The art of natural dyeing dates back to the neolithicNeolithic period, which continued till the o... more The art of natural dyeing dates back to the neolithicNeolithic period, which continued till the onslaught by synthetic colourscolors due to the presumed advantage of reduced costs, durability, brightness etc. Since, natural dyed textiles besides being less polutative, have an appeal to an eye, are soothing to human body and are said to have important functional properties such as antimicrobial, antiseptic etc. .Theye, hence have made a comeback, though as a luxury. Apart from these advantages, Uuse of natural dyes also creates income generating opportunities, to people, specifically for those communities, which reside in far flungrom rural areas like Himalayan region through need of manpower for who are engaged in growing, procurement, processing, distribution, and application besides replenishing the forest, necessary to harbor natural dyes. This is evident that Natural dyeing can be economically viable and sustainable alternative that the textile sector can use to dye material with, to produce colored textiles with properties similar to or better than textiles dyed with synthetic colors. The paper reviews traditional practices of Natural Dyeing adopted by inhabitants of the Indian Himalayas and derives from the best practices viable in the present context forin pursuit of getting insights to further develop sustainable and economically viable micro ecosystems sustainability of the local populace. Successful interventions have also been explored to suggest models for the revival and promotion of Natural Dyeing, which may be replicated for sustainability of respective micro ecosystems, both economic and social.
