The behavior of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation (THC) is essential to a better understandin... more The behavior of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation (THC) is essential to a better understanding of climate change. Paleoclimatic studies suggest that this circulation has experimented repeated changes throughout the history of the Earth associated to climate changes [1]. The coupled 3-dimensional climate models are useful in quantitatively assessing the details of the thermohaline circulation and for comparison with observations. However, the currently available computing capacity reduces the possibility of carry out exhaustive parametric studies of the THC. Models of reduced complexity can help overcome this difficulty and make valuable contributions to a better understanding of parameter space. Moreover, these models are most useful as exploratory tools for hypothesis building. To carry out an efficient and effective exploitation of a slate mine, it is necessary to have det... more To carry out an efficient and effective exploitation of a slate mine, it is necessary to have detailed information about the production potential of the site. To assist us in estimating the quality of slate from a small set of drilling data within an unexploited portion of the mine, the following estimation techniques were applied: kriging, regularization networks (RN), multilayer perceptron (MLP) networks, and radial basis function (RBF) networks. Our numerical results for the test holes show that the best results were obtained using an RN (kriging) which takes into account the known anisotropy. Differing deposit configurations were obtained, depending on the method applied. Variations in the form of pockets were obtained when using a radial pattern with RBF, RN, and kriging models while a stratified pattern was obtained with the MLP model. Pockets are more suitable for a slate mine, which indicates that the selection of a technique should take account of the specific configuration of the deposit according to mineral type.

The aim of the work described herein was to study projection scenarios in order to find changes i... more The aim of the work described herein was to study projection scenarios in order to find changes in the synoptic variability of the northwest Iberian Peninsula in the 21st century. To this end, we investigated the changes in the frequency of the different circulation types computed for the study area using three different models used in the IPCC 4 th assessment report. The circulation types were computed using the procedure known as Lamb circulation types. The control simulation for the late 20th century was evaluated objectively from the results obtained using data from the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis, as to evaluate the ability of the model to reproduce the present climate. We have compared not only seasonal mean sea level pressure fields but also the mean seasonal frequency of circulation types. The results for the end of the 21st century show a decrease in the frequency of cyclonic, W, and SW circulation types in the spring and summer months. This trend also appears in the autumn, with a concomitant increase in the anticyclonic types.
