This article wishes to discuss the reuse of monuments, construction materials and of other object... more This article wishes to discuss the reuse of monuments, construction materials and of other objects from the Roman period discovered at Tibiscum, starting with the Medieval Age and until the Modern Age. The locations with such discoveries are located near the Roman site, at Jupa, Căvăran-Ct. Daicoviciu, Caransebeș, Turnu Ruieni and possibly at Cărbunari-Țigănești and Obreja. In general, the materials that were reused included construction materials, stone, brick and especially fragmentary or complete monuments; small, precious objects such as ancient gems were also reused, being mounted in medieval rings. The vast majority of such spoils was reused in building or rebuilding medieval churches, the medieval keep from Turnu Ruieni or the medieval fortress at Caransebeș. The spoliation of Tibiscum begins for certain from the 14th century and continues in the next one, based on the policy of the Hungarian royalty of building new places of worship and repairing the royal fortresses given the danger represented by the Turkish expansion. In the Modern Age, the Roman monuments have been used to embellish the houses of the inhabitants from Caransebeș or the manor from Jupa, belonging to the Capra family of nobles. Fortunately, located nowadays in the archaeological reservation from Jupa, Tibiscum is most carefully unearthed and researched. Still, many of the objects unearthed at Tibiscum in the period before the reservation was created remain lost to this day, while many of the monuments plundered from the Roman centre and encased in the walls of modern buildings, no longer exist.

Une découverte rare de la Dacie romaine (Abstrait) Dans la collection du Musée du Banat Montan de Reșiţa, il y a aussi un artefact plus spécial, découvert dans l'un des camps romains sur le territoire de Banat, ayant le numéro d'inventaire 34614. Il s'agit d'une menotte romaine, trouvée dans le camp romain de Vărădia Chilii en 2006. Du point de vue typologique, le spécimen découvert à Vărădia-Chilii est certainement une menotte de l'époque romaine, qui appartient au type 4 chez W. H. Manning et au type dit Kunzing chez F. H. Thompson. Elle fait partie d'une série d'artefacts assez rares dans l'Empire, illustrés en Dacie par les découvertes faites dans les camps de Călugăreni, Buciumi, Ilișua, Mehadia et Bologa ainsi que dans les recherches effectuées dans le vicus militaire de Porolissum, et aussi dans le mithraeum à Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa. Grâce au contexte, il est clair que l'artefact a été utilisé par les militaires stationnés ici pour sécuriser des prisonniers de guerre ou même des éléments non soumis à l'intérieur de l'armée et peut être daté du début du deuxième siècle, entre la conquête de Dacia et les années 117-118 après JC. En outre, sur la base du diamètre intérieur assez grand, il semble que la menotte découverte à Vărădia fixât les pieds de l'homme menotté. Those men and their shackles. This article discusses the rings with open link and serpentiform body, discovered on the territor... more This article discusses the rings with open link and serpentiform body, discovered on the territory of the Roman province Dacia at Apulum, Ulpia Traiana Sarmisegetusa, Micăsasa, on the northern border at Ilișua and Poguior, but also in the neighbouring province of Moesia Inferior, at Noviodunum and Tomis, along with an artefact discovered outside the borders of the Empire, near the present-day city of Arad. The rings were made of gold, silver and bronze, being discovered in both military and civilian environments, some of which are part of complex funeral inventories. Few of them are part of the old collections and therefore do not keep information about the context of discovery. Also, the ring from Poguior, discovered at the beginning of the 20 th century, is now lost. To these, we can add three more artefacts, unpublished, which bring the total number to 16 rings held in the Romanian collections.

Horea Pop, Adrian Cătălin Căsălean, Sticla antică din judeţul Sălaj (secolele IV a.Chr.-II p.Chr.... more Horea Pop, Adrian Cătălin Căsălean, Sticla antică din judeţul Sălaj (secolele IV a.Chr.-II p.Chr.). Catalog/Ancient glass from Sălaj county (4 th century BC.-2 nd century AD.). Catalog, Editura Mega, Cluj-Napoca, 2022; 161 p., 49 ilustraţii şi 7 tabele. Lucrarea de față, apărută în 2022, prelucrează artefacte din colecția Muzeului Județean de Istorie și Artă din Zalău, rezultatul fiind un catalog bilingv (româno-englez) al artefactelor antice din sticlă. Corpul cărții a fost împărțit în cinci capitole, completate de anexele necesare unei lucrări de specialitate. Primul capitol, Introducere (p. 7-11), face cunoscută cititorului motivația care stă la baza demersului autorilor și parte din metodologia aplicată pentru redactarea capitolelor următoare, în funcție de categoriile de material. Autorii doresc ca acest catalog să fie un instrument în mâna specialistului, motiv pentru care cele 43 de piese dispun de o fișă minimă de identificare (Marca, Șimleu Silvaniei, Nușfălău, Cehei, Aghireș, Meseșenii de Sus, Moigrad, Solomon și Șimișna). Sunt discutate aici locațiile din care provin materialele și modul în care acestea au intrat în colecția muzeului. Capitolul al doilea, Siturile arheologice din judeţul Sălaj (p. 12-29), prezintă fiecare sit în parte, menționând locația sitului, stadiul cercetării acestuia, descoperiri importante și contextele de descoperire ale pieselor din catalog. Informația scrisă este completată cu fotografii cu detalii de cercetare pentru acestea. Capitolul al treilea, Catalog: Artefacte antice de sticlă descoperite în judeţul Sălaj (p. 30-123), aduce în discuție mai multe categorii de material, alături de informații generale cu privire la metodologia de studiu a acestuia (p. 30-36). Prima categorie o reprezintă mărgelele cu un total de 18 piese (p. 36-71), împărțite în șase tipuri. Primul tip este reprezentat de mărgelele monocrome simple ca formă (p. 36-41), cu trei piese descoperite la Moigrad și Șimleul Silvaniei. Al doilea tip este reprezentat de mărgelele monocrome complexe ca formă (p. 42-44), cu două piese descoperite la Marca și Moigrad. Al treilea tip este reprezentat de mărgelele policrome cu decor circular policrom (p. 46-60), cu șapte piese descoperite la Cehei, Solomon, Șimișna, Meseșenii de Sus, Șimleul Silvaniei și Moigrad. Al patrulea tip este reprezentat de mărgelele policrome cu decor liniar (p. 60-66) cu trei piese descoperite la Meseșenii de Sus și Moigrad. Al cincilea tip este reprezentat de mărgelele de chihlimbar (p. 67-69), cu două piese descoperite la Moigrad. Al șaselea tip este reprezentat de varia (p. 70-71), cu o piesă descoperită la Șimleul Silvaniei. A doua categorie de artefacte incluse în catalog sunt brățările din sticlă (p. 72-101), fiind analizate aici un număr de 12 piese care au fost incluse în șapte tipuri.
This latest book regarding the discoveries made in the necropolises of Viminacium and presented i... more This latest book regarding the discoveries made in the necropolises of Viminacium and presented in the following pages, deals with an extremely important subject both from the point of view of classical archeology and also the documentation of religious ritual and is addressed mainly to specialists. The chosen subject is premature death or mors immatura, documented by the research made in the necropolis of Viminacium on child burials, in which the authors analyze the funeral rite and ritual and the inventory discovered in 1828 graves, containing 1866 decedents. The book is prefaced by an introduction (pp. 7-12), regarding Viminacium in Roman times, briefly presenting the history of Roman settlement during the first five centuries and the history of the province of Moesia along with the history of archaeological research in this area. Included in the introduction, but treated separately, is also a brief presentation of the methodology used and the aims of the work (pp. 13-16). Such an approach was impossible without a serious statistic based on research done in the necropolises of the ancient city. The first part of the book present the results obtained by the funerary archeology through the study of the children's graves, with a division made on the age structure on the 1828 (pp. 17-28) out of a total of 10768 graves investigated in the necropolis of Vise Grobalja and Pecine, as well as according to the burial rituals and the typology of the graves (plain burials with a simple or more complex pit, burials in wooden coffins, burials in brick-build graves, and less frequent in amphora or covered in amphora shards or in lead or stone sarcophagus, in urns or ceramic pot, type Mala Kopasnica-Sase I and II, gravepit with etages) (pp. 29-40), both inhumation and the cremations, as well as the number of dead (pp. 41-46). It is thus observed that the highest number of graves belongs to children who died between 0 and 4 years-almost 1/3 of the total, with most of the deceased up to 1 year. It is also noted that most of the deceased were buried and not cremated. Also, very important are the analogies provided for statistics from other Roman sites, among others are presented Ravna-Slog (Timacum Minus),
