This strategy provides different types of materials that include gels, side-chain and cross-linked polymers, or anisotropic networks where a functional response along with thermal and mechanical stability are required in a well-aligned medium. The key goal is to incorporate the active structure in an aligned liquid crystalline medium that is able to transform into a macroscopically aligned high-molecular weight material.

In this work we present the results and conclusions about Spanish CIPRECES project, where the purpose was to describe and to analyze the communication habits of secondary students, specifically in interaction situations mediated by technologies and also in technological environments. By mean of the questionnaire CoGERE,we have got different models of interaction among students and we have compared them to obtain some conclusions that we present in this paper

A side-chain liquid crystalline polyacrylate containing a salicylaldimine group has been synthesi... more A side-chain liquid crystalline polyacrylate containing a salicylaldimine group has been synthesized and complexed with copper(II) ions to generate metallomesogenic crosslinking of polymeric chains. The mesomorphic properties of the parent and complexed polymers have been studied by optical microscopy, DSC and X-ray diffraction. In addition, these materials have been investigated in depth by dielectric spectroscopy. Dielectric measurements of the parent polymer reveal the presence of two sub-glass relaxations (b and c). The a relaxation associated with the T g is masked by a conductive process, but at higher temperatures a d relaxation is observed. These relaxation processes have been characterized and their activation energies evaluated. The influence of the mesogenic order and metal crosslinking on some relaxation processes has also been determined.

We aimed to assess the association between the CD4:CD8 ratio and intima-media thickness (IMT) progression in treated HIV-infected patients as a marker of early atherosclerosis. A longitudinal study during three years was conducted in 120 HIV-infected patients receiving antiretroviral treatment (ART). We analyzed the associations between the CD4:CD8 ratio, cardiovascular risk factor and antiretroviral (ARV) treatment and progression of subclinical atherosclerosis assessed using carotid IMT at baseline and after three years. Finally, 96 patients completed the study. Maraviroc (MVC) is an antagonist of CCR5 receptor. CCR5 is the receptor of RANTES (Regulated on Activation, Normal T Cell Expressed and Secreted), a mediator of chronic inflammation and endothelial function. Our aim was to evaluate the maintenance of viral suppression and improvement of endothelial function in virologically suppressed HIV-infected patients switched to an NRTI-sparing combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) with MVC. This observational, non-interventional, multicenter study was performed at the Infectious Diseases Service of Santa Lucia, Morales Meseguer, Virgen de la Arrixaca and Reina Sofía University Hospital (Murcia, Spain). Twenty-one HIV-infected patients were selected after the treatment regimen was changed to Maraviroc 150 mg/once daily plus ritonavir-boosted PI therapy. Endothelial function was prospectively evaluated through flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) of the brachial artery at baseline and at weeks 24. We included 21 patients on treatment with PI in combination with 2 NRTI. The mean cART exposition was 133±68.9 months. Fourteen (66.6%) were males, aged 49±9 years, 15 (71.4%) smokers, 4 (19.04%) family history of coronary heart disease, 1 (5.76%) type 2 diabetes and 3 (14.28%) hypertensive, mean total cholesterol was 185.5±35 mg/dL, c-LDL 100.2±37 mg/dL, tryglicerides 170.42±92.03 mg/dL, cHDL 52.6±15.5 mg/dL, CD4 779,5±383.28 cells/mL, nadir CD4 187,96±96 cells/mL. After 24 weeks of follow-up of a switch to an NRTI-sparing regimen, 95.2% of HIV-patients on viral suppressive cART maintained viral suppression and CD4+ T cell count. This cART switch improve endothelial function in patients with lower baseline FMD levels after 24 weeks (baseline FMD -1.19±4.84 % to 24 weeks FMD 11.32±7.27%; p=0.002). The results of our study show that a switch to an NRTI-sparing bi-therapy with MVC improves endothelial function and maintained the immune-virologic efficacy. This regimen emphasizes the needs for further clinical studies to associate these achievements with the incidence of non-AIDS-defining illnesses.

X-ray diffraction, magnetization, and EPR experiments on samples with different thermal histories have been performed. In powdered samples, changes in magnetic properties are related to thermally induced structural modifications. A detailed study of a nematic melt-drawn fiber wm made. The fiber displayed a large nematic order parameter and a parallel alignment of the copper coordination planes with the stretching direction.

The mesogenic ability of triolefinic 15-membered azamacrocycles, appropriately functionalised wit... more The mesogenic ability of triolefinic 15-membered azamacrocycles, appropriately functionalised with arenesulfonamide groups, as well as their open precursors and palladium(0) complexes, has been explored. The double bonds increase the rigidity of the macrocycle and are also responsible for the coordination to the metal. These features, along with the substitution pattern of the aryl units, determine the mesomorphic behaviour of the compounds. For example, a smectic mesophase was observed for the macrocycle derived from 4-hexadecyloxybenzenesulfonamides. In contrast, columnar mesophases appear for derivatives that incorporate 3,4dialkoxybenzenesulfonamides. All of the mesophases were studied by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction, which enabled the determination of the structural parameters.

The derivatives of general formula [Ni(R ? 2 dtc)(o -Ph 2 PC 6 H 4 CH Ä/NR)][ClO 4 ] [R?0/ i Pr; R 0/Me (1), Et (2), i Pr (3), t Bu ; R?0/ i Bu; R0/Me (5), Et (6), i Pr , t Bu ] have been obtained by direct reaction between Ni(ClO 4 ) 2 , the bis(dithiocarbamate) precursors [Ni(R ? 2 dtc) 2 ] and the corresponding iminophosphine. Analogous reaction using [Ni(R?xan) 2 ] as starting materials allowed the preparation of complexes [Ni(R?xan)(o -Ph 2 PC 6 H 4 CH Ä/NR)][ClO 4 ] [R?0/Et; R0/Me , Et (10), i Pr (11), t Bu (12); R?0/ i Pr; R 0/Me (13), Et (14), i Pr (15), t Bu ]. The new complexes have been characterized by partial elemental analyses, conductivity measurements and spectroscopic methods (IR, 1 H and 31 P{ 1 H} NMR). The X-ray structures of complexes (1), (5) and (13) are reported, revealing that the iminophosphine acts as chelating ligand with coordination around the nickel atom distorted from the square-planar geometry. #

To determine the tick species that bite humans in the province of Soria (Spain) and ascertain the... more To determine the tick species that bite humans in the province of Soria (Spain) and ascertain the tick-borne pathogens that threaten people's health in that province, 185 tick specimens were collected from 179 patients who sought medical advice at health-care centres. The ticks were identified, and their DNA examined by PCR for pathogens. Most ticks were collected in autumn and spring (59 and 57 respectively). Nine species of ticks were identified, the most frequent being Dermacentor marginatus (55 . 7%), Ixodes ricinus (12 . 4 %) and Rhipicephalus bursa (11 . 9%). Ninety-seven females, 66 males, 21 nymphs and one larva were identified. Twenty-six ticks carried DNA from Rickettsia spp. (11 Rickettsia slovaca, 6 Rickettsia spp. RpA4/DnS14, 1 Rickettsia massiliae/Bar29, and 8 unidentified); two ticks carried DNA from Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and seven ticks harboured DNA from Anaplasma phagocytophilum.

The self-assembly of polycatenar molecules derived from 1,6-diphenyl-3,4-dipropyl-3-hexen-1,5-diy... more The self-assembly of polycatenar molecules derived from 1,6-diphenyl-3,4-dipropyl-3-hexen-1,5-diyne has been studied in detail by solution NMR spectroscopy. The analysis of the concentration- and temperature-dependent evolution of the chemical shifts and the diffusion coefficients in [D12]cyclohexane agrees well with an isodesmic model of association in this solvent. The association constants for the stacking and entropy and enthalpy of the process have been obtained. The driving force for the aggregation process is provided by a negative enthalpy (ΔH), which is partially compensated by a negative entropy (ΔS). A structural study of the self-assembly in solution has been carried out with the help of NOESY NMR spectroscopic experiments.

ABSTRACT The synthesis and in situ photopolymerization of reactive liquid crystals for the prepar... more ABSTRACT The synthesis and in situ photopolymerization of reactive liquid crystals for the preparation of materials with different degrees of cross-linking is described. The molecular orientation of polymeric films can be controlled by orienting the monomeric photopolymerizable materials in the mesomorphic state. The birefringence of photopolymerizable materials and the resulting polymers are described, and its dependence on the temperature has been evaluated. The degree of order of polymeric films has been studied by using a reactive nitrostilbene unit as a probe for performing dichroism measurements. Polymeric films with a low degree of cross-linking showed a memory effect, as observed by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and birefringence measurements.
