The text contains 243 verses. The language of the text and textual structure and nature of the described agriculture indicate that the writer must be a native of Bengal or Eastern India. Scholars opined that it was written in the period between 600-1100 A.D. a date which is certainly very old. In 1960, it was published by the Asiatic Society of Kolkata in Devanagari script with English translation. The manifestation of astrological science and mathematical calculation in regards to agriculture indicates that agriculture was the key concern of study in the contemporary period. At the beginning of the Krisi-parashara, the author states that it was written for benefiting the peasantry. In the verses, Sage Parashara given a vivacious description of every agricultural operation; the objective of agriculture, importance-qualification of farmers, agricultural tools, preservation of seeds, paddy threshing, astrological calculation for rainfall and women etc. But it seems that the information and knowledge of Krisi-Parasara couldn't use thoroughly to reconstruct the social history of ancient Bengal. Radharaman Gangopadhyay (1932), Lallanji Gopal (1965), D.K. Ganguli (2008) made extensive use of Krsi-Parasara in their works but there are few endeavours to write the social history of ancient Bengal. In this context, this article is aimed to manifest the state of agriculture in ancient Bengal and throw some light on the social history of Bengal.
