Pregnancy develops hypervolemic state due to increased splachnic blood flow, which contributes to increased portal pressure transmitted to collateral veins that increase the risk of variceal bleeding in these patients. We report the case of a 39 years old patient in the sixth pregnancy and without any previous medical history that presented pre-sinusoidal portal hypertension, and thanks to appropriate multidisciplinary management had an uncomplicated delivery. We review the literature relevant to the case.

The EGD revealed red-purple nodules in the gastric antrum. Histopathologically, there were spindle cells and capillary size vascular proliferation. These findings were consistent with Kaposi sarcoma of the stomach. Immediately after, the patient had a positive test for HIV.

Methods: Phase one: Retrospective survey of clinical records of patients with alcoholic hepatic cirrhosis due to chronic consumption of guarapo seen in La Samaritana University Hospital in Bogotá. Phase two: Collection of guarapo samples in the villages identified and chemical analysis by means of high performance gas chromatography. Results: All samples showed ethanol concentrations in the range of 0,50 % to 6,94%. In 41 of them acetaldehyde was present in variable concentrations. None of them were positive for methanol. The samples with the higher ethanol concentrations came from Gualivá, Rionegro and Tequendama, which are the provinces with the higher number of patients with alcoholic hepatic cirrhosis seen in La Samaritana University Hospital.

Treatment of Helicobacter pylori infections remains an unsolved problem in clinical practice beca... more Treatment of Helicobacter pylori infections remains an unsolved problem in clinical practice because of the high percentage of failures to eradicate the bacteria. The main cause is that antibiotic resistance varies with the geographical area under study. Several techniques have been developed to study the bacteria's sensitivity in vitro, but they are diffi cult to use in clinical practice, and they are costly. It is also important to recognize that sensitivity in vitro is not always directly related to sensitivity in vivo. Nevertheless, these techniques can help improve the results of eradication. This article reviews the mechanisms of resistance and reviews articles published in Latin America on in vitro resistance to the antibiotics most frequently used in eradication schemes. The review found 35 studies in Latin America with a total of 3,358 isolates. Forty-eight percent of the studies used the E-test for sensitivity, 37% used agar dilution, and 8% used agar diffusion. The studies show considerable heterogeneity with important differences among countries in the region and even among studies in the same country. In vitro resistance to metronidazole was 65.7%, in vitro resistance to amoxicillin was 6.5 in vitro resistance to clarithromycin was 14%, in vitro resistance to tetracycline was 8.3% to, in vitro resistance to levofl oxacin was 39% and in vitro resistance to furazolidone was 6.9%.
