I am the author of Adult Life: Developmental Processes which was the first text in the field of psychology on adult development. I am currently editing the International Handbook of Adult Development and Wisdom for Oxford University Press. I live in Santa Barbara with my husband, Larry, and I dote on 4 grandchildren.

This study attempts to understand individual emotional experience in the context of group develop... more This study attempts to understand individual emotional experience in the context of group development. It emphasizes the first level of abstraction of group member experience rather than individual experience over time through second-order interpretations. Data were gathered from mixed groups of 21 students, over 9 weeks, in a group process course at a large state university. Students had no prior group process training and kept weekly journals for credit. Content analysis was performed on the journals, meaning units were coded for theme, and frequencies of themes describing affective and traditional group process responses were tallied. The data clearly supported the paradoxical descriptions of group life, especially conflict, offered by Smith and Berg (1988). The data may also represent what the move toward relativistic (Sinnott, 1984) or dialectical (Riegel, 1975, 1977) thinking may look like at the individual level.

Some generalization and follow-up measures on autistic children in behavior therapy1

Reported was a behavior therapy program emphasizing language training for 20 autistic children wh... more Reported was a behavior therapy program emphasizing language training for 20 autistic children who variously exhibited apparent sensory deficit, severe affect isolation, self stimulatory behavior, mutism, echolalic speech, absence of receptive speech and social and self help behaviors, and self destructive tendencies. The treatment emphasized extinction of pathological behaviors through reinforcement withdrawal, aversive stimuli, or reinforcement of incompatible behavior, and language training. Measures of change included multiple response recordings of self stimulation, echolalic speech, appropriate speech, social nonverbal behavior, and appropriate play, along with Stanford Binet Intelligence Test and Vineland Social Maturity Test Scores. Results were given as group averages followed by extensive discussions of changes in individual groups and children. Findings were summarized as follows: pathological behaviors (echolalia, self stimulation). decreased while desired behaviors (appropriate speech, play, social nonverbal behavior) increased; all children improved, some more than others; followup measures 2 years after treatment showed large differences depending upon the posttreatment environment; and reinstatement of therapy reestablished original therapeutic gains in the institutionalized children. Contingent reinforcement and imitative prompts were used to teach an autistic child to use simple... more Contingent reinforcement and imitative prompts were used to teach an autistic child to use simple and compound sentences to describe a set of standard pictures. When imitative prompts and reinforcement were discontinued, correct use of simple sentences declined, but increased again when imitative prompts and reinforcement were reinstated. When imitative prompts and reinforcements were used to teach compound sentence structure, correct use of simple sentences declined and correct use of compound structure increased. At the end of training, the child also used novel compound sentences to describe a set of pictures on which he had received no direct training. 473 1974,71,473-479 NUMBER 3 (FALL 1974)

Eighteen boys and 18 girls aged 4-6 years viewed one of three videotapes in which fantasy charact... more Eighteen boys and 18 girls aged 4-6 years viewed one of three videotapes in which fantasy characters used culturally stereotyped arguments to assign masculinity, femininity, or sex-role neutrality to a standard set of sex-neutral toys. After viewing the videotape, subjects were observed for 10 minutes in free play with the test toys and with a less attractive set of comparison toys which were not shown. The videotaped portrayal of sex appropriateness significantly affected toy choice. Children of both sexes spent more time playing with the test toys when they were identified as sex appropriate than with the comparison toys. When the test toys were identified as inappropriate for their sex, however, children spent more time playing with the less desirable comparison toys. The implications of these findings were discussed in light of media protrayal of male and female models.
