There is a dire need for a robust understanding of the problem as well as factors affecting behaviour change. This study investigated factors influencing non-medical use of pharmaceutical drugs, consequences, and motivation to stop use among street youth in Kano, Nigeria. Twenty-nine street youth selected through the snowballing sampling technique were involved in focus group discussions. Participants aged between 18 and 29 years. Sensation seeking, mood-altering, confidence, and energy boost were upheld as the major reasons for drug use; while poor health outcomes, financial problems, and interpersonal dysfunction were the main consequences discussed by the focus group. Many of the participants indicated the intention to stop drug use but expressed concern about difficulties in accessing treatment. Preventive and psycho-social treatment measures for non-medical use ...

The objectives of the study were to determine the prevalence of conduct disorder among senior secondary school students in the study area and to determine gender difference in the rate and pattern of conduct disorder among senior secondary school students of the study area respectively. The study adopted cross-sectional survey design, 381 out of 57,238 students were selected as sample through multi-stage cluster sampling technique from the 42 senior secondary schools in Dala Education Zone, Kano state. The data collection instrument used in the study was Adolescent Conduct Disorder Scale (ACD-Scale) adapted from the American National Youth Survey Scale. The reliability of internal consistency of the scale was sought using Cronbach's alpha formula with alpha value (α) of0.89. The findings of the study revealed that the most frequent conduct disorder among senior secondary school students of Dala education zone, Kano State-Nigeria are; fighting, destruction of school properties, telling lies, graffiti drawing, tearing examination report sheets and examination malpractice. The study also revealed that there is a significant gender difference in the rate and pattern of conduct disorder among senior secondary school students of Dala education zone, Kano State-Nigeria where male students are significantly higher than the female students in rate of conduct disorder in the study area. Based on the findings above, the study recommends that government should come up with the two early intervention strategies that have been tested by other developed countries such as Chicago Area Project in America and found them useful in minimizing conduct disorder among adolescents. The first one comprises interventions on parents who are at risk for neglecting their children and thereby stopping adverse consequences of such action on students.

Three objectives, one research question and two research hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The study adopted survey research design using the population of 21,726 male and female public senior secondary school students of Kano Municipal LGA, Kano State. 378 samples were used for the study; the decision to use the above sample size was guided by research advisor table of sample size. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 6 senior secondary schools, three from male schools and three from female secondary school students. Two instruments were used for data collection in the study, namely: Social Media Usage Questionnaire, and Big Five Personality Inventory. All the instruments underwent face validity; the reliability of internal consistency of the instruments was sought using Crobach's Alpha formula. All the instruments have positive reliability, the overall reliability index of; Social Media Usage Questionnaire is α=0.79, Big Five Personality Inventory is α=0.96 respectively. Data collected for the study was statistically analysed using descriptive statistics and frequency counts and inferential statistics. The research questions were answered using descriptive statastics while the research hypotheses were tested using independent sample t-test and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient at 0.05 level of significance. The findings from the study indicates that; there is high prevalence of social media usage among senior secondary school students in

This study strives to determine the validity and reliability of Barrat impulsivity scale, Adolesc... more This study strives to determine the validity and reliability of Barrat impulsivity scale, Adolescent impulsivity scale and socioeconomic status scale. A total of 100 students were used in conducting the pilot study in order to establish the psychometric properties of the instruments. The decision to use 100 students for the pilot testing was guided by Morrison (1993) who discourages the use of too small or too large sample for pilot study. All the three (3) adapted instruments underwent factor analysis; the factor analysis identified items in the instruments with weak factor loadings and thus was dropped by the researcher. The reliability of internal consistency was sought using Cronbach’s Alpha formula and Spearman rank order correlation coefficient was used to determine construct validity of the instruments. The results from this study revealed that; the overall reliability index of Barrat Impulsivity Scale (BIS-11) is α=0 .830, the overall Adolescence Conduct Disorder scale have a reliability index of α=0.868 and the overall SES have a reliability value of α=0.833 respectively; validity value of r= .76 at 0.000 level of significance for Barrat Impulsivity Scale (BIS-11), r= .63 at 0.000 level of significance for Adolescent Conduct Disorder Scale (ACD-Scale) and r= .68 at 0.000 level of significance for Socio-economic Status Scale (SES-Scale). Hence, the study revealed that based on the obtained correlation values, there exist the presence of strong construct validity and reliability in all the three instruments. As such, the instruments are hereby recommended for research in Nigeria.
