The paper sees the emergence of digital communication, which is a product of the ICT as a welcome development considering the many benefits derivable from the new technology. It however frowns at the negative effect which the new technology has had on the Nigerian environment and attributes it to the freedom of expression and the linguistic diversity which emerge from the informal use of language employed in digital communication. The paper concludes with a note of warning on the dangers of inter-textuality and recommends that digital communication as exemplified in text messages and other on-line communication be embraced with care because most often there is a transfer of features of these varieties on the formal usage of the English language which mars effective communication. Effective Communication in the Digital Nigerian Environment: Problems and Prospects Introduction Communication is derived from the Latin word "communus" which means common. According to Schramm qtd in Okunna (6), "when people communicate, they are trying to establish commonness with someone". This implies sharing information, ideas, experience or messages. "Communication is the process through which participants create and share information with one another as they move towards reaching mutual understanding" (Rogers and Steinfatt 113). Communication involves a code which serves as a classification, that is language used by individuals to categorize their experiences and communicate such ideas to a receiver. The receiver decodes the message into an idea. The

Not only from the tributary of literary criticism, scholars from other fields and persuasions, language, sociology, anthropology, philosophy and so on have also enjoyed the fertility of the texts of this writer who was adjudged the greatest prose writer of African extraction. Perhaps, however, no other aspect of Achebe's writing skill has received greater attention more than his narrative skill, his telling techniques, especially his masterful blend of Igbo and English rhetoric strategies. This paper further examines the language techniques of Achebe in one of his novels, Arrow of God. It examines Achebe's exploitation of reference in the creation of suspense in the novel. Suspense is a popular literary technique, usually realised as an interepisodic linking device. But this paper examines it from a different pattern of linking strategy and in this manner uses it to characterise Achebe's literary idiolect. The theoretical framework adopted in the study is Discourse Analysis, a linguistic theory that examines how the various parts of a text are cohesively united as a whole. In applying this theory in the study, it examines how Achebe's unique reference patterns help in reading the novel as a text.

Any action carried out intentionally or unintentionally but which affects an individual negatively in an injurious or destructive manner maybe perceived as violence. Violence may be political, social, emotional or religious depending on the situation surrounding a given society. Any form of violence is an abuse of human rights which restricts or denies an individual access to his or her rights in society. Such universal basic rights are rights to live, freedom of thought, speech or religion, freedom of movement, choice, acceptance and security. Unfortunately the girl-child has suffered most in our society, both within the family and other social institutions that are meant to train, educate and socialize her. The girl-child in many African societies, Nigeria not exempt, has been sexually abused, trafficked, denied education, humiliated, oppressed and suppressed. She has been subjected to various forms of gender-based violence such as domestic violence, cultural violence, rape, forced prostitution and forced early marriage. These impinge on the growth, rights and physical well being of the female gender especially the girl child, with huge and grave consequences. The thrust of this paper is to see the extent the girl-child has been exposed to violence, how far she suffers and is still suffering from one form of violence to another. The paper concludes that despite the violence prohibition Act of 2015 the girl-child is still very much subjected to violence and if definite steps are not put into action the girl-child will continue to be deprived of her rights.

When more than one language are in use, speakers select the language or a mixture of languages that is most appropriate and which suits the speech situation. In such cases, speakers are bound to code mix or code switch in their language use. Traditionally, practices of code switching and code-mixing are viewed negatively. Some see them as "evidences of internal mental confusion'' and some as manifestations of language competence deficiencies. This paper therefore sets out to examine the formal structure and the socio-linguistic function of code utterances. It discusses these based on Grice Cooperative Principle which regards conversation as an enterprise in which participants can draw inferences through knowledge of appropriate codes to achieve effectiveness. Data for the analysis will be obtained from a corpus of speeches from undergraduates of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka through observation and questionnaire. The paper essentially argues that the switching from one code to another, its frequency and the communicative ease with which it is accomplished cannot be dismissed as evidences of linguistic incompetence in their first language (L 1) or in the target language. It concludes therefore that the codes have certain socio-linguistic functions and they serve as variations in language use.

It can be referred to as learner independence, self-access learning and distant learning. They all emphasize a shift of attention to learner-oriented approach to language learning. Autonomy is not a method of learning but an attribute of the learner’s approach to the learning process. The language learner takes responsibility for the totality of his learning situation. Autonomous learners understand the purpose of their learning programme, share in the setting of goals, take initiatives in planning and executing learning activities and regularly review their learning and evaluate its effectiveness (Little 1). This paper sets out to critically examine the issue of the autonomous learner in a second language situation, the opportunities presented to a bilingual, the problems one can encounter and prospects in English language learning.

Notable for his enchanting, moving and rare style of writing with which he has flavoured the scene of African literature, the writer continues with the combine efforts of other notable voices to proclaim a new dawn and display realistic signs that future of African literature is only getting brighter. In the novel, Becoming Abigail, the writer narrated a soul touching and emotional laden tale of a traumatized young girl who in trying to become herself as well as the Abigail the society wanted her to be ended up destroying her life and the lives of some other characters around her. Our aim in this paper is to examine the novel from the perspective of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. This theory deals with the workings of the human mind, the id, the ego and the super ego. Id is the pleasure seeker; ego provides the balance between the id and super ego while super ego is the extreme part of the human psyche. This i...
