These crises comprise natural and environmental disasters, epidemics and pandemics, drastic downturns in the world economy, and terrorism and political conflict. The latest peril is the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic; it has especially serious consequences for tourism development. Since the SARS epidemic of 2002-2004 the Southeast Asian economies have become increasingly integrated into those of East Asia; specifically, China’s contribution to tourism in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has grown exponentially. In this paper some of the most significant literature on crises and tourism in Southeast Asia is examined, with a focus on the East Asian market taking case material on the impacts of the pandemic on one particular part of Malaysia, the state of Sabah, which has enjoyed substantial success in attracting Chinese and Korean tourists to northern Borneo. Some of the policy and practical responses to the effects on the tourism industry are also considered.

This study examines the implications of the global pandemic on the tourism industry in Sabah, the study will consider the impact of the movement control order (MCO) and other mitigating measures adopted by tourism industry players. The survey and focus group findings indicate that the pandemic has had a significant impact on the tourism industry in the state, compelling operators and policymakers to re-evaluate current response strategies. The adoption of the MCO in response to the pandemic has resulted in business interruptions and income loss for tourism industry service-providers, with most of them losing more than 80% of their revenues. Diversification is one of the strategies used by operators in the industry to ensure long- and short-term viability. Meanwhile, a government vaccination program is a long-term strategy aimed...

Such information is critical if the lower Kinabatangan region is to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through a sustainable tourism industry based around viewing the pygmy elephants. Guests and guides from the Sukau Rainforest Lodge were encouraged to become close-range remote sensors by sharing geotagged photographs of pygmy elephant sightings on Flickr. A ten week onground trail generated 247 photographs shared by 17 individual contributors with approximately two-thirds (65%) of photographs being georeferenced for the time and location of the elephant sighting. Plotting those sighting to explore the vegetation matrix (i.e. remnant forest or oil palm plantation) showed almost three-quarter (73%) of the sightings occurred within 1 km of an oil palm plantation. Of greater concern is that one in two sightings (50%) along the river occurred within the 500 m of an oil palm planation, which is inside the riparian buffer that the Sabah Government recommended for conservation of the elephants in their Lower Kinabatangan range. This study therefore demonstrates proof of concept for this research method and its further application at the nexus of wildlife conservation and sustainable ecotourism research.

Environmentally literate individuals possess the knowledge and skills required to analyze environmental issues, which would enable the individual to behave pro-environmentally. The purpose of this study is to design a conceptual framework that links environmental literacy and factors affecting pro-environmental behaviour. Firstly, the development in formal and non-formal Environmental Education, within Malaysia and internationally are reviewed. This is followed by a review on Environmental Literacy over the past three decades, after which the concept of pro-environmental behaviour and relevant theories of behaviour are compared. The development of Environmental Education in Sabah and Malaysia, as well as the challenges faced between environmental sustainability and development in the tourism...

The Lower Kinabatangan River is a premier wildlife tourism destination that is affected by surrounding land uses and needs careful management to ensure it continues to provide positive wildlife tourism experiences. As little is known about the motivations and satisfaction of tourists with this experience, a visitor survey was conducted along the Lower Kinabatangan River with 346 surveys completed. The attribute 'Interest in viewing wildlife' had the highest mean level of importance and satisfaction (mean = 4.54 and 4.1, respectively, on a 5-point scale). Respondents were very satisfied with their wildlife tour experience (85%) and would recommend the experience to their friends (87%). However, almost half of respondents (47%) felt more needed to be done to protect the Kinabatangan River and wildlife. Although respondents were satisfied overall with their experience, they also expressed concerns over the number of boats and the protection of the River. Comments focused on the presence of rubbish in the River, intrusion of oil palm and the loss of forest. Many issues are beyond the management realms of tour operators but will impact on the future of the industry.

This paper aims to explore the meaning of perceived value of Malaysian low cost airlines from the perspectives of. •~their existing domestic customers. The Malaysian low cost airlines have been competing aggressively for :.;passenger load. Frequent price promotional campaigns are launched by the Malaysian low cost airlines to induce forward booking of air tickets to lock-in customers for future sales. Literature indicated that as a market matures, perceived value supersedes price in inducing favourable repeat purchase intention. The qualitative research methodology was adopted for this study to explore the multiple meanings of perceived' value of Malaysian low cost airlines. A notable finding of this research is that the existing domestic customers of the Malaysian low cost airlines evaluated the perceived value from the uni-dimensional and multidimensional perspectives. Findings of this research revealed that perceived functional value in terms of lower price, perceived relative value and perceived "social connectedness" value are crucial in prompting favourable repeat purchase intention of low cost air travel. Another interesting finding of this research is lower airfare is viewed as a perceived benefit and not perceived monetary cost.

Kinabalu climbing activity has seen a significant influx of tourist to the Kinabalu Park. The main purpose of this study is to determine the tourist satisfaction level and to identify issues that might affect tourist satisfaction while participating in mountain climbing activity on Mt. Kinabalu, Sabah. Data collection was conducted using a structured questionnaire around the Kinabalu Park headquarter complex. There were 24 items listed out in the questionnaire on which tourists satisfaction level measurement were based on -resource (mountain trails, facilities, scenery), activity (climbing experience), guide and staff service performance as well as satisfaction towards crowding. This study found that respondents rated their satisfaction "towards their achievement" the highest. Items with the lowest ratings were satisfaction "towards the facilities at Laban Rata" and "facilities along the trail". This finding suggests that, although the tourists are generally satisfied with their experience in Mt. Kinabalu, there is room for improvement in the aspects of facilities. This study has also identified "water insufficiency" and "traffic congestion" as alarming issues which could also serve as indicators for satisfaction. This study serves as the pilot study to come out with the baseline indicators for tourist satisfaction issues.

The article suggests that consumer satisfaction can be measured by proposing a paradigm that adopts a behavioral and experiential perspective as an alternative to the confirmation/disconfirmation paradigm, rather than the expectancy disconfirmation paradigm that is predominantly employed in measures of consumer satisfaction. It argues that guest satisfaction in the ecolodge context is the consumption of experiences involved in both behavioral and comparison components. Building on Herzberg, underlying satisfaction and dissatisfaction dimensions are linked to job satisfaction in a way that is a function of two types of condition, known as hygiene factors (dissatisfiers), leading to the condition of dissatisfaction (prevention), and motivators (satisfiers), leading to a condition of satisfact...
