Although the scarcity of accurate and accessible data on international migration flows typically ... more Although the scarcity of accurate and accessible data on international migration flows typically prevents a full understanding of migratory patterns, this might not be the case for Latin America, where high-quality census data on migrant flows is publicly available through the project International Migration in Latina America (IMILA). However, such data has mostly been used for research at the regional level because of the fragmented nature of their availability and the lack of English documentation. To tackle this issue, we consolidated data from the IMILA collection to provide a harmonized dataset with five-year flows by country of birth, sex, and age group, for 19 countries of destination and five census waves. Moreover, comparing IMILA to other two available data sources on flows to Latin America, we showed that IMILA provides a more accurate assessment of migration flows from North America and Europe, enables a better quantification of minor migration flows, and enhances the visibility of female migration. In this extreme context, there was a growing need to understand how the pandemic impacted migrant and refugee populations, as well as the long-lasting effects of measures implemented to mitigate its effects. With many migrants facing exacerbated conditions of vulnerability and with new working modalities affecting all members of society, especially those who were key respondents to protect migrants in the first year of the pandemic, key ethical questions emerged about how, when and where, should research be conducted. RESUMEN Además de los movimientos migratorios internos propios a cada período, estas corrientes, ... more RESUMEN Además de los movimientos migratorios internos propios a cada período, estas corrientes, en muchos casos, han trascendiendo las fronteras nacionales; la migración regional tuvo un peso mayoritario en muchos períodos. La migración internacional de larga distancia ha tenido efectos importantes en el crecimiento de la población, a lo largo del siglo XIX y primeras décadas del XX, cuando corrientes de inmigrantes europeos se integraron al territorio uruguayo. A partir de 1960 la situación se revertió, con la emigración hacia Estados Unidos, Canadá, Australia y algunos países europeos. Estas corrientes crecieron paulatinamente y pasaron a ser predominantes en la última década del siglo pasado. La migración ocupa un lugar importante en el imaginario de la sociedad uruguaya. En este proyecto nos proponemos indagar sobre la propensión migratoria entre los jóvenes de este país.

El presente trabajo analiza el efecto de la concentración de inmigrantes del barrio de residencia... more El presente trabajo analiza el efecto de la concentración de inmigrantes del barrio de residencia entre los inmigrantes recientes (llegados entre 2005 y 2011) nacidos en Perú, Paraguay y Chile en Montevideo sobre la probabilidad de estar ocupados. Las características sociales y económicas de la zona de asentamiento repercuten en el tipo de integración: los inmigrantes con menor capital social y económico tienden a asentarse en los barrios más pobres y aquellos con mayor capital social y económico en barrios más ricos. Sin embargo, ninguna de las dos situaciones implica un efecto positivo o negativo per se en la integración económica dado que una mayor concentración de población inmigrante puede proveer de mayores redes que faciliten la inserción laboral en el país de destino en los primeros años de asentamiento.
