Sustained GDP growth, a high rate of capital return and brisk economic development made China one of the best destinations for foreign capital; however, the benefits of this spectacular growth have not been evenly distributed throughout the various Chinese regions. There are many low-income and poor economic performing provinces in China although poverty is mainly concentrated in the inland regions. Since the beginning of the 2000s, a series of policies have been designed and implemented by the Chinese government to encourage foreign company investment in central and western provinces to help decrease the regional inequality with limited successes. This paper uses Panel Least Squares method to empirically analyze the impact of industrial sector FDI on Chinese regional inequality during ...

Researchers have sought to understand whether international trade and international factor flows ... more Researchers have sought to understand whether international trade and international factor flows are substitutes or complements. Several recent papers demonstrate that either case is possible. This paper considers this relationship between trade and international factor flows in the context of a two period, specific factors model in which domestic labor is domestically and internationally immobile while outside labor (international labor) is internationally mobile, but becomes immobile once it locates domestically. This pattern of mobile and immobile labor fits broadly with the labor market reality of most major European economies. Preliminary analysis indicates that international labor flows exhibit both substitutability and complementarity with respect to trade flows. The real wage effects are similarly ambiguous. Therefore, we empirically implement the model to examine the relationship between migration flows and trade in a panel of EU member states and Accession countries. The equations specify inflows of international labor in relation to trade flows and industry characteristics. Source: SOPEMI (1999). Secondly we discuss whether alternative remittances sending channels increase access to financial services for remittance-sending and remittance-receiving households. Africa, and in particularly Kenya, are pioneers in alternative money transfer systems and of tailor-made regulatory initiatives to address digital financial services. Thus, our paper focuses on the technologies of the Kenyan mobile money system, M-Pesa, and the major cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, and based on that takes into account selected experiences of other Sub-Saharan African countries. We find that in comparison to traditional remittances sending channels, mobile money transfer channels are often superior in terms of service-related features as costs of transfers for sending and receiving households, speed of delivery, availabilit...

The bilateral data covers 1980-2010 and includes gravity model variables and is appropriate for empirical analysis in a wide variety of contexts.

This is followed by a discussion of how this might affect the four dimensions of food security, availability, access, stability and utility. While coordination between SAFTA members has provided some positive food security attainment, institutional uncertainty and conflicts have prevented the full potential benefits from being reached.

Prior work distinguishes immigrant human capital while ignoring the sectoral nature of immigrant employment. This paper investigates the impact of immigration on a nation's pattern of production and trade. We assume an economy producing three goods, one non-traded, with internationally immobile domestic labor and capital. Some immigrant labor is specific to the non-traded sector, reflecting two observations about immigrant employment: concentration in non-traded goods sectors and low inter-sectoral mobility. Our model indicates that immigration's effect on the output and trade pattern depends importantly on the sector and nature of immigrant employment. JEL classification: D5, F16, F22, J61, O15

Of these RTAs, Free Trade Agreements account for nearly 90% of the total. Leading members of a region to trade more intensely among themselves is an observed characteristic of a successful RTA. This paper examines the importance of regional hegemons in the creation of successful RTAs. An empirical approach using cluster analysis to determine the importance of hegemon-centered regional integration arrangements is applied. The presence of a regional hegemon is found to be significant.

Much of the earlier work centered on security issues but with the end of the Cold War attention turned toward preventive approaches. This paper argues that the incentive for loss prevention leads to some form of cooperative regional integration. Inclusion of uncertainty positively contributes to the overall customs union literature. The optimal level of integration, political or economic, is found and then simple comparative statics are used to discern the effects of some changes in the underlying parameters of the economy on that optimal level of integration. Multilateralism and regionalism are concluded to be complements.
