While ecclesial leaders might be expected to seek the Lord together in prayer and fasting, academic leaders tend to turn toward assessment. As the academy well knows, assessment not only looks at an institution, but it also looks like the ones who do the assessment. Spirit Empowered Christianity in the 21st Century is an efffort by a relatively diverse group of Pentecostal/Charismatic/Renewalist scholars to assess the past and predict or guide the future of their movement, an efffort that yields an encouraging portrait of the present state of their scholarly community. The book, a collection of papers that were presented in April, 2010 at the Global Conference on Holy Spirit Empowerment in the Twenty-First Century at Oral Roberts University, was the culmination of conversations "on fijive diffferent continents in seventeen. .. events with participants from over fijifty nations" (p. viii). Nevertheless, the articles chosen for the book overwhelmingly came from scholars based in the United States of America, even though some attention is given to the global movement, and a few articles by scholars from outside the USA are featured. Despite the dominance of voices from the USA, the book offfers some valuable global insights. The introductory article by Vinson Synan, "The Charismatic Renewal After Fifty Years," offfers a masterful brief synopsis of the history of the Charismatic Renewal since 1959, ending with ten well-considered predictions for the future of a combined Renewal movement that now numbers in excess of 600 million adherents. Matteo Calisi's article on the Future of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal offfers an encouraging glimpse into the spiritual life of 150 million Catholic brothers and sisters around the world. Ayodeji Adewuya provides an impressive African voice in a remarkably well-balanced assessment of the efffects of the prosperity gospel in Africa, concluding "we must not shy away from the proclamation of prosperity if we understand that it is not synonymous with greed and materialism. The church needs to reflect in its conversation a [biblical and theologically sound] defijinition of prosperity (p. 415)." Such distinctive voices from abroad deserve more attention in the Pentecostal academy in the USA and in its publications. Luis Orellana contributes a chapter on the future of Pentecostalism in Latin America that represents an important Latino voice to engage with, debate, and profijit from. Nevertheless, more Latino/a voices should be heard if we are to understand and profijit from the powerful Spirit-fijilled Christianity that has been crossing the borderinto the USA for years in huge numbers and dramatically reshaping the cosmovisión of Pentecostalism in the USA. It would have been especially valuable to hear alternative views to Luis Orellana's claim that Pentecostal churches fraternally linked with foreign denominations (such as the "Assemblies of God Brazilian") "are characterized by their strong dependence on the bureaucratic apparatus in the United States of America" (p. 116). The many millions of members in the Brazilian Assemblies of God-organized in a church polity that bears little resemblance to its sister church in the USA and certainly takes no orders from it-may not agree that they are

A further note about definition is that I will use the word Pentecostal to refer to the whole Pentecostal/Charismatic community.
