out for different physical, chemical and biological quality parameters of applied and treated sludge. Obtained results indicated that the water content of samples decreased from 96.5 % to 32.94 % within 18 days when conventional sand drying beds were used. For this reason, it is very important to evaluate the quality of rainwater collect ored in these cisterns and storage tanks. In the present work, a comprehensive survey was carried out to cover four Ninet analy biolo for do catch drink y of cister ed and st governorates in northern region of Jordan, where rainwater collection for domestic use is practiced on regular basis. y samples of harvested rain water from various storage tanks within these four governorates were collected and zed for different quality parameters (pH, alkalinity, Hardness, Turbidity, TDS, COD, NO 3 , NH 4 , PO 4 , Pb, Fe, Cr and gical contaminations). The results of the analysis were compared with valid quality guidelines to evaluate its suitability mestic uses. The resulted data indicate that water quality in these tanks and cisterns varies depending on location, on ment area, and on the availability of public sanitary systems. It was concluded that collected rainwater is unsuitable for ing purpose while it could be used for irrigation within in houses.

ABSTRACT Adsorption of SO2 onto Jordanian zeolitic tuff (ZT) was examined in this work. ZT sample... more ABSTRACT Adsorption of SO2 onto Jordanian zeolitic tuff (ZT) was examined in this work. ZT samples were characterized by XRD, XRF, BET and TGA analyses. The sorption process was carried out in a fixed bed column at different operating conditions. The unique measuring technique, namely UIC sulfur coulometer, for SO2 measurement was adopted in this work. Uptake of SO2 by ZT was found to increase with increasing temperature up to a temperature of 200 °C and then decrease at higher temperatures. It was also found that drying of ZT, by conventional and microwave heating has a considerable effect on SO2 uptake and breakthrough time. Experimental data for adsorption isotherms were obtained and found to follow the BET isotherm model. It was found that the adsorption process is exothermic in nature. Thermal pre-treatment was found to affect the adsorption capacity and breakthrough time of ZT. The maximum adsorption capacity was obtained after thermal pretreatment of ZT at a temperature of 200 °C, which could be linked to the effect of heating on the destruction of crystal structure of phillipsite, the crystal refinement of chabazite, and the formation of new aluminosilicate crystalline phases. ZT can be regenerated and the initial adsorption capacity was preserved after three regeneration cycles.

Five mortar mixes were prepared by replacing normal aggregate (standard sand) with volcanic tuff aggregate in ratios of 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% (M1 to M5, respectively). Compressive strength, flexural strength, and unit weight were tested at mortar ages of 3, 7, 28, and 56 days. The results revealed improved compressive and flexural strength, which were maximal for the M3 sample. Unit weight decreased as the ratio of volcanic tuff increased. Based on these results, adding Jordanian volcanic tuff in the appropriate ratio will improve these mortar characteristics.

A finite-difference scheme was used to solve the system of transformed governing equations. Numerical results for the details of the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles which are shown on graphs have been presented. It is shown that the inertia forces have a significant influence on the flow characteristics in this problem. Comparison with previous published work is performed and the results are found to be in excellent agreement.

Performance of waste water treatment plants in Jordan and suitability for reuse

There is an increasing trend to require more efficient use of water resources, both in urban and ... more There is an increasing trend to require more efficient use of water resources, both in urban and rural environments. In Jordan, the increase in water demand, in addition to water shortage has led to growing interest in wastewater reuse. In this work, characteristics of wastewater for four wastewater treatment plants were determined. Characterization of wastewater was evaluated in terms of measuring BOD, COD, TSS, TDS, NH 4 , and DO for the influent and the effluent wastewater from the selected plants. The quality of the treated wastewater was compared with Jordanian standards. Results indicate that municipal wastewater in Jordan contains high concentrations of pollutants such as BOD, COD, TSS, and NH 4 ; therefore it is classified as a strong waste. The performance of the four treatment plants was evaluated. Conventional and modified activated sludge show good performance, while low water quality is produced by stabilization ponds. The effluent from activated sludge treatment plants complies with Jordanian standards for restricted use. Before reuse, effluent wastewater needs advanced treatment to prevent its impact on human health and the environment.

Stone cutting wastes in the form of sludge is taken from Samara Factory and incorporated in the batch formulations of terrazzo tiles. The physio-chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the sludge were carried out in order to identify the major components. Result indicated that the sludge generated from stone cutting process could be used in producing of terrazzo tiles. Mixtures of aggregates with added amount of sludge were used successfully to produce the tiles. The results indicated that the transverse strength, water absorption and tiles measurements, for all the taken samples, are comply with Jordanian Standards. The transverse strength decreased as the ratio of the added sludge increased while water absorption increased as the sludge ratio increased

Physical and chemical characteristics of slurry were determined. The effects of replacements were investigated by measuring identifiable concrete and mortar parameters, such as workability, compressive, tensile, and flexural strength for concrete, and compressive, flexural strength and expansion due to alkali aggregate reactions for mortar. The results showed an improvement of all concrete and mortar characteristics: concrete compressive strength had increased by 21 %, flexural strength by 18 %, mortar compressive strength by 11 %, and flexural strength by 11.7 %. Slump values of concrete were reduced by 58 %. Such results emphasized the feasibility of reusing slurry sludge in concrete and mortar production.

The main goal of this study is to determine the trend in exhaust concentrations during the last 1... more The main goal of this study is to determine the trend in exhaust concentrations during the last 12 years. Accordingly, a nondisperse infrared gas analyzer was used to measure the concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) emitted from vehicle exhaust. A total of 449 vehicles distributed across model years ranging between 1968 and 2005 were tested under idling conditions. The results indicated that there is a strong relationship between the age of the vehicle and the concentration of exhaust emissions. Moreover, there has been a significant reduction in exhaust emissions over the last 12 years with decrease in the average concentrations of CO and HC of 25% and 28%, respectively. Therefore, it is recommended removing the customs fees for the new vehicles and maintenance spare parts, which will encourage the purchase of new vehicles and participation in maintenance programs, with further decreases in exhaust emissions.

This study aimed to determine the cement industry's impact on ambient air quality inside and ... more This study aimed to determine the cement industry's impact on ambient air quality inside and around a Saudi Arabian cement plant. Air quality has assessed in terms of several indicators: carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, PM10, PM2.5, ozone, and volatile organic compounds. AERMOD model was used to predict the concentrations of pollutants in the surrounding area. Results obtained revealed that the concentration of all impurities is within the standard limits for ambient air quality. In comparison with OSHA guidelines, only PM10 concentration exceeded the allowable limit. The higher concentrations of pollutants are recorded at the site closest to the plant site (S1, a housing compound located 0.8km ESE from the plant). Concentrations at the other monitoring sites decreased significantly. Except for PM10, the calculated hazard quotient (HQ) of all pollutants was <1which indicated no health effects are expected. An analysis is performed for non-Darcy free convection flow over a vertical plate embedded in a t... more An analysis is performed for non-Darcy free convection flow over a vertical plate embedded in a thermally stratified, fluid saturated porous medium and taking into account the presence of thermophoresis particle deposition. A finite-difference scheme was used to solve the system of transformed governing equations. Numerical results for the details of the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles which are shown on graphs have been presented. It is shown that the inertia forces have a significant influence on the flow characteristics in this problem. Comparison with previous published work is performed and the results are found to be in excellent agreement.

There is an increasing trend to require more efficient use of water resources, both in urban and ... more There is an increasing trend to require more efficient use of water resources, both in urban and rural environments. In Jordan, the increase in water demand, in addition to water shortage has led to growing interest in wastewater reuse. In this work, characteristics of wastewater for four wastewater treatment plants were determined. Characterization of wastewater was evaluated in terms of measuring BOD, COD, TSS, TDS, NH 4 , and DO for the influent and the effluent wastewater from the selected plants. The quality of the treated wastewater was compared with Jordanian standards. Results indicate that municipal wastewater in Jordan contains high concentrations of pollutants such as BOD, COD, TSS, and NH 4 ; therefore it is classified as a strong waste. The performance of the four treatment plants was evaluated. Conventional and modified activated sludge show good performance, while low water quality is produced by stabilization ponds. The effluent from activated sludge treatment plants complies with Jordanian standards for restricted use. Before reuse, effluent wastewater needs advanced treatment to prevent its impact on human health and the environment.

Stone cutting wastes in the form of sludge is taken from Samara Factory and incorporated in the batch formulations of terrazzo tiles. The physio-chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the sludge were carried out in order to identify the major components. Result indicated that the sludge generated from stone cutting process could be used in producing of terrazzo tiles. Mixtures of aggregates with added amount of sludge were used successfully to produce the tiles. The results indicated that the transverse strength, water absorption and tiles measurements, for all the taken samples, are comply with Jordanian Standards. The transverse strength decreased as the ratio of the added sludge increased while water absorption increased as the sludge ratio increased

Physical and chemical characteristics of slurry were determined. The effects of replacements were investigated by measuring identifiable concrete and mortar parameters, such as workability, compressive, tensile, and flexural strength for concrete, and compressive, flexural strength and expansion due to alkali aggregate reactions for mortar. The results showed an improvement of all concrete and mortar characteristics: concrete compressive strength had increased by 21 %, flexural strength by 18 %, mortar compressive strength by 11 %, and flexural strength by 11.7 %. Slump values of concrete were reduced by 58 %. Such results emphasized the feasibility of reusing slurry sludge in concrete and mortar production.

The main goal of this study is to determine the trend in exhaust concentrations during the last 1... more The main goal of this study is to determine the trend in exhaust concentrations during the last 12 years. Accordingly, a nondisperse infrared gas analyzer was used to measure the concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) emitted from vehicle exhaust. A total of 449 vehicles distributed across model years ranging between 1968 and 2005 were tested under idling conditions. The results indicated that there is a strong relationship between the age of the vehicle and the concentration of exhaust emissions. Moreover, there has been a significant reduction in exhaust emissions over the last 12 years with decrease in the average concentrations of CO and HC of 25% and 28%, respectively. Therefore, it is recommended removing the customs fees for the new vehicles and maintenance spare parts, which will encourage the purchase of new vehicles and participation in maintenance programs, with further decreases in exhaust emissions.
