Several published sets of usability heuristics were compared with a database of existing usabitit... more Several published sets of usability heuristics were compared with a database of existing usabitity problems in order to determine what heuristics best explain actual usability problems. Based on a factor analysis of the explanations as well as an analysis of the heuristics providing the broadcast explanatory coverage of the problems, a new set of nine heuristics were derived visibility of system status, match between system and real world, user control and freedom, consistency and standards, error prevention, recognition rather than recall, flexibility and efficiency of use, aesthetic and minimalist design, and helping users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors.

It is well understood and has been well documented that there is much to gain by using live proje... more It is well understood and has been well documented that there is much to gain by using live projects in the computer science classroom [1-13]. Live projects include those that serve a real client with a real problem as well as those those that integrate live datasets. However, the use of live projects has always come with a variety of challenges including supporting the project once it is complete, providing secure and safe access to large data sets, adjusting live client expectations, and limiting the scope of a project to the context of a single term and within the learning outcomes. The purpose of this special session is to provide attendees an introduction to and examples of the way that live projects have been integrated throughout the computing curriculum at Radford University.

Supporting Live Student Projects: Lessons Learned from the Small Project Support Center at Radford University

Live projects are enabling a new generation of software engineering education by engaging student... more Live projects are enabling a new generation of software engineering education by engaging students in software development projects that inject realism into the students' coursework. The educational benefits of incorporating live projects to solve real problems for real clients are well documented, but the challenges of supporting the students, clients, and deliverables are largely unaddressed. Radford University created the Small Project Support Center to meet these challenges and facilitate additional learning opportunities that students gain by working on live projects. This paper presents our experiences with a 360-degree view of the center, the operational challenges, and the many benefits that the center provides. The paper concludes with a summary of lessons learned and our plans to enhance and sustain the Small Project Support Center.

Combining cooperative learning and peer instruction in introductory computer science

CPSC 120, Principles of Computer Science I, is a first semester freshmen level course for compute... more CPSC 120, Principles of Computer Science I, is a first semester freshmen level course for computer science majors. Over a three semester comparison period, this course had an average WDF rate of 56% (i.e. percentage of students receiving a grade of “D” or “F”, or withdrawing from the course). In two sections of this course, two strategies, peer instruction and cooperative learning, were combined to lower the WDF rate for both sections to an average of 32.5%. The improvement was even more dramatic for the female students in the classes, who improved from a 53% WDF rate to a WDF rate of only 15%.

Introduction. In the United States, dietary supplement (DS) use is common, often takes place outs... more Introduction. In the United States, dietary supplement (DS) use is common, often takes place outside of the purview of health care providers, and may involve DS in combination with pharmaceuticals. This situation has led to concerns about interactions between DS and pharmaceuticals, as well as the risks from polypharmacy and polysupplement use.Methods. We used data from the Midlife in the US study (MIDUS 2 Survey) to examine DS and prescription pharmaceutical use in 3876 study participants in order to determine the demographics of high-users (5 or more) of DS and pharmaceuticals and the presence of DS-pharmaceutical co-use.Results. Over 69% of study participants regularly used DS, 49.6% regularly used both DS and pharmaceuticals, and 6.3% and 8.7% were high-users of pharmaceuticals and DS, respectively. High-users of DS, pharmaceuticals, and either were more likely than the whole cohort to be female and of lower income.Conclusions. These findings corroborate those of other national ...
