The measured cross section for 3 < p Ds ⊥ < 12 GeV and |η Ds | < 1.5 is σ ep→DsX = 3.79 ± 0.59 (stat.) + 0.26 − 0.46 (syst.) ± 0.94 (br.) nb, where the last error arises from the uncertainty in the D ± s decay branching ratio. The measurements are compared with inclusive D * ± photoproduction cross sections in the same kinematic region and with QCD calculations. The D ± s cross sections lie above a fixed-order next-to-leading order calculation and agree better with a tree-level O(αα 3 s ) calculation that was tuned to describe the ZEUS D * ± cross sections. The ratio of D ± s to D * ± cross sections is 0.41 ± 0.07 (stat.) +0.03 −0.05 (syst.) ± 0.10 (br.). From this ratio, the strangeness-suppression factor in charm photoproduction, within the LUND string fragmentation model, has been calculated to be γ s = 0.27 ± 0.05 ± 0.07 (br.). The cross-section ratio and γ s are in good agreement with those obtained in charm production in e + e − annihilation.

Muons were detected in the momentum range from 5 GeV/c to 1 TeV/c. The surface flux ratio is measured to be 1.2766 ± 0.0032 (stat.) ± 0.0032 (syst.), independent of the muon momentum, below 100 GeV/c. This is the most precise measurement to date. At higher momenta the data are consistent with an increase of the charge ratio, in agreement with cosmic ray shower models and compatible with previous measurements by deep-underground experiments.

MR images were studied prospectively in each of 31 patients with brain tumors (11 gliomas, 6 meningiomas, 6 neurinomas, and 8 others) before and after intravenous injection of gadopentetate dimeglumine. In every patient, both 0.5-T and 2.0-T MR studies were done within 1 week. Each patient received an initial standard dose (0.1 mmol/kg) of gadopentetate dimeglumine, followed by a subsequent 0.1-mmol/kg dose (total, double dose) in MR of each field strength. MR was done before and after each injection of the contrast agent. Degree of contrast enhancement in the lesions was assessed both visually and quantitatively. With standard-dose study, the tumor enhancement was visually stronger at 2.0 T than at 0.5 T in 9 gliomas. In extraaxial tumors there was visually no or minimal difference between 0.5 T and 2.0 T. Overall mean contrast-enhancement ratio and tumor and brain contrast-to-noise ratio were higher at 2.0 T than at 0.5 T by 53% and 108%, respectively. The double-dose study showed higher contrast-enhancement ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio than the standard-dose study at both field strengths, and the differences between 0.5 T and 2.0 T were almost similar to those of the standard-dose study. The degree of contrast enhancement with the standard dose at 2.0 T was comparable to that of the double dose at 0.5 T in most intraaxial tumors. The results suggest that effect of contrast enhancement increases with the field strength. Therefore, reevaluation of optimal doses of contrast media may be needed in a variety of brain lesions at each field strength.

In this study, Eriocalyxin B (EriB), a diterpenoid extracted from Isodon eriocalyx, was tested on human leukemia/lymphoma cells and murine leukemia models. Acute myeloid leukemia cell line Kasumi-1 was most sensitive to EriB. Significant apoptosis was observed, concomitant with Bcl-2/Bcl-X L downregulation, mitochondrial instability and caspase-3 activation. AML1-ETO oncoprotein was degraded in parallel to caspase-3 activation. EriB-mediated apoptosis was associated with NF-jB inactivation by preventing NF-jB nuclear translocation and inducing IjBa cleavage, and disturbance of MAPK pathway by downregulating ERK1/2 phosphorylation and activating AP-1. Without affecting normal hematopoietic progenitor cells proliferation, EriB was effective on primary t(8;21) leukemia blasts and caused AML1-ETO degradation. In murine t(8;21) leukemia models, EriB remarkably prolonged the survival time or decreased the xenograft tumor size. Together, EriB might be a potential treatment for t(8;21) leukemia by targeting AML1-ETO oncoprotein and activating apoptosis pathways.

The area under the ROC curve (AUC) for β₂-GPI-Lp(a) (0.787) was larger than for ox-Lp(a) (0.731). AUC of β₂-GPI-ox-LDL (0.858) was also larger than for ox-LDL (0.785). β₂-GPI-Lp(a) and β₂-GPI-ox-LDL were positively correlated with ox-Lp(a), ox-LDL and CRP, respectively. β₂-GPI-Lp(a) complex concentrations increased in active RA. The intracellular Ca 2+ concentration of mammalian endolymph in the inner ear is required for normal hearing and balance. Here, we document for the first time that IL-32 highly increased intracellular calcium level and IL-1b expression in an auditory cell line, HEI-OC1 cells. Treatment with 1, 2-bis (2-aminophenoxy) ethane-N, N, N', N'-tetraacetic acid acetoxymethyl ester, a chelator of intracellular calcium, inhibited IL-32-induced IL-1 b production and caspase-1 activation. Thus, IL-32 may contribute to modulation of the inflammatory reaction through the regulation of intracellular Ca 2+ in the inner ear.

Jets are reconstructed using the energy deposited in the CMS calorimeters and studied as a function of collision centrality. With increasing collision centrality, a striking imbalance in dijet transverse momentum is observed, consistent with jet quenching. The observed effect extends from the lower cut-off used in this study (jet p T = 120 GeV/c) up to the statistical limit of the available data sample (jet p T ≈ 210 GeV/c). Correlations of charged particle tracks with jets indicate that the momentum imbalance is accompanied by a softening of the fragmentation pattern of the second most energetic, away-side jet. The dijet momentum balance is recovered when integrating low transverse momentum particles distributed over a wide angular range relative to the direction of the away-side jet.
