The global incidence of LBW is around 17%, although estimates vary from 19% in the developing countries (countries where it is an important public health problem) to 5-7% in the developed countries. The incidence in Spain in the decade 1980-1989 was about 5.7%. LBW is generally associated with situations in which uterine malnutrition is produced due to alterations in placental circulation. There are many known risk factors, the most important of which are socioeconomic factors, medical risks before or during gestation and maternal lifestyles. However, although interventions exist to prevent many of these factors before and during pregnancy, the incidence of LBW has not decreased.

Our objective is clarify the differential diagnosis among these entities. Descriptive and retrospective study of Dandy-Walker cases diagnosed at our Department during the last five years plus a review of the related Medical literature. Three cases of Dandy-Walker modalities are reported: one case of classic Dandy-Walker malformation, one case of Dandy-Walker variant, and one case of false Dandy-Walker. In the first two cases the patients underwent legal abortion, whereas in the last one a healthy male newborn was delivered in the week 38 of gestation. Malformations in the posterior fossa, including Dandy-Walker syndrome, are still a challenge in prenatal diagnosis. Technical developments in imaging, such as in three-dimensional sonography and magnetic resonance, allow higher resolution and multiplanar imag...

It is estimated that over 5% of EC are diagnosed in nulliparous women aged 35-44 years. In addition, EC can affect obese women with diabetes, hypertension and other comorbidities increasing the surgical risk. Methods: This article reviews the English literature in PubMed regarding hormonal treatment of EC. Results: Use of hormonal therapies has resulted in complete remission in 60-70%; many of these women were able to achieve full-term pregnancies, and in case of contraindication to surgery, resection could be avoided. Several topics, however, such as patient selection, interobserver histologic evaluation, the type/duration of hormonal treatment, modality of evaluation before treatment and surveillance after treatment, which are still subject to controversy, are therefore discussed in this paper. Conclusion: U...

To evaluate the repeatability of nasal bone measurement during second trimester with bidimensional and three-dimensional sonography. Nasal bone was measured in 50 single pregnancies. First observer carried out two measures of nasal bone with bidimensional sonography, and 1 measure with three-dimensional sonography. Second observer carried out just one measure with bidimensional sonography (2D) and just another one with three-dimensional sonography (3D). We studied the intraobserver variability with 2D sonography, and the interobserver variability with 2D and 3D sonography. 2D-sonography: nasal bone measurement showed excellent intraobserver correlation with a correlation coefficient of 0,87 (CI 95%: 0,78-0,93) and a little means difference of 0,18 (SD: 0,74). Indeed, there was a good interobserver correlation with a correlation...

Immunological alterations are involved in the pathogenesis of endometriosis, and STAT4 polymorphisms may be linked to disease development. This study's aim is to evaluate the possible association between four STAT4 polymorphisms (rs7601754/G > A, rs11889341/C > T, rs7574865/T > G, and rs7582694/C > G) and the pathogenesis of endometriosis in Brazilian women. This case‐control study's sample comprised 238 women with endometriosis and 201 healthy, fertile women without endometriosis (which was surgically confirmed). Genotyping was performed using the TaqMan system with a real‐time polymerase chain reaction; the genotype, allele, and haplotype frequencies were then compared between groups. A single‐polymorphism analysis revealed that the TT genotype of the rs7574865/T > G polymorphism was significantly more frequent in women with minimal or mild endometriosis than in the controls (10% vs. 5%, p...
