Microorganisms can produce renewable energy without damaging the environment or disrupting food supply. Microbial fuel cells offer the possibility of efficiently converting organic compounds into electricity. Microorganisms that can completely oxidize organic compounds with an electrode serving as the sole electron acceptor are the primary contributors to power production. Several mechanisms for electron transfer to anodes have been proposed including: direct electron transfer via outer-surface c-type cytochromes, long-range electron transfer via microbial nanowires, electron flow through a conductive biofilm matrix containing cytochromes, and soluble electron shuttles. Research in this area is focusing on elucidating the mechanisms of electron transfer between the microorganisms and the electrode in order to design better electrodes or genetically engineer better microbes for higher rates of electricity production. In this review we are examining the advances of the bioelectricity generation and the technological challenges that there are to face in order to turn it into a competitive renewable energy source.

En la biosfera la materia es limitada de manera que su reciclaje es un punto clave en el mantenimiento de la vida en la Tierra; de otro modo, los nutrientes se agotarían y la vida desaparecería.
