Celem artykułu jest syntetyczne oraz przekrojowe omówienie dyskusji o polskim kanonie literackim,... more Celem artykułu jest syntetyczne oraz przekrojowe omówienie dyskusji o polskim kanonie literackim, które toczyły się w drugiej połowie XX i na początku XXi wieku. W tekście podjęto próbę klasyfikacji postaw wobec kanonu oraz tworzących go dzieł po 1945 roku. Uwarunkowania polityczne, historyczne oraz społeczne, a także ocena poszczególnych utworów w sposób znaczący wpływały na kształtowanie się zbiorów tekstów uznanych za najważniejsze w dziejach literatury polskiej. Prezentacja i omówienie stanowisk znanych krytyków i historyków literatury (oraz innych znawców przedmiotu) pozwala ukazać, jak heterogeniczny, wielowarstwowy oraz bogaty w konteksty jest obraz kanonu, stanowiącego jeden z najważniejszych elementów kultury każdego narodu.

The purpose of this article is a synthetic and historical overview of the debates on the Polish l... more The purpose of this article is a synthetic and historical overview of the debates on the Polish literary canon, which took place in the second half of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The article attempts to classify post-1945 attitudes toward the canon and the works that constitute it. Political, historical and social circumstances greatly influenced the choice and assessment of works what were considered the most important in the history of Polish literature. In presenting and analyzing the views of renowned critics and literary historians (as well as other experts on the subject), the essay reveals that the outlook on the canon, which is one of the key elements of any nation's culture, is heterogeneous, multilayered and embedded in many different contexts.

Celem badania było uzyskanie odpowiedzi na następujące pytania: w jaki sposób została przedstawiona noblistka oraz jej twórczość? Czy zróżnicowanie światopoglądowe gazet miało wpływ na ocenę werdyktu Akademii? Czy zaangażowanie polityczne Elfriede Jelinek rzutowało na ocenę jej pisarstwa? Austriacka prozaiczka, która została uhonorowana najważniejszym literackim laurem, była w Polsce praktycznie zupełnie nieznana przed 2004 rokiem. Akademia Szwedzka doceniła jej dokonania „za muzyczny potok głosów i kontrgłosów w powieściach i dramatach, za nadzwyczajną lingwistyczną pasję odsłaniania absurdu społecznych klisz i ich ujarzmiającej mocy”.

The article rises the issue of the image of Poland and Poles in selected prose of 19th and 20th c... more The article rises the issue of the image of Poland and Poles in selected prose of 19th and 20th century. Literary texts of valued, recognised, awarded, often already called classics authors were presented: Thomas Mann, Günter Grass, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Jean Genet, Truman Capote, Dario Fo, Doris Lessing, Elfriede Jelinek. Also the prose of younger writers who are just blazing trails on the world map literatures – Michael Cunningham, Michael Houellebecq or Adam Georgiev. In their writing a Pole or a Polish national identity appear. Sometimes in passing, sometimes in the mainstream of the plot. The shared, most often appearing motive was found here - the Pole as the lover, shown in the atmosphere of the eroticism, fascinating and attracting. All at the same time motifs, in which Poland was shown quite unfavourably, perhaps stereotypically, and from the other side even mythical, appeared. All quoted stories and novels, in which traces, motives and cartographies are presenting an interesting image, worth the reader's attention and research reflection to the Polish national identity. This article is not claiming the right to the exhausting description of the phenomenon. A selection of the artworks has been chosen up to the author’s belief of their representativeness. In addition, what has already been mentioned, exclusively prose (the poetry would require the separate study).

"The paper raises the problem of the child as the Great Other, who appears in the novels of Doris... more "The paper raises the problem of the child as the Great Other, who appears in the novels of Doris Lessing The Fifth Child and Kenzaburo Öe A personal matter. In both works coming into the world of the Other – a handicapped boy – puts to the test the moral foundations of the conservative society. Nobel Prize winners are making human vivisection that shall specifically examine the persistence of attitudes and values such as parenthood, love, responsibility, confidence in front of drastic Otherness. The child manifests its differences, can not cope in relations with the environment, for which it is something dangerous, threatening ordered hierarchy of the family. Scandal also cause parents responsible for the birth of the ,,monster”. In Doris Lessing novel mother is excommunicated from the patriarchal society, in the prose of Öe father is alone in the community in which he lives with his son. For the analysis of the text the theory of Julia Kristeva on disgust will be used. Categories of abject, semiotic-ness, ,,the stranger in me” will help answer the question – why the hyperactive boy (The Fifth Child) and a boy with cerebral hernia (A personal matter) cause scandal and fear."

Celem artykułu jest analiza filmowych adaptacji Miasteczka Salem Stephena Kinga (1975) w reżyseri... more Celem artykułu jest analiza filmowych adaptacji Miasteczka Salem Stephena Kinga (1975) w reżyserii Tobe’a Hoopera (1979) oraz Mikaela Salomona (2004) w perspektywie semiotyki kultury popularnej ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem znaków filmowych dotyczących kreacji bohaterów oraz komponentów przestrzeni świata przedstawionego. Podejście semiotyczne, zastosowane w rozważaniach, opiera się na założeniu uznającym prymat intencji generowanych przez dzieło i dekodowanych przez odbiorcę, nie zaś odczytywanie intencji nadawcy. W centrum rozważań są znaki filmowe oraz próba odczytania znaczeń, które wytwarzają.

Religious Undead. New Conceptualization of Vampirism in the Media Space (Based on the Example of ... more Religious Undead. New Conceptualization of Vampirism in the Media Space (Based on the Example of Mike Flanagan's "Midnight Mass" Series) The aim of this article is to analyse topos of a vampire in the "Midnight Mass" series (2021). Due to the unique, religious aspect of the series, it seems necessary to answer the following questions: to what semantic extent does Netflix's production bring new content to the current evolution of the image of the "bloodsucker" in culture? Why the connection of vampirism and religiosity seems like a novelty, although such representations have already appeared in earlier works? Why the connection between vampirism and religion, when such representations have already appeared in earlier works, is a novelty? What references and parallels can be observed in the "Midnight Mass" series that relate to the famous novels by Bram Stoker, Stephen King, Anne Rice and films by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau or Werner Herzog? The methodology used in this article is based on categories developed on the basis of the semiotics of popular culture (evolution of the intermedia image of a vampire), theory of mass communication (convergent contexts) and comparative research (account of the use of motives between "Midnight Mass" and earlier works in which the bloodsucker topos is manifested). The cognitive value of the article is based on the demonstration of the broadening of the semantic field of vampirism vampirism in the religious context, which appeared in Mike Flanagan's series.

It focuses on the most important, representative texts of culture that have had the greatest influence on the evolution of the vampire figure from Romanticism to the modern times, such as Dracula, Salem's Lot, Interview with the Vampire, Twilight. The article intends to present various ways of reading and analysing vampirism depending on different methodologies. Undoubtedly, the approaches regarding interpretations of films and literary works featuring vampires have been conditioned by exegetical possibilities brought about by the methodological development in literary and cultural studies.

This article aims to propose a new thesis interpretation on The Romantic of Adam Mickiewicz, under which the beloved Karusia – Jasieniek is a phantom, Polish vampire, not the spirit. Phantom the most as Slavic because such a folklore and folk refers author of The Forefathers. In previous studies and interpretations ballad little space was devoted figure Jasienka. Beloved girl is the spirit, or ghost.
