Patients who had undergone molar tooth extraction and immediate implant placement at five different centers, and followed up between August 2015 and September 2020, were evaluated. Inclusion criteria were use of the osseodensification technique for implant site preparation. The primary outcome was septum width measurement pre-instrumentation and osteotomy diameter post expansion. Clinical outcomes, such as implant insertion torque (ISQ) and implant survival rate, were also collected. A total of 131 patients, who received 145 immediate implants, were included. The mean overall septum width at baseline was 3.3 mm and the mean osteotomy diameter post instrumentation was 4.65 mm. A total of ten implants failed: seven within the healing period and three after loading; ...

Usually, automatic cutting-off machines, of metallic pipes or bars, use constant cutting velocity... more Usually, automatic cutting-off machines, of metallic pipes or bars, use constant cutting velocity. This mode of operation, constant cutting velocity combined with different profiles of materials to be cut, causes variable cutting forces to be applied to the saw. As a result, the cutting off machine is generally set for the worst expected conditions, otherwise excessive wear of the saw and machine will occur. Further, traditional cutting-off machines require adjustments to be made in order to automatically detect the completion of a cut. The objective of this project is the study of the application of control algorithms to the process of cutting-off metallic pipes or bars, with variable profiles, implemented in an industrial cutting-off machine, commercially available. The testes algorithms concern real-time cutting control and automatic detection of cut completion. The algorithms are implemented in a low cost Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), allowing its adoption in industrial applications without significant increase on machine cost. All algorithms were developed having in mind safety issues relative to the operation of the cutting machine in order to prevent damage to the machine itself.. Also, all process related relevant parameters are monitored on a Personal Computer using OPC (Object Linking and Embedding-for Process Control).

The α-Syn pathology intertwines with the formation of Lewy Bodies (multiprotein intraneuronal aggregations), which, combined with inflammatory events, define various α-synucleinopathies, such as Parkinson’s Disease (PD). In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on α-Syn mechanistic pathways to inflammation, as well as the eventual role of microbial dysbiosis on α-Syn. Furthermore, we explore the possible influence of inflammatory mitigation on α-Syn. In conclusion, and given the rising burden of neurodegenerative disorders, it is pressing to clarify the pathophysiological processes underlying α-synucleinopathies, in order to consider the mitigation of existing low-grade chronic inflammatory states as a potential pathway toward the management and prevention of such conditions, with the aim of starting to search for concr...

This condition can have different origins and causes a negative burden in social interactions, communication and quality of life, and can in uncommon cases be indicative of underlying non-oral non-communicable diseases. Most cases of halitosis are due to inadequate oral hygiene, periodontitis and tongue coating, yet the remaining proportion of cases are due to ear–nose–throat-associated (10%) or gastrointestinal/endocrine (5%) disorders. For this reason, the diagnosis, treatment and clinical management of halitosis often require a multidisciplinary team approach. This comprehensive review revisits the etiology of halitosis as well as standard and novel treatment that may contribute to higher clinical success.

The aim of this study was to analyse the knowledge of AP in Dental Medicine students. Materials and methods: A prospective and analytical study was conducted using a questionnaire designed to describe the knowledge of AP and covering issues such as: AP guidelines, dental procedures and medical conditions needing AP, and recommended antibiotics. A 0-10 score was attributed to the questionnaire and the correct answers were based on AHA guidelines. The questionnaire was applied to students of the two last curricular years (4 th and 5 th year) of a Master in Dental Medicin and to newly graduated trainees at a University Dental Clinicboth in the Greater Lisbon area. The questionnaire was authorised by the students through a declaration of informed consent. This study was authorised by the Clinical Director of CDEM and approved by Egas Moniz Ethics Committee. Results: A total of 275 questionnaires were obtained with an answer rate of: 93.8%/4 th year (n ¼ 135), 84.5%/5 th year (n ¼ 120) year and 57.1%/trainees (n ¼ 20). The median score of the questionnaire was 6.0, 6.4 and 6.8 for 4 th and 5 th year students and trainees, respectively. The results were more satisfactory regarding: guideline existence knowledge, high-risk conditions recommended for AP and antibiotic selection in non beta lactam allergic patients. Unsatisfactory answers were related to: dental procedures in need of AP, heart conditions associated with IE, and antibiotic selection in beta lactam allergic patients. Noteworthy, antibiotic selection and dental procedure knowledge was significantly better in postgraduates. Discussion and conclusions: The knowledge of the undergraduates and newly graduates concerning AP for dental procedures was not totally satisfactory, however there was a positive evolution according to the academic degree. As pharmacology subjects are taught in the early years of the course, antibiotic therapeutics should be reinforced later during the study cycle, and students should be made aware of the importance of a rational and adequate use of antibiotics in dental practice. There is a need to improve the knowledge and communication over this topic not only among undergraduates but also regarding postgraduates, in order to encourage clearer and more homogeneous antibiotic prescription patterns.

There is however an unclear definition of the intermaxillary relation during athletes activity and its influence upon the performance. This theme is absent across the scientific research and should be the starting key point on this kind of study. Our goal is to create and assess an experimental setup to determine the intermaxillary relation in surfers during take off-getting up on the surfboard. Materials and methods: Ten male adults free surfers were invited for this study. We applied a standard questionnaire about intermaxillary relation during sports. Two possible setups were tested in terms of distance to capture the masticatory muscles in video of 5 take offs; we used a CannonV R ️ 77 D on a tripod first at a distance of 1 m from a white tape placed on the floor perpendicularly to the body of the surfer facing down, where both hands were placed while he was laying on the ground ready for take off. Then we gave them a signal to execute the takeoff and all was recorded on video for posterior slow motion analysis. The exact same procedure was done a second time for a distance of 2 metres. This case series study was approved by the Egas Moniz Ethical Committee and each patient signed previously an informed consent. All the assumptions of the Helsinki Declaration have been fulfilled. Results: Comparing the 2 setups, it was unclear, in terms of image analysis, the setup with the 1 m distance, becoming clear, in terms of muscle contraction, the 2 metres distance. Even so, the comparison between the standard questionnaire about intermaxillary relation and the video captured is highly variable and somewhat confusing, presenting some analysis limitations, giving us a clear notion that we need another mean of instrumental analysis about the intermaxillary position of the surfers. Discussion and conclusions: It is clear to us the high variability of the intermaxillary position of athletes during take off as the lack of self perception on their practice. It is mandatory to design a setup to have an instrumental analysis like electromyography to confirm masticatory muscle contraction and validate the possible influence or relation between intermaxillary relation and sportive performance.

This study aimed to update and render a robust critical assessment on all evidence linking PCOS and PD, and appraising a hypothetical bidirectional association. Five databases (PubMed, Scholar, EMBASE, Web of Science and CENTRAL) were searched up to May 2020. Case-control and cohort studies on the association of PCOS and PD were included. The risk of bias of observational studies was assessed through the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Random effects meta-analyses of standardized mean difference (SMD) and risk ratio (RR) were performed. We followed Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy (SORT) to appraise the strength and quality of the evidence. Twelve case-controls fulfilled the inclusion criteria (876 with PCOS and 48170 healthy controls), all scored as having a low risk of bias. Meta-analysis revealed that PCOS females have 28% more risk towards PD, and PD females have...

Global health, dental and periodontal expenditures were estimated. We tried to estimate the direct and the indirect costs of periodontitis. Indirect costs, those related to productivity losses, are a consequence of periodontal disease proper, plus edentulism and caries because of periodontal disease.ResultsIn 2018, the aggregate cost in the US was estimated at $3.49B and €2.52B in Europe. Indirect costs because of periodontal disease amounted to $150.57B (95% confidence interval [CI]: 103.32‐189.87) in the US countries and €156.12B (95% CI: 123.72‐221.86) in Europe. The majority of the projected indirect costs were because of edentulism related to periodontal disease and periodontal disease. Indirect costs were ...

Hence, forecasting potentially new protein interactions in this association using bioinformatic strategies presents potential interest. In this exploratory study, we conducted a protein-protein network interaction (PPI) search with documented encoded proteins for both stroke and periodontitis. Genes of interest were collected via GWAS database. The STRING database was used to predict the PPI networks, first in a sensitivity purpose (confidence cut-off of 0.7), and then with a highest confidence cut-off (0.9). Genes over-representation was inspected in the final network. As a result, we foresee a prospective protein network of interaction between stroke and periodontitis. Inflammation, pro-coagulant/pro-thrombotic state and ultimately atheroma plaque rupture is the main biological mechanism derived from the network. These pilot results may pave the way to future molecular and therap...

Clinical, histological and pain experience outcomes were further assessed.Material and MethodsFrom March 2018 to July 2020, patients requiring ridge preservation in preparation for delayed implant placement in post‐extraction sites were included. Participants were randomly allocated to either the test (MDM) or control group (xenograft granules) prior to ridge preservation. Visual analogue scale and analgesic consumption were measured every day for a week. Six months after preservation, trephine cores were harvested for histomorphometry prior to implant placement. Implants were then placed, and implant stability was measured immediately as well as two months after placement. Marginal bone loss and presence of mucositis/peri‐implantitis were registered up to 18 months after prosthetic loading.ResultsFifty‐two pati...

Here, we present a forecast for the economic burden of periodontal disease in 32 European countries and in the United States of America (USA).Material and methodsIn an aggregate population-based cost analysis, taken as reference the most recent available data, we estimated the cost of periodontal disease. Under this, global health, dental and periodontal expenditures were estimated. Additionally, indirect estimates accounted for Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALY) valued at per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP), to estimate productivity losses, including periodontal disease, edentulism due to periodontal disease and caries due to periodontal disease.ResultsIn 2018 the aggregate cost in Europe was estimated at €17.00B and €2.35B more in the USA (€19.35B). Indirect costs due to periodontal disease amounted to €132.52B in European countries and €103.30B in...
