Methods: The periodontal condition of 109 patients was evaluated through clinical examination by two undergraduate students calibrated for the Periodontal Screening and Recording (PSR) index. The data collected were analyzed by SPSS 15.0 for Windows focusing on qualitative research. A descriptive analysis of data (percentile, frequency, mean and standard deviation) was performed, as well as statistical analysis by the chi-square at 5% significance level, and Pearson's t-test to verify the correlation of the variables age, gender, handicap level and PSR index. Results: Age was a significant factor for PSR1, PSR2, PSR4 and PSR5, where younger patients showed better periodontal health than older ones; however, gender and handicap level did not show significant differences when correlated with the PSR. The patients presented prevalence of periodontal health in the majority of sextants, followed by gingivitis. Few patients showed more severe degrees of periodontal disease. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the patients had acceptable oral hygiene, and low prevalence of gingivitis and periodontitis, suggesting that the program of prevention and dental care adopted at the facility was efficient and may represent a model for periodontal health care for patients in other institutions and towns.

Methods: The questionnaire was administered after the patient's care, as follows: first, the student explained the study purposes and methodology to the patient, the option of not participating and the full confidentiality of the information obtained. Patients were selected among those undergoing treatment at the Integrated Clinic I and II Disciplines (5th year of undergraduate dental course) between March and November 2010. Results: Satisfactory results were obtained, as most interviewed patients (49; 98%) considered the care given by FOUPF students as positive. Another important factor mentioned by patients was the use of individual protection equipment and biosafety measures adopted by the students; 98% (n = 49) of the patients affirmed that the students were properly wearing individual protection equipment. With regard to aspects that could be improved, 36.7% (n = 18) of interviewed patients mentioned the need to schedule appointments more than once a week, 12.2% (n = 6) felt the need to reduce waiting times for consultations, and 10.2% (n = 5) wanted to reduce appointment duration. As much as 98% of students (n = 49) declared being attentive to dentistry situations, 56% (n = 28) were satisfied with their technical aptitudes, and 96% (n = 48) mentioned enjoying helping patients. Conclusions: The care given to patients by FOUPF students is done well, not requiring significant changes.

Objective: the objective of this study is to identify the HPV in the SCC by means of polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Methods: twenty cases of SCC have been analyzed where the material used was extracted from specimens included in paraffin blocks of the Pathology Laboratory file of the São Vicente de Paulo Hospital of Passo Fundo/RS in the period of 2003 to 2007. They were all male cases and the 6 th decade of life was the most prevalent. The lower lip was the region that comprises most of the defects and the histological grade "well-differentiated" from the World Health Organization was predominant. It has been detected the presence of HPV's DNA in four of the 20 cases of the SCC (20%). Conclusions: it can be assured that, by the fact of the HPV has been identified in a considerable percentage of cases of SCC, it can have influence on the genesis of the referred malignant neoplasia. So, more studies are necessary to define what is the possible role of HPV in the oral carcinogenesis.

Palavras-chave Doença Periodontal, Controle Glicêmico, Diabete Melito Tipo 2 ABSTRACT Introduction: periodontal disease is considered the sixth classic complication of the diabetes melito. Recent studies tell that the diabetes melito and the periodontal disease represent a bidirectional association, in which the diabetes favors the development of the periodontal disease and this, when no treated, it hinders the metabolic control of the diabetes. The periodontites related to systemic diseases are caused by bacterial plate and also exacerbated by the oral condition. Objective: accomplish a literature revision in relation to the influence of the periodontal disease in the diabetic patient's systemic factor, and for its time, the influence of the diabetes in the development and progression of the periodontal disease. Conclusion: the diabetes melito is a factor of importance in the incidence and prevalence of periodontal disease, as well as the periodontal disease it can have influence on the metabolic control of the diabetes. The periodontal treatment seems to contribute for the improvement of the glycemic control of diabetic individuals and with periodontal disease.
