Following a change of management in 1820 only females and infants were admitted, this remained the case until the closure of the hospital in the 1950s. This chapter brings into focus the medical conditions exhibited by children affected by congenital syphilis and the medical treatment of infants and children suffering from sexually transmitted diseases and congenital syphilis at the Westmoreland Lock hospital. Mortality figures supplied to the Board of superintendence of Dublin hospitals and published in their annual reports are looked at, as they demonstrate that the years in which there was a higher than normal mortality rate correspond to the years when a greater number of infants were born and when a considerable number of infants with congenital syphilis died shortly after birth, at the hospital. The question of medical ethics...

The data indicate that a very large percentage of geronto- logical social workers in a variely of social service systems are members of interdisciplinary teams (42.5%-96.6%) and the majority are highly satisfied with team membership (61.1%). Analysis of variancc found significant differences between those

The subjects were twenty 3-year-old children and twenty 5-year-old children, equally balanced for gender. Durational measures of utterances were analyzed in syllables and phones per second in both spontaneous and imitated speech contexts. The articulation rate of the 5-year-old subjects was significantly faster than that of the 3-year-olds. Spontaneous speech was significantly faster and more variable than imitated speech. Some gender differences were found. Measures in syllables per second and phones per second, although not always yielding identical results, were found to be highly correlated.

Fundamental information on speaking rate is required by the clinician for the appropriate management of those disorders with disturbances of rate or those in which rate modification strategies are applied. One measure of speaking rate, articulation rate, excludes pause time and measures the speed with which articulators move. A developmental assessment of articulation rate is of particular interest because of its implications for changes in temporal motor aspects of speech production in development. Aims: The fundamental aim was to provide longitudinal and normative data on articulation rate in a group of preschool children. The following questions were asked. What are the articulation rates and variability in rate at ages 4, 5 and 6, and is there a developmental trend? Are speaking context, utterance length and gender significant variables? Methods & Procedures: Speech samples from four speaking contexts, spontaneous, imitated, automatic (represented by nursery rhyme narration) and repetition, were elicited from 16 normally developing children (eight boys and eight girls) at ages 4, 5 and 6. Utterances were measured in syllables per second for runs of speech without pauses within each speaking context. Outcomes & Results: In contrast to expectation, articulation rate did not increase significantly with age. Neither did variability of rate decrease with age. Results suggest that the course of development is non-linear. Automatic speech and repetition were significantly faster than imitated speech. An interaction between imitated speech and variability was found at age 4. Considerable individual differences in rate were identified. There were no gender differences and no correlations between articulation rate and utterance length.

Several models were created by selecting the halos to match the observed LAE median dark matter mass and number density to study the effects of mass selection on descendant properties. We used assembly, formation and merger ages to study age dependence on the LAE descendants. For the models which best represent LAEs at z=3.1, the z=0 descendants have a median mass of 1012 MSun, with a wide scatter in masses. The z=0 central sub-halos distributions have median masses 1012 MSun. Typical descendants of z=3.1 LAEs are therefore L* type galaxies. The median descendant mass is robust to various methods of age determination but could vary by a factor of 4 due to current observational uncertainties in the clustering of LAEs used to determine their median z=3.1 mass.
