By increasing the global warming and environmental challenges the industrial countries commit to ... more By increasing the global warming and environmental challenges the industrial countries commit to reduce the gas emissions and develop the renewable energy based on the Kyoto protocol and also renewable portfolio standard (RPS). Among them, wind resources are more important because of the progress in the technology of its facilities to convert wind to electricity. Wind turbines manufacturer companies improve the efficiency of their facilities during the last decade. On the other hand, the wind generator firms and investors intend to select a suitable wind turbine generators (WTGs) based on the wind distribution in a specific region. In this study, Output power (MW) of four different types of WTGs has been compared. The wind speed data has been collected for 10 years from 2000 to 2009 from Canada Swift Current region. Then, the model of wind speed has been predicted with ARMA time series. In the next stage, the output power of each WTG has been determined with probability method. Finally, the suitable WTG is recommended according to the output power produced.

ABSTRACT Generation expansion planning requires simulating the medium term power market. This can... more ABSTRACT Generation expansion planning requires simulating the medium term power market. This can be done based on electricity price signals in the power market. The market clearing price is one of the most important factors to determine the incremental rate of private investor's profit. When calculating this parameter, the planners encounter greater uncertainties in a restructured power market than in a centralized market. This can be critical when renewable energies participate in this type of electricity market. In this study, the scenario based method is used to model a wind power plant in the restructured power market. The hourly output of the wind turbine generators is simulated based on a hybrid Auto Regressive and Moving Average-Monte Carlo (ARMA-MC) method. Each scenario of the wind power plant as well as its occurrence probability is determined based on a data mining technique. Then, a new comprehensive model for the restructured power market is proposed to maximize the profit of investors as well as to determine the market clearing price by considering stochastic and rational uncertainties. The stochastic uncertainties include the demand and fuel price that are modelled by using the Monte-Carlo method. The Nash equilibrium in the rational uncertainty as a strategic behaviour of players in the power market is determined by using the Cournot game. The effect of the CO2 tax rate and the bilateral contract are investigated in this study. Finally, the model is implemented in a test power market. According to the findings, this model can be used as a robust and comprehensive model to determine the market clearing price which can be applied for capacity expansion planning.

ABSTRACT The continuous increase of power demand stresses the system, and adversely affects its s... more ABSTRACT The continuous increase of power demand stresses the system, and adversely affects its security. It may lead to components overload and their outage, voltage decline and its collapse, which may cause entire system blackout. As well, the normal flow of power in transmission lines is not the best possible. In this paper, the Phase Angle Regulator (PAR) and Sen Transformer (ST) are suggested to be used for better utilization of the transmission lines, and to enhance power system security. In this work, the PAR and ST are modelled, and connected in a five bus test system using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation results showed validity of both PAR and ST, and the superiority of ST, since it enhances both power flow and voltage security. Based on the results, the new emerging smart power and voltage control device ST is a very effective tool that can be combined into Smart Grids (SGs). It is found that, usage of ST not only manages line flow congestion and maintains bus voltage, but also increases overall efficiency.

Mineral oil has been widely used as dielectric insulating fluid in transformers due to its excell... more Mineral oil has been widely used as dielectric insulating fluid in transformers due to its excellent performance in-service. However, there are few issues with mineral oil such as it has poor biodegradability and could contaminate the environment if a spillage occurs. With the increasing tight regulation on safety and environment, alternative fluids for mineral oil are currently being investigated and among the suitable candidate is the vegetable oil. There are different types of vegetable oils and one of them is the palm based oil. At the moment, extensive research works are carried out to examine its feasibility to be applied in transformers. This paper will review the previous research works that were carried out to examine the suitability of palm based oil as dielectric insulating fluid in transformers. The physical and chemical properties of palm based oil are studied based on viscosity, acidity, oxidation stability and flash point. Next, the electrical characteristics of palm based oil are examined based on AC breakdown voltage, relative permittivity, dissipation factor and partial discharge.
