User Perceived Service Quality of mHealth Services in Developing Countries

Health challenges present arguably the most significant barrier to sustainable global development... more Health challenges present arguably the most significant barrier to sustainable global development. The introduction of ICT in healthcare, especially the application of mobile communications, has created the potential to transform healthcare delivery by making it more accessible, affordable and effective across the developing world. However, there is growing concerns about the quality of such services with regard to the robustness of the service delivery platform, knowledge and competence of the provider, privacy and security of information and above all, their effects on satisfaction, future use intentions and quality of life. The aim of this paper is to explore, analyze and critically assess the use of existing service quality theories in the light of evolving and ubiquitous healthcare services and their underlying technologies. The conceptual model of the study identifies that there are three primary quality dimensions (platform quality, interaction quality and outcome quality) and ten subdimensions (System reliability, system efficiency, system availability, system adaptability, system privacy, assurance, responsivness, empathy, functional benefits and emotinal benefits) which play a vital role in capturing users' overall perceptions of mobile health services. Finally, the study identifies future research directions and highlights the managerial implications in the context of developing countries.

Quality Dynamics in IT Services Management

The increasing importance of information technology (IT) services in the global economy prompts I... more The increasing importance of information technology (IT) services in the global economy prompts IS researchers to focus on service quality dynamics to capture the critical interaction between human behavior and IT. The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a user perceived IT service quality model for mHealth using a cross-disciplinary approach. The conceptual model is rooted in the traditional cognition (service quality) -affective (satisfaction)-conation (continuance intentions) chain but explicitly identifies three primary dimensions (i.e., system quality, interaction quality and outcome quality) and eight subdimensions (system reliability, system efficiency, system privacy, responsiveness, assurance, empathy, utilitarian benefits and hedonic benefits) of IT service quality in mHealth. The findings of the study show that IT service quality is the third-order, reflective, hierarchical construct with strong positive effects on satisfaction and continuance intentions in mHealth context.

Application of the Task-Technology Fit (TTF) Model to Structure and Evaluate the Adoption of E-books by Academics

Increasingly, e-books are becoming alternatives to print books in academic libraries, thus provid... more Increasingly, e-books are becoming alternatives to print books in academic libraries, thus providing opportunities to assess how well the use of e-books meets the requirements of academics. This study uses the task-technology fit (TTF) model to explore the interrelationships of e-books, the affordances offered by smart readers, the information needs of academics, and the "fit" of technology to tasks as well as performance. We propose that the adoption of e-books will be dependent on how academics perceive the fit of this new medium to the tasks they undertake as well as what added-value functionality is delivered by the information technology that delivers the content. The study used content analysis and an online survey, administered to the faculty in Medicine, Science and Engineering at the University of New South Wales, to identify the attributes of a TTF construct of e-books in academic settings. Using exploratory factor analysis, preliminary findings confirmed annotation, navigation, and output as the core dimensions of the TTF construct. The results of confirmatory factor analysis using partial least squares path modeling supported the overall TTF model in reflecting significant positive impact of task, technology, and individual characteristics on TTF for ebooks in academic settings; it also confirmed significant positive impact of TTF on individuals' performance and use, and impact of using e-books on individual performance. Our research makes two contributions: the development of an e-book TTF construct and the testing of that construct in a model validating the efficacy of the TTF framework in measuring perceived fit of e-books to academic tasks.

Structural equation modeling (SEM) is an important tool for Information Systems (IS) researchers ... more Structural equation modeling (SEM) is an important tool for Information Systems (IS) researchers for estimating a network of causal relationships linking two or more complex concepts. The PLS approach to SEM, also known as component based SEM, is becoming more prominent for estimating large complex models due to its soft modeling assumptions. This ‘soft modeling’ refers to the greater flexibility of PLS technique in developing and validating the complex models. However, to establish rigor in such complex modeling, this study highlights the critical roles of power analysis, predictive relevance and GoF index. The findings of the study show that power analysis is essential to establish conjectures based on IT artifacts, predictive relevance is vital to measure how well observed values are reproduced by the model and finally, GoF index is crucial for assessing the global validity of a complex model.

Continuance of mHealth Services at the Bottom of the Pyramid: The Roles of Service Quality and Trust

Continued usage of information systems (or, IS continuance) has proven to be a critical success p... more Continued usage of information systems (or, IS continuance) has proven to be a critical success parameter for ICT implementation at the top of the global economic pyramid. However, there are few studies which have explored continued IS usage at the bottom of the economic pyramid (BOP) though it represents the majority of the world’s population. To fill this knowledge gap, this study develops an mHealth continuance model at the BOP framing the impact of two post adoption expectation beliefs (i.e., perceived service quality and perceived trust). This study extends ECM (expectation confirmation model) perspective synthesizing the extant literature on continued IS usage, service quality and consumer trust. The proposed model was empirically tested within the context of mHealth (mobile health) services at the BOP, applying PLS (partial least squares) under a cross sectional study. The findings confirm that both perceived service quality and perceived trust have significant explanatory power under an integrated ECM providing superior prediction of continuance intentions. The study concludes by discussing conceptual contributions, practical implications, limitations and future research directions.
