This study aims to compare the perspectives of sexual satisfaction and adjustment to aging (AtA) in three age cohorts across the lifespan and to analyze whether sexual satisfaction influences the perceptions of AtA. Methods This cross-sectional study comprised 619 participants from three different age cohorts (18-44, 45-64, and 65 + years). Three measures were used to meet the defined objectives: (a) Adjustment to Aging Scale (ATAS), (b) New Sexual Satisfaction Scale (NSSS-S), and (c) sociodemographic, health, and lifestyle questionnaire. Data were subject to MANOVAs and hierarchical regression analyses. Results Social support emerged as the most relevant dimension in the multifactorial nature of AtA. Generational differences were found in sense of purpose and ambitions [F (2, 616) = 14.203, p < .001], zest and spirituality [F (2, 616) = 3.175, p = .042], body and health [F (2, 616) = 8.732, p < .001], and social support [F (2, 616) = 10.646, p < .001], with participants aged 65 and older showing significantly lower levels in all dimensions. Younger participants showed the highest score for body and health. Age-related decreases in sexual satisfaction were also found, as younger participants showed statistically higher levels of sexual satisfaction, followed by middle-aged and older participants. Sexual satisfaction predicts all the dimensions of AtA, exception made for aging in place and stability. Ego-centered sexual satisfaction positively predicted sense of purpose and ambitions (β = .225, p = .015) and social support (β = .297, p < .001), while partner/sexual activity-centered sexual satisfaction was a positive predictor of zest and spirituality (β = .243, p = .010) and body and health (β = .243, p = .008). Conclusions Sexual satisfaction decreases with age and is positively related to dimensions of AtA. Sexual satisfaction is a relevant variable for effective approaches to promoting healthy aging and overall well-being among (older) adults. Policy Implications Gerontological program policies and interventions with older people would strongly benefit of including sexual satisfaction as a relevant variable for aging well along the lifespan. Scarce studies were developed with this population and statistical data indicates the increasing number of elderly inmates in the Portuguese prison context. This paper intends to explore the perceptions of the inmates who are over 60 years old, as well as other professionals who interact daily with this population. The research is a case study with a qualitative approach. Data collection includes semi-structured interviews to prisoners, the prison director, guards, health professionals, reeducation professionals, etc. For the purpose of this paper, only results from interviews to prisoners will be analyzed (n=11). Ethical issues and procedures were carefully considered during all phases of the research plan. Environmental awareness and education have been recognized as tools to help mitigate environmenta... more Environmental awareness and education have been recognized as tools to help mitigate environmental issues. This study, performed in Portugal, aimed to describe perceived factors building environmental awareness on plastic pollution, study how perceptions are influenced by sociodemographic characteristics, and identify perceived priority targets for intervention. Results showed that participants recognize society's important role to raise awareness and to develop mitigation strategies. Higher perception was reported by women and participants with a higher level of school education. The more educated participants consider individuals possessing expert knowledge as a more reliable information source, whereas older and less schooled participants trust more in media messaging. Participants acknowledge that environmental education should be included in school plans, particularly in the first nine years of education (students with ages between 6 and 14, approximately). Data support the idea that target specific dissemination strategies should be planned according to variables like age, gender and education level.

Plastic materials are the most commonly found marine debris, with potential biological (not only for aquatic organisms but also for humans) as well as socio-economic impacts. Considering that it is an anthropogenic problem, society could play an important role to minimize it. Although a considerable amount of research has addressed the biological effects of plastics (micro(nano)plastics) on biota, few studies have addressed how scientific information is being transmitted to the public and the potential role of citizen environmental education. The current paper discusses known effects, researched topics and how scientific knowledge is currently being transmitted to the public.

A demência constitui, atualmente, uma das principais patologias associadas ao envelhecimento, com... more A demência constitui, atualmente, uma das principais patologias associadas ao envelhecimento, com graves e importantes limitações em termos da funcionalidade do idoso. Dada a sua crescente incidência [1], a intervenção no domínio da demência tem sido pautada pelo desenvolvimento de estratégias e programas de estimulação cognitiva, que procuram minimizar os seus efeitos nefastos e, simultaneamente, otimizar a funcionalidade global [2] [3] [4]. Estes programas constituem novos campos de conhecimento e intervenção, em casos mais recentes apoiados pelas novas tecnologias que, devido à sua sensibilidade, eficácia e acessibilidade se revelam eficazes ao nível da intervenção na deterioração cognitiva. Com efeito, vários têm sido os programas que, recorrendo a novas tecnologias, vêm demonstrando a sua utilidade e resultados positivos para idosos com demência. O objetivo do presente trabalho é apresentar uma abordagem de revisão empírica dos efeitos da estimulação cognitiva com recurso a novas tecnologias em idosos com demência. Conclui-se que a intervenção resulta bem sucedida na estabilização e melhoria das perdas cognitivas, apresentando-se as novas tecnologias como importantes alternativas às formas mais convencionais de lidar com esta enfermidade.

Given the crucial role that grandparents play in the upbringing and well-being of their grandchil... more Given the crucial role that grandparents play in the upbringing and well-being of their grandchildren, research regarding the perceived importance of grandparents for their emerging adult grandchildren is of particular relevance. This study examined the relations between perceived grandparents’ roles and family and life satisfaction in Portuguese emerging adults. Participants (N = 387), aged 18–25, completed a structured self-report questionnaire. Findings of structural equation modeling showed that emerging adults’ perceptions of grandparental roles of counselor, enjoying the relationship, and indulgence are positively related to their family and life satisfaction. The mediation analysis showed that family satisfaction mediated the relation between perceptions of grandparents acting as counselors and the life satisfaction of emerging adult grandchildren. Implications of family relationships and grandparenting in the context of emerging adulthood are discussed.

Based on a mixed-methods approach, the study evaluates the satisfaction of 36 higher education teachers with the pedagogical training program offered and discusses its impact on teachers’ perceptions of teaching practices, conceptions, and professional development. The results from the questionnaires applied to participants, including multiple choice questions and open-ended answers, indicate high satisfaction with the implemented training program. Based on this case study, the authors discuss the implications of findings for teacher professional development and identify key characteristics for the design of successful pedagogical training programs in higher education.

Associated with a high production and single use nature of several products, small plastic particles became ubiquitous. Due to processes like water currents and winds, plastics may occur far from their place of origin and affect biota at different environmental compartments. In the environment plastics can degrade into increasingly smaller particles, reaching a nanometer size which increases their potential to be incorporated by organisms. Currently it is recognized that the plastics in the environment are reaching humans via contaminated food, drinks, and air but their effects on humans are largely unknown. In this paper, the potential exposure routes and effects to humans are discussed and approaches to decrease impact of microplastics to humans presented.

Within the general framework of the sociogenesis of social representations, this article aims to explore the role of social positions in organizing individual's reported action towards the object of representation. A theoretical model which examines the relations between social representations of the development of intelligence, parental goals and the authoritative parenting style was tested in subsamples of educators, which included 227 mothers, 117 fathers and 122 motherteachers. Structural equation modeling procedures indicated, as hypothesized, that specific socio-cognitive dynamics are relevant in shaping the patterns of relations with the object of representation, suggesting that these dynamics are a result of the organization of multiple discourses where content, social positions and behavioral interaction are strongly intertwined. Theoretical contributions of findings are discussed.

From the paradigm of social representations theory, results from an interviewbased study are pres... more From the paradigm of social representations theory, results from an interviewbased study are presented. Forty-five Portuguese participants with different educational roles were interviewed individually about their definitions of intelligence and perceived family and school contributions for its development. Content analyses of the answers led to the differentiation of distinct categories, presenting intelligence as a multi-dimensional concept and identifying which specific educational practices are perceived as enhancing its development. Subsequent correspondence analyses shed light on the relationship between the various representational components and individuals' group membership, as defined by their educational roles. Extracted dimensions and typologies illustrate the socio-cognitive complexities of representations both by disentangling which domains build up an intelligible sense of intelligence for each group of participants and by demonstrating social representations' function in protecting a positive self-image. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings in educational research and intervention are discussed.

Neste sentido, revisitam-se as elaborações de Serge Moscovici, particularmente no que se refere às suas reflexões acerca das relações entre ciência e cultura, a partir das quais a adolescência é situada enquanto objecto de análise que se constrói na interface da ciência com o pensamento social. Em seguida, são apresentados resultados de vários estudos sobre as representações sociais da adolescência e do adolescente, partilhadas tanto pelos adultos como pelos próprios adolescentes. Pretende-se aqui uma sistematização de estudos que corroborem uma abordagem psicossocial da adolescência enquanto um fenómeno social e culturalmente construído, que assume força de realidade social.

Plastic materials are the most commonly found marine debris, with potential biological (not only for aquatic organisms but also for humans) as well as socioeconomic impacts. Considering that it is an anthropogenic problem, society could play an important role to minimize it. Although a considerable amount of research has addressed the biological effects of plastics (micro(nano)plastics) on biota, few studies have addressed how scientific information is being transmitted to the public and the potential role of citizen environmental education. The current paper discusses known effects, researched topics and how scientific knowledge is currently being transmitted to the public.

Objetivos: O apoio proveniente das redes sociais reflete, junto dos idoso, níveis de satisfação d... more Objetivos: O apoio proveniente das redes sociais reflete, junto dos idoso, níveis de satisfação diferenciados, os quais se associam a variáveis contextuais, facultando, de igual modo, leituras explicativas sobre a predição da solidão. Deste modo, pretende-se, neste estudo, distinguir as redes sociais dos idosos que constituem a amostra, discutir os níveis de satisfação que apresentam com as redes de apoio social e a percepção que evidenciam relativa a sentimentos de solidão, tendo por base a influência da variável residência. A par, será retida a percepção subjetiva da solidão, para analisar os modelos explicativos que lhe estão hierarquicamente subjacentes.Método: A amostra deste estudo envolveu 221 idosos, dos quais 99 (44, 8%) vivem na comunidade e 122 (55,2%) residem em instituição. Carugati, 2013) holds that the construction of social representations of intelligence is guided b... more Carugati, 2013) holds that the construction of social representations of intelligence is guided by the subjective inexplicability about the target-topic and by the social identities of subjects. Within the general framework of the sociogenesis of social representations, this article aims to explore the role of social positions in organizing individual's reported action towards the object of representation. A theoretical model which examines the relations between social representations of the development of intelligence, parental goals and the authoritative parenting style was tested in subsamples of educators, which included 227 mothers, 117 fathers and 122 motherteachers. Structural equation modeling procedures indicated, as hypothesized, that specific socio-cognitive dynamics are relevant in shaping the patterns of relations with the object of representation, suggesting that these dynamics are a result of the organization of multiple discourses where content, social positions and behavioral interaction are strongly intertwined. Theoretical contributions of findings are discussed.

From the paradigm of social representations theory, results from an interviewbased study are pres... more From the paradigm of social representations theory, results from an interviewbased study are presented. Forty-five Portuguese participants with different educational roles were interviewed individually about their definitions of intelligence and perceived family and school contributions for its development. Content analyses of the answers led to the differentiation of distinct categories, presenting intelligence as a multi-dimensional concept and identifying which specific educational practices are perceived as enhancing its development. Subsequent correspondence analyses shed light on the relationship between the various representational components and individuals' group membership, as defined by their educational roles. Extracted dimensions and typologies illustrate the socio-cognitive complexities of representations both by disentangling which domains build up an intelligible sense of intelligence for each group of participants and by demonstrating social representations' function in protecting a positive self-image. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings in educational research and intervention are discussed.

Não obstante a sua universalidade, existem todavia várias formas de envelhecer, associadas tanto à variabilidade das características dos indivíduos, como ao contexto sociocultural. Neste sentido, envelhecer relaciona-se não só com as alterações biológicas e psicológicas, mas também com os padrões sociais dominantes e a forma como as sociedades perspetivam o envelhecimento. O objetivo deste texto é apresentar um corpo empírico que evidencia uma noção essencialmente negativa da velhice traçada em termos sociais e culturais, contrapondo a esta visão as principais bases teóricas e empíricas no âmbito da promoção do desenvolvimento e envelhecimento bem-sucedido em pessoas idosas. Este capítulo aborda as contribuições da Teoria das Representações Sociais para a análise e compr... more Este capítulo aborda as contribuições da Teoria das Representações Sociais para a análise e compreensão do fenómeno da adolescência. Neste sentido, revisitam-se as elaborações de Serge Moscovici, particularmente no que se refere às suas reflexões acerca das relações entre ciência e cultura, a partir das quais a adolescência é situada enquanto objecto de análise que se constrói na interface da ciência com o pensamento social. Em seguida, são apresentados resultados de vários estudos sobre as representações sociais da adolescência e do adolescente, partilhadas tanto pelos adultos como pelos próprios adolescentes. Pretende-se aqui uma sistematização de estudos que corroborem uma abordagem psicossocial da adolescência enquanto um fenómeno social e culturalmente construído, que assume força de realidade social.
