PROSPERITY GOSPEL AS A NEGATION OF THE THEOLOGY OF THE CROSS AND SELF-DEFENSE AS A RESPONSE TO SECURITY INSTABILITY

This article indicated that the killing of Christians in Nigeria is a two-facet phenomenon: the p... more This article indicated that the killing of Christians in Nigeria is a two-facet phenomenon: the persecution of the Church and a civil attack on Christian communities, which Christians must rise to face squarely. It pointed to the fact that, in a post-modern time as this, where the Church and Christian communities in Nigeria are faced with such instability of the security of their lives and properties, the Theology of the Cross and Luther's view on Self-defense will be a good response, since the 'Prosperity Gospel' which has so much influenced African Christianity has no solution for such situation. In as much as, there are good aspects of the 'Prosperity Gospel,' it has much untruth (unreality) which undermined the preorientation our Lord Jesus Christ gave the disciples before his bodily departure from earth; in which Christians are informed of the suffering involved in being his followers. However, he told them to rejoice despite all suffering, because he 'has overcome the world', and they too shall overcome the world. Thus, suffering-even as persecution and civil attacks on our communities-is a reality we must face as Christians. Our response to it is also two-facet: Self-defense and Evangelism.

I also point out the promoters of Arius’ theology after the first council of Nicaea and trace its adherents in the contemporary—twenty-first century. Arius believed that the Son is ontologically subordinate to the Father. But not just that, he pushed it farther and said, the Son was a created being—who is not of the same substance as the Father (homoousius)—which imply that, the Son is not God, and by this, he has been robbed of his Divinity. I disagree with Arius completely and contend against his views as mentioned above. I went farther to demonstrate that, the Son is homoousius with the Father, and is not a created being.

The purpose of this research is, by investigation into the views of Barth and Brunner on natural ... more The purpose of this research is, by investigation into the views of Barth and Brunner on natural theology, to restate and emphasis its relevance for us today-in the first quarter of the twenty-first century. This is achieved via a comparative analysis-by which this research adopts the purely objective method as well as the critical theological analysis and biblical assessment. It is by design naturalistic, which means it is non-manipulative. The research maintained neutrality and attentiveness to dynamics. The analysis is inductive; given each case its unique orientation, holistic perspective, and context sensitivity. Barth denied that God can be known outside Christ. This is to say, he is against general revelation but only accepts special revelation. Brunner insists that there is a knowledge of God obtainable in nature-though dimmed as it may be serves as a point of contact between God and man. He accepts general revelation but it is subservient to special revelation. The position reached in this research agrees more with Brunner, that: natural theology is relevant in that, we can make the most positive use of it for doing theology and witnessing Christ-in our time.

First, having introduced this brief work, I will present the propositions of the model-based intensely on Stephen B. Bevans' 'Models of Contextual Theology,' and thereby show how it plays in contextualization of theology. Having achieved the aforesaid, I will point to one strength and few weaknesses of this model, and thereby draw my conclusion.

Though few have denied any kind of influence upon him by either the Religious ideas of his time or the Intellectual setting within which he was brought up. However, in this short paper I deem it fit to investigate both the religious and intellectual setting of Luther, to point out how he was indeed influenced by them, and how because of this influence he was able to reconstruct the task of a “true theologian” and what a “true theology” should be (or is).
