James A. Green, Jr. has worked as a professional archaeologist for over 30 years and a geophysical data analyst for more than 20 years. He has worked on Phase I-III terrestrial investigations, as well as terrestrial and marine magnetometer surveys. His Phase II/III experience includes historic residential, industrial, and battlefield site investigations, and indigenous hunting camps, seasonal camps, quarries, villages, and mound site investigations ranging from Paleo to Colonial. His laboratory and office experience includes prehistoric lithic and ceramic analysis, lithic use-wear analysis, historic artifact analysis, historical research, database creation and maintenance, data manipulation, GIS, LiDAR processing, geophysical data analysis, spatial site analysis, and technical report writing and production.

In July of 2001 a Phase I investigation was performed at the Harvey Site (16EF80) on the south si... more In July of 2001 a Phase I investigation was performed at the Harvey Site (16EF80) on the south side of Jackson, East Feliciana Parish, La. The purpose of the investigation was threefold. The first priority was to assess a keystone brick-lined well and other historic artifacts that had been uncovered during land clearing operations on the property. The second task involved collecting more information about the age and cultural affiliation of the known prehistoric lithic scatter at the site.

The brass sideplate is from a musket, blunderbuss, or pistol most likely of French manufacture. Research suggests that this style of sideplate dates from circa 1730 to 1785. This paper discusses the history of the area as it pertains to firearms and settlement, the artifact, and the research to identify and date the artifact.

They were assisted by archaeologists James A. Green and Ann Ballard Green. This report represents that endeavor and presents the survey, environment, prehistory, history, previous investigations, methods, results, and recommendations.

My upcoming paper discusses the Native American use, Colonial accounts, and scientific evidence c... more My upcoming paper discusses the Native American use, Colonial accounts, and scientific evidence concerning yaupon tea, also called black drink. One of the primary focuses of this research was to look at the facts and myths related to the purported toxicity of the brew. In addition, I discuss recent archaeological work that has found evidence of black drink usage by native populations in North America hundreds of miles outside of previously known areas.

Please note that the while not explicitly stated, the purpose of the interview with Ms. Vaughan w... more Please note that the while not explicitly stated, the purpose of the interview with Ms. Vaughan was to gather information on the use of Freshwater Bayou and maritime transportation by residents of Pecan Island, Louisiana. This interview was meant to enhance a submerged cultural resources chapter of a larger report by illustrating the island's dependency on watercraft other than those used for work, such as their shrimp boats, oyster boats, and trawlers, which were addressed in the same chapter. Thus stated, it was never the intent of the interviewer to extract the minute details of day to day social, economic, leisure, and labor activities of residents on Pecan Island. In hindsight, a more in-depth interview or series of interviews should have been performed in order to extract as many early to mid twentieth century recollections of this unique enclave of Louisiana before all was lost.
