Joshua Winicki
I received my Ph.D. in economics from the University of Oregon with an emphasis on applied microeconomics and public policy. I spent four years in the DC area conducting policy research at USDA and American Institutes for Reserch, as well as teaching several economics courses at American University.
My research takes advantage of natural experiments to tease out program effects, primarily in the field of education. A consistent theme looks at "unintended consequences" of a program. Using the dramatic change in the supply of athletic scholarships from Title IX, I examined how this affected student performance. In a paper coauthored with David Figlio, we examined the effect of state-mandated testing had on nutritional content of school meals, finding calorie content rising significantly in schools at-risk of being labeled a "failing" school.
After conducting policy research, I pursued secondary teaching in Oregon, teaching math in a middle school. I grew up in Boulder, Colorado, where I competed in gymnastics.
