The approach of computer music has proven to be successful within several groups of students at La Universidad de Los Andes in Bogota, between 1992 and 1997. Given that music education at an early age, and at high school levels is neither mandatory nor offered in many schools, makes it difficult to develop a high standard of musical culture in the country. Our belief is that this missing gap can be filled by learning about music from and electroacoustic point of view, and by using computer music techniques. BACKGROUND Electroacoustic music in Colombia has been active since the 1960s, and has been used by major composers ever since. The mixed and live electronics performance side has been limited somehow. Computer music has been on the minds of some engineers, and comp...

We undertook this study to identify risk factors (RF) for bacteremia in children with cancer, neutropenia and fever (CNF) in order to establish more timely diagnoses. Methods. We conducted a cross-sectional study in regard to RF for bacteremia in pediatric patients with CNF. We compared the prevalence of bacteremia depending on the presence or absence of independent variables and calculated the prevalence ratio (PR) with 95% confi dence intervals. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify conditions that increase the likelihood of the diagnosis of bacteremia. Results. We included 149 patients with CNF. Average age was 7.3 years; 45% were females. The underlying disease was leukemia (n = 113) or solid tumors (n = 36). Of the patients, 25.5% suffered from bacteremia; 65% of isolated bacteria were gram-negative. Variables associated with bacteremia identifi ed by multivariate analysis were thrombocytopenia (OR 2.3, 95% CI 1.02-5.4, p 0.04), central venous catheter (CVC) (OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.16-5.9, p 0.02) and history of chemotherapy with vincristine (OR 2.8, 95% CI 1.22-6.4, p 0.01). Conclusions. In a multivariate model, platelet count ≤50,000/mm 3 , CVC and the use of vincristine were associated with an increased likelihood of diagnosis of bacteremia in children with CNF.

Continuity is critical for safe patient care and its absence is associated with adverse outcomes.... more Continuity is critical for safe patient care and its absence is associated with adverse outcomes. Continuity requires handoffs between physicians, but most published studies of educational interventions to improve handoffs have focused primarily on residents, despite interns expected to being proficient. The AAMC core entrustable activities for graduating medical students includes handoffs as a milestone, but no controlled studies with students have assessed the impact of training in handoff skills. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of an educational intervention to improve third-year medical student handoff skills, the durability of learned skills into the fourth year, and the transfer of skills from the simulated setting to the clinical environment. Trained evaluators used standardized patient cases and an observation tool to assess verbal handoff skills immediately post intervention and during the student's fourth-year acting internship. Students were also ob...

The extrapolation of the QCD results from the accessible heavy-light meson masses to the B-meson mass is constrained by the static result. The matching of the corresponding results in HQET and in QCD is for the first time made at NLO accuracy in the MS(NDR) renormalization scheme. All results are obtained in the quenched approximation.

A Rare Complication of Cytomegalovirus Infection

A 35-yearold human immunodeficiency virus–infected woman receiving antiretroviral therapy for 7 weeks and ganciclovir for 3 months for CMV retinitis presented with a 1-week history of varied neurologic complaints. Since initiating the antiretroviral therapy, she had more than a 4-fold increase in CD4 count and a 1-log reduction in human immunodeficiency virus viral load. Magnetic resonance imaging showed enhancement of the ventricles and leptomeninges. Cytomegalovirus DNA polymerase chain reaction confirmed the presence of CMV in the cerebrospinal fluid, consistent with a diagnosis of CMV meningoventriculoencephalitis IRIS. Extraocular CMV–associated central nervous system IRIS is exceedingly rare and its clinical presentation seems variable. This report demonstrates successful management with the addition of corticosteroids to anti-CMV therapy with prompt neurological improvement.

This improves previous results, see [28] and [18], removing several constrains on the a priori regularity of the potential. The improvement is based on the study of the smoothing properties of the quartic term in the Neumann-Born expansion of the scattering amplitude in 3D, together with a Leibniz formula for multiple scattering valid in any dimension.

In this paper, four balanced accuracy-complexity identification model families are proposed. These models are derived, by selecting different combinations of activation functions in a dedicated neural network design presented in our previous work

As a first step, a single layer filter design is made, based on open-circuited different-length stubs DBR structures. A two layer filter is obtained by modifying the initial design, allowing cross-couplings between non-adjacent resonators. The multilayer configuration reduces the circuit size, and

Although tau nitration is believed to influence the pathogenesis of these diseases, the precise residues modified, and the resulting effects on tau function, remain enigmatic. Previously, we demonstrated that nitration at residue Tyr29 markedly inhibits the ability of tau to self-associate and stabilize the microtubule lattice (Reynolds et al., 2005b, 2006). Here, we report the first monoclonal antibody to detect nitration in a protein-specific and site-selective manner. This reagent, termed Tau-nY29, recognizes tau only when nitrated at residue Tyr29. It does not cross-react with wild-type tau, tau mutants singly nitrated at Tyr18, Tyr197, and Tyr394, or other proteins known to be nitrated in neurodegenerative diseases. By Western blot analysis, Tau-nY29 detects soluble tau and paired helical filament tau from severely af...

This paper studies the weighted norm convergence of the Fourier series expansion associated to this system. We establish conditions on the weights, in terms of the A p classes of Muckenhoupt, which ensure the convergence. Necessary conditions are also proved, which for a wide class of weights coincide with the sufficient conditions.

Neurofibrillary tangles, composed of insoluble aggregates of the microtubule-associated protein T... more Neurofibrillary tangles, composed of insoluble aggregates of the microtubule-associated protein Tau, are a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer disease (AD) and other tauopathies. However, recent evidence indicates that neuronal dysfunction precedes the formation of these insoluble fibrillar deposits, suggesting that earlier prefibrillar Tau aggregates may be neurotoxic. To determine the composition of these aggregates, we have employed a photochemical cross-linking technique to examine intermolecular interactions of full-length Tau in vitro. Using this method, we demonstrate that dimerization is an early event in the Tau aggregation process and that these dimers selfassociate to form larger oligomeric aggregates. Moreover, using these stabilized Tau aggregates as immunogens, we generated a monoclonal antibody that selectively recognizes Tau dimers and higher order oligomeric aggregates but shows little reactivity to Tau filaments in vitro. Immunostaining indicates that these dimers/oligomers are markedly elevated in AD, appearing in early pathological inclusions such as neuropil threads and pretangle neurons as well as colocalizing with other early markers of Tau pathogenesis. Taken as a whole, the work presented herein demonstrates the existence of alternative Tau aggregates that precede formation of fibrillar Tau pathologies and raises the possibility that these hierarchical oligomeric forms of Tau may contribute to neurodegeneration.

Evaluation of three-dimensional modal pushover analysis for unsymmetric-plan buildings subjected to two components of ground motion

Eight low-and medium-rise structures were considered. Four intended to represent older buildings were designed according to the 1985 Uniform Building Code, whereas four other designs intended to represent newer buildings were based on the 2006 International Building Code. The median seismic demands for these buildings to 39 two-component ground motions, scaled to two intensity levels, were computed by MPA and nonlinear response history analysis (RHA), and then compared. Even for these ground motions that deform the buildings significantly into the inelastic range, MPA offers sufficient degree of accuracy. It is demonstrated that PMPA, a variant of the MPA procedure, for nonlinear systems is almost as accurate as the well-known standard response spectrum analysis procedure is for linear systems. Thus, for practical applications, the PMPA procedure offers an attractive alternative to nonlinear RHA, whereby seismic demands can be estimated directly from the (elastic) design spectrum. In contrast, the nonlinear static procedure specified in the ASCE/SEI 41-06 Standard is demonstrated to grossly underestimate seismic demands for some of the unsymmetric-plan buildings considered.
