Based on in-depth literature review, the focus-group approach to qualitative research was conducted with key stakeholders in university-industry partnership coming together to understand the research problem and system requirements. The requirements gathered at the project initiation stage guided the system design and implementation of a distributed collaborative research and innovation system that runs on three separately located servers: two for two different universities and one for all industry players. The system developed was modeled to describe how it works and to demonstrate how it would meet the identified functional requirements. Recommendations were given to guide further research and development that would improve the impact of this research study.

The Adaptive Software Development model was employed due to the innovative nature of the study. Requirements were gathered from key stakeholders to determine the system architecture and various models that supported the system development process. The testing procedure demonstrated that three (3) separately located servers representing University A, University B and Industry Players worked together as one unit such that all users could form Research Teams and collaboratively conduct research work on the platform to boost University-Industry partnership for innovation.

The application of machine learning algorithms to the detection of fraudulent credit card transac... more The application of machine learning algorithms to the detection of fraudulent credit card transactions is a challenging problem domain due to the high imbalance in the datasets and confidentiality of financial data. This implies that legitimate transactions make up a high majority of the datasets such that a weak model with 99% accuracy and faulty predictions may still be assessed as high-performing. To build optimal models, four techniques were used in this research to sample the datasets including the baseline train test split method, the class weighted hyperparameter approach, and the undersampling and oversampling techniques. Three machine learning algorithms were implemented for the development of the models including the Random Forest, XGBoost and TensorFlow Deep Neural Network (DNN). Our observation is that the DNN is more effcient than the other 2 algorithms in modelling the under-sampled dataset while overall, the three algorithms had a better performance in the oversamplin...

This research study aims at presenting the academia with a suitable online collaboration platform that promotes collaborative research among students with lecturers serving as online supervisors such that research activities can be shared among all team members anytime and anywhere. The Adaptive Software Development model was employed. A Joint Application Design Requirement Gathering (JAD-R) session was conducted to determine the required functionalities and tools for the user interface design of the web-based platform. The Effect of Query Convolution on Web search Results

Fifteen queries were selected from the transaction log of a major web search service in simple query form with no advanced operators (e.g. Boolean operators, phrase operators, etc) and submitted to five major search engines – Alta Vista, Google, mama, Ask, Jeff and Infoseek. The results from these queries became the baseline data. The original fifteen queries were then modified using the various search operators supported by each of the five search engines for a total of 210 queries and submitted to the applicable search service. The results obtained were then compared to the baseline results. At the end of this exercise, we observed that, increasing the complexity of the queries had a negligible effect on the result, with a greater than 69.6% overlap in the result, on average.

Web service composition requests are usually combined with end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, which are specified in terms of non-functional properties e.g. response time, throughput, and price. This chapter describes what web services are; not just to the web but to the end users. The state of the art approaches for composing web services are briefly described and a novel game theoretic approach using genetic programming for composing web services in order to optimize service performance, bearing in mind the Quality of Service (QoS) of these web services, is presented. The implication of this approach to cloud computing and economic development of developing economies is discussed.

This system can withstand various challenges that hinder the adoption of e-learning technologies in developing countries. This is important because it will reduce the time and cost involved in conducting large scale examinations by tertiary institutions without the need to upgrade existing infrastructures. These institutions will not necessarily require uninterrupted power or network connection to conduct web-based examinations as the system can easily resume if such an incident occurs. The architecture of the proposed web-based online examination system provides for integrated management of functions such as question pool creation and update, examination monitoring, failure toleration and recovery, automated grading, and randomization. The system a...

The Development of a Rule-Based System for the Diagnosis of Candidiasis

Globally, about 75% of women suffer from at least one episode of vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) annually. The nature of genital candidiasis infections, which includes vaginal and balanitis (inflammation of the glans penis) often hinders patients from seeking appropriate medical assistance in formal health facilities because these patients usually feel shy to engage experts. We developed a Web-based Expert System that provides a self-administered diagnosis of this condition. The system provides a diagnosis in conjunction with laboratory tests verification before treatment advice and remedial measures are recommended. Requirement gathering and specification were carried out through informal interviews and interactive sessions with health care providers, visitation to the laboratory and review of relevant literature on candidiasis infections. Simple production rules, as well as coded questions and answe...

There is over reliance on Secure Socket Layer/Transport Layer Security (SSL/TLS), which in recent times has proven to be fallible. Some recent attacks against SSL/TLS include: POODLE, BREACH, CRIME, BEAST, FREAK etc. A secure messaging protocol is implemented in this work. The protocol is further compiled into a reusable library which can be called by other REST services. The library can be reused by .NET applications and the implementation steps can also be followed by other REST services developers using other platforms.

E-commerce has also proven to be cheaper, faster, and more efficient over traditional methods. In spite of all these advantages, e-commerce is still not living up to its full potential, due, apparently, to lack of trust by end-users regarding these technology-enabled exchanges. Most research in e-commerce and trust have assumed advanced information technology (IT) infrastructural environments, so results from these studies have little impact on Developing IT environments, where internet infrastructure is still at the developmental stage, and the people are used to traditional commercial methods. This situation affects the level of trust and participation of end-users in e-commerce. This paper presents a unique approach for enhancing trust in e-commerce in less-advanced IT environments, with a perspective on feedback mechanisms in e-commerce we...

S... more This paper illustrates the use of semantic addresses to send emails in a corporate environment. Semantic Email Addressing (SEA) allows emails to be sent to a semantically specified recipient or group of recipients, which may be dynamically changing overtime. In order to describe the concept of SEA and its advantages, it is compared with the concept of mailing lists. Two solutions to send semantically addressed emails are presented, on one hand a client sided solution has been elaborated where the email is directly sent by the user, on the other hand, a server sided solution is also discussed, where the server sends the emails to the recipient. To make semantic addressing possible attributes which define users who want to use semantic addressing have to be collected. These attributes can be introduced by either the administrator or the user. The attributes must be up to date; that means regular updates must be carried out. A novel update technique which uses the concept of aging is d...

Diabetes is a chronic, often deadly, disease which occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the produced insulin. Globally, at least 422 million people are affected by diabetes in 2014, and it accounted for about 1.5 million deaths in 2012. It is most common to the Pacific and Middle East countries and mostly affects adults between the ages of 35 and 64. Lack of early diagnosis of diabetes can lead to many complications and even death, hence the need for low-cost mobile diagnostic tools which could lead to prevention and early management of diabetes. The Formhub platform was used to develop the mobile tool and it was downloaded and tested on Android smartphones with ODKCollect. The developed tool diagnoses diabetes using blood glucose test results, determines the type of diabetes and the likelihood of a person having diabetes in the fu...
