These unsupervised methods are focused on the dissemination of the educational material and the evaluation of the users through tests and activities. The user behavior is not monitored and the performance of users cannot be reasoned in most cases. We strongly believe that the monitoring and analysis of the users' behavior in a distance course may help on improving the course plan and the quality of the reading material. In this direction we define the framework for an unsupervised educational process that combines reading material and examinations and monitors the user performance throughout the educational process. We detail on how this framework can be implemented using web technologies, thus creating a web-based educational application. We additionally define the methodology and tools that can be employed for monitoring and processing users' data.

The advent of the Web increased the pervasiveness of medical information and attracted the interest of both practitioners and patients. Web 2.0 in its turn brings people together in a more dynamic, interactive space. With new services, applications and devices, it promises to enrich our web experience, and to establish an environment where virtual medical communities may flourish away from private interests and financial expectations. This article performs a bird's eye view of Web 2.0 novelties, portrays the structure of a medical community and describes how medical information can be exploited in favor of the community. It discusses the merits and necessities emanating from various approaches and tools and gives emphasis on the intelligent information management inside the medical community.

Healthcare services are offered by medical practitioners and organizations and directed to individuals or to populations. The advent of the Web increased the pervasiveness of healthcare services and attracted the interest of both practitioners and patients. In its turn, Web 2.0 brought people together in a more dynamic and interactive space. With new services, applications and devices, it promises to enrich our web experience, and to establish an environment where virtual medical communities may flourish away from private interests and financial expectations. This article performs a bird's eye view of Web 2.0 novelties, portrays the structure of a community for healthcare and describes how medical information can be exploited in favor of the community. It discusses the merits and necessities of various approaches and tools and sheds light on pitfalls that should be avoided.

A centralized Telemedicine model proves insufficient to support the multitude of islands and other isolated areas of Greek mainland. This work records and analyzes the shortcomings and difficulties of the existing Greek Telemedicine system and suggests a more flexible, decentralized model, which upgrades the Regional Telemedicine Centers into mid-range providers of Telemedicine services. This reduces the burden of the central telemedicine unit, reduces reaction time in the offering of primary care without loosing in efficiency in more serious incidents. In this context, we list the necessary actions at technical, operational and organizational level for the smooth transition to a new system, as well as the advantages of this new structure. The binding of the new Regional Telemedicine Centers with the existing telemedicine system must be performed with the minimum cost. This presumes recording and reuse of the existing infrastructure, training of personnel and smooth transition to the new telemedicine structure. Based on the existing experiences, the specialized needs of the Greek National Healthcare System as well as the modern scientific developments we present an action plan that covers technical and organizational aspects for the development and successful incorporation and management of the Regional Telemedicine Centers in the Greek National Telemedicine System.

Traditional learning and training approaches are inadequate to fulfil the needs of doctors and medical practitioners, who need always to get informed on new technologies, devices and products and seek for solution in specific problems. Learning Communities is one approach in individuals to improve their skills and knowledge. Web ba... more Learning Communities is one approach in individuals to improve their skills and knowledge. Web based learning communities provide additional capabilities such as global distribution of participants and asynchronous participation. The learning process in such communities is flexible and distributed, but still uni-directional: knowledge, advices and support is transferred from professors to students. In virtual Communities of Practice, apprentices ask questions and experts respond. Learning and personal improvement is a collaborative process, since all participants contribute their experience. In healthcare communities, especially in patient-centered ones, effort is spend on informing, training and supporting patients to become self-managed. Families, doctors, nurses inside the community target their contribution towards the patient. However, the ability of patients to help other patients, through their experiences, is neglected. Similarly, in communities of people with disabilities, the community members contribute their knowledge on how to facilitate everyday tasks and support other members to improve their quality of life. This work introduces the notion of "self-supportive communities"-which combines the merits of "communities of practice" and "learning communities", engulfs care-providers, care-givers and care-consumers and promotes the role of all members in the community activities. The paper discusses the dimensions of the self-supportive community, illustrates the main issues for the transition to the new type of community and summarizes the development process of the community. It also gives an example of a self supportive community for the deaf and the hearing.

Several frameworks have been proposed in order to capture various dimensions of social media and measure their impact on people's social, professional and other activities. The effect of social media and Web 2.0 applications on the healthcare sector is also significant. This paper examines Greek healthcare professionals' attitudes towards Internet, social media and mobile technologies, explores their familiarity with social networks and associates their answers with their professional profile. The results of this exploratory study are discussed within the context of the growing international relevant literature.

One technique by which this can be achieved is through the development of communities of practice. This concept was conceived over 15 years ago and refers to the process of social learning that occurs when people who have a common interest in some subject or problem collaborate over an ...

In the blended e-learning paradigm, knowledge is delivered using a combination of online and traditional distant education practices. The purpose of this paper is to propose a set of criteria for the evaluation of the educational process in blended e-learning communities. The systematic surveying and evaluation of the various parameters that affect the educational outcome is the primary aim of the quality assurance process.
