Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 6191 adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in a large New York City safety-net hospital system between March 1 and June 1, 2020. Associations between 30-day readmission and selected demographic characteristics, socioeconomic factors, prior health care utilization, and relevant features of the index hospitalization were analyzed using a multivariable generalized estimating equation model. Results: The readmission rate was 7.3%, with a median of 7 days between discharge and readmission. The following were risk factors for readmission: age 65 and older [adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.32; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.13–1.55], history of homelessness, (aOR: 2.03 95% CI: 1.49–2.77), baseline coronary artery disease (aOR: 1.68; 95% CI: 1.34–2.10), congestive heart failure (aOR: 1.34; 95% CI: 1.20–1.49), cancer (aOR: 1.68; 95% CI: 1.26–2.24), chronic kidney disease (aOR: 1.74; 95% CI: 1.46–2.07). Patients’ sex, race/ethnicity, insurance, and presence of obesity were not associated with increased odds of readmission. A longer length of stay (aOR: 0.98; 95% CI: 0.97–1.00) and use of noninvasive supplemental oxygen (aOR: 0.68; 95% CI: 0.56–0.83) was associated with lower odds of readmission. Upon readmission, 18.4% of patients required intensive care, and 13.7% expired. Conclusion: We have found some factors associated with increased odds of readmission among patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Awareness of these risk factors, including patients’ social determinants of health, may ultimately help to reduce readmission rates.

Considerable multiplication of the bacterial population was noticed in the compatible interaction (Acala 44 / Xcm race 18) ; it was much lower during the incompatible interaction when race 18 was infiltrated into cotyledons of Reba B50. An intermediate level of bacterial growth was obtained when Reba B50 was infiltrated with race known to overcome resistance of this line. High increase in POx activity occurred into the infected cotyledons during incompatible interaction, while the increase was much lower when the interactions were compatible. On leaves, a similar and significant difference in enzyme activity was also observed indicating that the "peroxidase response" was systemically induced in entire r...

KdpD and KdpE, proteins that control expression of the kdpABC operon, are members of the two-component sensor-effector class of regulators
Journal of Bacteriology, 1992

Expression requires KdpD, a 99-kDa membrane protein, and KdpE, a 25-kDa soluble cytoplasmic protein. The sequences of KdpD and KdpE show they are members of the sensor-effector class of regulatory proteins: the C-terminal half of KdpD is homologous to sensors such as EnvZ and PhoR, and KdpE is homologous to effectors such as OmpR and PhoB. The predicted structure of KdpD suggests that it is anchored to the membrane by four membrane-spanning segments near its middle, with both C- and N-terminal portions in the cytoplasm. Subcellular fractionation confirms the expected location of the protein in the inner membrane. The N-terminal region has no homology to known proteins and is the site of mutations that make Kdp expression partially constitutive; this portion may serve to sense turgor pressure. Since several other sensor-effectors have been shown to mediat...

Nocardiosis is an opportunistic infection that has been noted in patients with malignancies, systemic lupus erythematosus, HIV infection, hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients and longterm steroid users. Case Report: A 32 yearold female presented with history of myasthenia gravis on longterm glucocorticoid therapy. During her last admission, wound culture of her left shoulder abscess showed diptheroid organisms. Patient presented with severe headache, nausea, vomiting and altered mental status. She was initially diagnosed with metastatic cerebral abscess and treated with empiric antimicrobial therapy. Imaging study of the brain showed bilateral occipital ring enhancing lesions. Biopsy results came back as culture positive for nocardia. Patient was subsequently treated with intravenous antibiotics for a total of six months. Conclusion: Cases of nocardiosis may go undiagnosed, either because they respond to empiric antimicrobial treatment or because Nocardia spp. may be difficult to identify in cultures of clinical specimens. They may be mistaken for nonpathogenic microorganisms (diphtheroids) and discarded. High suspicion and early long term institution of therapy are key to a favorable outcome of this disease which has high mortality rates.

Mechanical Behavior of Woven Composite Reinforcements While Forming
Journal of Thermoplastic Composite Materials, 2002
Simulation of the forming processes of thin composite structures is necessary at the design level... more Simulation of the forming processes of thin composite structures is necessary at the design level in order to check the feasibility of the shape and to know the position of the reinforcements. A finite element analysis of fabric shaping process needs the knowledge of the mechanical behavior of the woven reinforcement. This behavior is non linear because of the shape variation of the weaving pattern when it is loaded. Experimental results are obtained from biaxial tests in the case of balanced and unbalanced fabric. A constitutive model consistent with the geometry of the woven pattern is proposed. It is based on experimental results achieved by biaxial tensile tests. 3D simulations of the unit woven cell submitted to biaxial tensions are also performed and compared to experiments.
